CHS serves Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park by providing financial assistance, supportive services, as well as counseling to individuals and families suffering without a home.

What Drives Us

Community & Home Supports, Inc. was founded in 2008 to help people and communities address poverty and homelessness. We envision a future where everyone has equitable access to safe and affordable housing as well as the support needed to empower independence and participation in vibrant communities. Guided by our core values of integrity, empathy, competence, community, advocacy, and equity we strive to fulfill our purpose by developing, leading, as well as participating in collaborative and innovative efforts that support those experiencing homelessness and advocate for fair, affordable, and equitable housing.

Homeless Services

CHS is a member of the Detroit Continuum of Care (CoC). The Detroit CoC is a network of nonprofits and government agencies in Detroit that work together to provide services to Detroit’s homeless and at risk households.

Our organization also provides these services for those who are unsheltered or living in a place not meant for human habitation such as a car, park, or abandoned building.

The existence of a CoC is a requirement for any community in the U.S. requesting federal funding for homeless services. We support the Detroit CoC through three key roles.

Advocacy

Our expertise lies in areas such as initial contact and assessment with homeless and at risk households; landlord/tenant law; and federal, state, and local homeless policies and regulations.

We use our expertise to advocate for individuals – ensuring that they know and understand their rights. We help our clients (individuals and families) receive the services they’re eligible for in an appropriate and empowering manner.

Coordinated Entry

Within the Detroit CoC, the coordinated entry system is called the Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM). CHS serves as the frontrunner for Resource Navigation services in the Detroit CoC in conjunction with the CAM Lead Agency, Southwest Solutions.

In this role, CHS staff are responsible to meet with any household that enters a Detroit CoC shelter.

When meeting with clients, we assess their service needs, assist them in acquiring vital documents (social security card, I.D., etc.), and refer them to a CoC agency that can provide them financial and supportive services. CHS has provided these services since the CAM inception in 2015.

Housing & Support

Through our Permanent Housing and Rapid ReHousing programs, CHS provides formerly homeless households ongoing financial support for monthly housing costs.

These households also receive assistance with supportive services such as mental health counseling, substance abuse counseling, healthy living counseling, tenancy management, budget and financial counseling, and other services based on their needs.

The ultimate goals for each household we service are empowerment and independence.

Your support helps us extend the reach of our services. We use donations to help the homeless households we service pay for vital documentation (I.D., social security card, birth certificate, etc.); rental application fees, move-in costs, furniture, bus tickets, clothing, school supplies, COVID-19 protection equipment, and many other household necessities to assist our clientele with the transition from homelessness to housing.
