A Chinese court imposed a death sentence on a man who killed 35 people by ramming a car into a crowd in southern China, an attack that spurred government efforts to tamp down social unrest.
   
据官方媒体新华社报道，上周五，珠海市中级人民法院依法对被告人樊维秋以危险方法危害公共安全案进行了公开审理，并于当日宣判，以该罪名判处樊维秋死刑。珠海是上个月袭击事件的发生地。
Fan Weiqiu was convicted of endangering public safety by dangerous means after a one-day trial on Friday in the city of Zhuhai, where the attack took place last month, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
  
新华社称，珠海市中级人民法院经审理查明，被告人樊维秋因婚姻破裂、生活失意，且不满离婚财产分割结果，遂决意通过驾车冲撞人群方式发泄私愤。2024年11月11日晚，樊维秋在珠海市香洲区体育中心故意驾车冲撞正在锻炼的人群，造成重大伤亡后果。
The Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court determined that Fan was frustrated with his failed marriage and how assets had been divided after a divorce, and wanted to vent his anger. He did so on the evening of Nov. 11, when he drove into people exercising at a sports stadium and caused mass casualties, Xinhua said.
  
新华社报道称，法院认为，被告人樊维秋的犯罪动机“极其卑劣”，犯罪手段“特别残忍”，犯罪后果特别严重，社会危害极大。
In reaching its verdict, the court ruled that Fan had caused extreme harm to society by using “particularly cruel” methods to pursue “extremely despicable” motives, Xinhua said. 
   
此前警方已确认肇事者为62岁的樊姓男子。据新华社报道，樊维秋当庭认罪。记者无法联系到樊维秋及其律师置评。
Fan, whom police previously identified as a 62-year-old man, pleaded guilty, according to Xinhua. He and his lawyer, who wasn’t identified, couldn’t be reached for comment.

Friday’s verdict marked an unusually rapid conclusion to judicial proceedings in a high-profile criminal case. It came days after a separate court convicted another car-ramming attacker, who injured dozens in an assault in the city of Changde just over a week after Fan’s attack.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping responded publicly to the Zhuhai attack the day after, urging officials to get “conflicts and disputes” under control, maintain social stability and mete out severe punishment on the perpetrator of what he called a vicious act.

Days after Fan’s attack, a former student at a vocational college in eastern China killed eight people in a knife attack at the school, according to local police, who said the alleged perpetrator had grown frustrated from failing an exam and over the pay he received during an internship.

Then on Nov. 19, a 39-year-old man drove a car into a crowd of students and parents in front of a primary school in Changde, a city in Hunan province, causing injuries to about 30 people.

Since then, party authorities have ordered nationwide efforts to “resolve conflicts at the grassroots and nip them in the bud,” while calling on local governments to better protect the rights of low-income workers, job-seeking graduates and vulnerable groups such as the elderly as a way to “strictly prevent extreme cases from happening.”

Friday’s verdict came after a separate court convicted the Changde attacker on Monday and handed him a suspended death sentence, or de facto life imprisonment.
   
据新华社报道，这名袭击者名叫黄文，他因投资失利和家庭矛盾而发泄不满。新华社称，常德市中级人民法院经审理认为，黄文的行为构成以危险方法危害公共安全罪。
That attacker, Huang Wen, was venting frustrations related to investment losses and conflicts with his family, according to Xinhua, which said the Changde Intermediate People’s Court found him guilty of endangering public safety by dangerous means.
   
新华社没有透露黄文在法庭上是如何辩护的，也不清楚他是否打算上诉。记者未能联系到他置评。
Xinhua didn’t say how Huang pleaded in court, and it wasn’t clear if he planned to appeal. He couldn’t be reached for comment.
