"The client doesn't ask for a model. He asks for PDFs. AutoCAD gives me PDFs. Why would I pay 5x for the same file?" This is the most reasonable objection to BIM. And the honest answer starts by agreeing: yes, the deliverable is identical. The first issue may even be ~10% slower in a modeling tool. But the file is the same, the factory is not: * In 2D, quantities are counted. In a model, they're computed, and they add up by construction * In 2D, plan and section agree only if nobody made a mistake. In a model, they're views of one object, they can't disagree * Revisions, where documentation time actually goes, become cheap: the change propagates instead of being hunted across sheets Same PDF. Every engineering office has that one detail. Copied from project to project since 2009. Nobody remembers what loads it was designed for. Nobody decided to keep it. It just never stopped being copied. And 2D makes it invisible: on paper, a copied detail looks exactly like an engineered one. The linework is clean, the stamp is in the corner. The error surfaces later, in construction, on everyone's money. Reuse is good engineering. Blind reuse is not.
