World first: Ming Yang's 16 MW TLP Floating Wind Turbine Enters Commercial Operation Ming Yang Smart Energy has commissioned the world's first 16 MW Tension Leg Platform floating wind turbine — CNOOC Anlan — supplying green power to the Lufeng offshore oilfield, 136 km off Guangdong in 136 m of water. The complete system stands over 307 m tall; the MySE 16-260 sits at 155 m hub height with a 260 m rotor sweeping 53,000 m² (7.5 football pitches). A few engineering highlights worth noting: 🔹 Integrated harbour assembly & single-tow deployment — The wind turbine was fully assembled onto the TLP floater at the quayside and towed offshore in one piece, cutting installation time and risk in harsh deep-sea conditions. 🔹 Typhoon resilience by design — Drawing on 3,000+ typhoon-resistant turbines in operation, the MySE 16-260 is engineered for 50-year extreme typhoon events. Dual backup power, active yaw strategies and refined redundancy for typhoon secondary landfall scenarios keep the machine online when it matters most. 🔹 Smart load control for floating dynamics — Ming Yang’s frequency-decoupling and active load-reduction control algorithms process real-time data from floater motion, nacelle vibration and wind vectors to avoid resonance. Result: >15 % reduction in tower extreme loads and >2 % gain in annual energy production, balancing safety, performance and lifetime in severe sea states. 🔹 Weight control down to 1 % — A three-tier weight management system (incoming parts, suppliers, assembly base) ensures the nacelle mass stays within a 1 % tolerance—critical for TLP buoyancy, quayside integration and offshore hook-up. 🔹 Advanced medium-speed drivetrain & carbon fibre blades — The semi-direct drive train uses a two-point support layout optimised for floating motion, while carbon-fibre pultruded spar caps cut blade weight by roughly 10 %, improving aerodynamic capture and reducing overall system loading. 🔹 Full-domain intelligent health monitoring — Fibre Bragg grating load sensing, millimetre-wave tip-clearance radar, vibration and oil analysis, bolt preload tracking, plus salt spray and lightning monitoring cover the rotor, drivetrain, electrical system, tower and fire/communication links. Early fault warning and remote smart O&M push availability up by 10 % and cut maintenance costs by up to 15 %. Annual output: 54 GWh, avoiding ~35,000 tonnes of CO₂ and saving 15,000 m³ of fuel oil. This follows Ming Yang’s earlier 7.25 MW semi-submersible CNOOC Guanlan unit, which has already delivered more than 22 GWh with a 99.94 % annual availability. Four of China's seven operating floating turbines run on Ming Yang technology across semi-submersible, twin-rotor and TLP platforms — proof our large floating turbines adapt to diverse concepts and harsh ocean conditions. Ming Yang will keep pushing the boundaries of large-capacity, floating and typhoon-resistant offshore wind technology to unlock the vast energy potential of the deep sea.

This month’s issue of German magazine ERNEUERBARE ENERGIEN takes an in-depth look at how Ming Yang Smart Energy is building its European wind business – with three purpose-built platforms: 1️⃣ A 6.25 MW onshore turbine for low-wind sites in Southern Europe – based on a DFIG design proven in hundreds of installations since 2020. 2️⃣ An 8.0 MW onshore platform developed specifically for Germany and Northern Europe – more to come at WindEnergyHamburg in September. 3️⃣ The MySE 18.5-260 for the next generation of European offshore tenders. All three platforms are undergoing certification with TÜV NORD GROUP. Development is led from our European headquarters in Hamburg, where European and Chinese engineering teams jointly designed the test programmes, including HALT testing simulating 35 years of turbine life, and main bearing trials at Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult) in the UK from 2027. Equally important: our European data residency concept ensures operational data stays in Europe, backed by IEC 62443 certification. Thank you to Tilman Weber and ERNEUERBARE ENERGIEN magazine.

Strong industry interest in Ming Yang Smart Energy at Manchester's Global Offshore Wind 2026. Last week our UK team has been at Global Offshore Wind in Manchester - the UK's premier offshore wind event, bringing together around 5,000 delegates under this year's theme, "Securing the future." It's a fitting backdrop. The UK is the world leader in offshore wind, with roughly 16GW operational today, about a fifth of global capacity, and a target of 43–50GW by 2030. And the message from the floor is just as clear: to deliver it, the supply chain needs to expand. That's where the conversations have been energising. Interest in our class-leading 18.5MW offshore turbine has been strong. At over 20% larger than current models in the market, it means fewer turbines, moorings, cables and tow-outs per project, translating into significant capex savings and helping unlock harder-to-reach segments like floating wind in Scotland and the Celtic Sea. The opportunity for the UK is clear, and we're ready to help seize it. Our technology, localisation and data strategy are tailored to the European frameworks. Thanks to our partners such as the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult team (pictured) and to our colleagues Anni Piirainen and Finlay McPhail for your support on the ground.
