comments aaarrrrrhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Previously I have done this post on comments and word verification and it remains one of my big hit posts...................but just lately more blogs I am commenting on have word verification set on there blogs..............
now I know I am not a robot leaving spam but I'm not a miracle worker or psychic either trying to work out what some of the letters are in those stupid things........now the one below I got this morning is not too bad but others seriously I have to go again and again to get my comment to go to you..........If I wasn't wanting to comment on your blog I would have just shut the page and not left the comment..........but since blogging for me is the interaction with you with me leaving comments and receiving comments it's driving me nuts...........
Also trying to comment on blogs sometimes on my phone is very difficult with word verification...........
Now I know you are all worried about spam.........and trust me I am too BUT.........most of the spam I get is left on older posts....if you set your comments as below you will survive I promise and you may actually get a few more comments left on your blog if you turn off comment verification.......
see below settings.......
Who can comment - user with google account
Comment moderation - sometimes
                                                                   - for posts older then (5) days
Email notification requests to (insert your email address)
Show word verification - NO
SAVE YOUR CHANGES
If someone leaves you a comment after your set number of days it will be emailed to you to either publish, delete or make as spam..........
Moderated comments will not show up on your blog until you publish them............
i'll add this post to the "How to......blog bits" page
Catch you later
Chookyblue
PS I've got some sewing to show you from a non blogger who joined the party on the weekend.....
PSS CHECK YOUR SETTINGS AS SOME OF YOU HATE THIS BUT HAVE WORD VERIFICATION ON YOUR BLOG.

pages in blogs........

See just above this post but below the header there are a pile of links to things well they are all separate pages of info........blogger has just changed how you do them.........(the only good thing they have done for awhile).......now they look just like the lists of post in your settings............and you can change how they sit/order in the layout of your template section...........

don't use pages what are they????
well treat them like a one off post of something you would like people to look at more often............
see the different things i have in mine..............you will get the idea..........

blog photo storage.......

Quite a few blogs have mentioned reaching photo storage limits...............
All the photos you publish on your blog are stored in Picasa Web Albums
This is what Picasa has to say about FREE storage limits...........
(random old photo from 2007)
Ways to clear the issue.........(my opinion here)
** pay money for more storage - NOT INTERESTED
** email pics to posts - i have done this for many years I started when my uploading was taking forever.........I always reduce photo size when emailing
** upgrade to google+ - NOT INTERESTED
** reduce your photo sizes before putting them onto your blog
** delete photos from your wed albums to free up space - NOT NOT NOT recommended as once you delete them they disappear from your blog altogether.
I have about 7400 pics in Picasa and used under 50% of my free storage.
When in Picasa click on the web albums in the top left corner...........
once in web albums scroll to the bottom on the page and you will see your usage.............
I hope this helps others...............
i'll add it to the "How to......blog bits" tab at the top of my blog........

Blogger &^$%$*&^#*^^$*&^#..........

During the school holidays blogger pushed us into the new interface.
aarrrgg &^$%$$*^%* blogger your driving people nuts.............
You can still change back to the old interface for the time being................i have gone back to the old one as it is easier to use but also to control the SAL group blog I can see how many members we have in the blog.
Previously I couldn't delete members of the group blog in the new interface but now I can do that.............BUT it still doesn't show how many members you have in the group like it does in the old interface and blogger has a limit of 100.
I don't want to be counting that all the time seeing how many members we have.
From the dash board click on the wheel below.......then choose old blogger interface
You can also find out about the new look here too..............
I have included the link here.........
Once back in the old interface on the dashboard does say the old interface will be removed in the coming months which will be a bummer but for now i'll stay with the old look............
Have a great weekend..............
Take care til next time

Comments & word verification......

UPDATE have done a new post on this..............you can find it here

Was talking to a friend today about the new comment word verification..............I know it is driving everyone nuts......No idea why they changed it as the old one was working fine.........I hate turning it off as I always get spam comments once i do it.............but for the last week or so i have turn it off and changed the "who can comment" settings and have only got one spam comment so I thought I would share if your interested..........and the spam comment was sitting in the comments TAB spam area so not published so I thought that was great............
I have changed my blog, Stitch-a-long and Snappy Friends and all are fine at this stage. If things change I will turn word verification back on. BUT it is driving me nuts on the few blogs I have commented on............
I am still using the old interface not changed to the new one as I can't control the users in a group blog like I can in the old one............
Sorry it's a bit different in the new interface (just looked)  so you might need to go to the comments and the email and mobile areas.........
If you want to go back to the old interface go to the dash board and click on the cog/wheel top right corner then a menu drops down then click on old blogger interface..............

See on the settings ---> comments tab below I have changed the who can comment to Users with a Google account. Most bloggers have one and if they don't (ie Typepad or Wordpress users) they can set up a profile anyway so they can comment plus include a link to their blog address
in the new interface it is under settings ---->>posts and comments........
Also I have for a long time had comment moderation turned on for comments on posts over XXX days old. I used to have this at 10 but have changed it to 5 days. Most spam was left on older posts anyway.
But usually people comment on your posts within 5 days and if they haven't they won't mind you publishing their comment once you have read it.
Make sure you have your email address in there so the comments can be emailed to you.
Also move the dot on the Show word verification to NO...........SAVE SETTINGS...............
See how you go.
I know there have been quite a few posts about this so do what works for you.............
I'll add this post to "how to...........blog bits" on the sidebar

Better go hang out the washing...........cloudy and breezy here but no rain and definitely no flooding like down south..........goodluck if you're in the very wet weather area...........
Summer is officially over but we have enjoyed the most mildest summer ever..............

spam emails..........

I've received a few spam emails over the last week.............I know one friend who clicked on the link in a spam email and it caused lots of trouble.
Gmail is where all my online emails go and I don't get much general spam but they have a great filter and it all goes to the spam folder and I delete them all without even opening them...............
BUT sometimes you get spam from friends..............they may have clicked on a bad email link/website.........somehow their account has been compromised..............
mostly they have no idea spam has been sent out to you...........If they are friends I always send back a new email to them to let them know I got an odd email............
So how do you know if it is "dodgy"
1. you keep getting emails from people you don't know (like Cheryl Ashmore - I am not sure who you are but I keep getting spam from you)
2. the email has an odd "subject" to what you may "normally" get from that person.........
3. The link isn't making sense to what they may have sent to you..........eg a link to a blog post ..........it is usually longer and the web address may make no sense at all...........
4. the email may have gone to LOTS of people in the "to" spot..........The only group emails I send out are to people who are part of a group I am emailing for a specific reason eg. SAL, SSCS,
5. Sometimes you get links to join things or view pictures of your friends, a mailing list you haven't joined up to...........usually SPAM.........
6. sometimes blog post get spam comments...........if you see a blog comment that has nothing to do with the post you just read with lots of links don't click on them.........

SO IF IN DOUBT DELETE
Your friend won't be upset if you delete what you think may be a "spam email"..............when you email them to let them know they sure won't mind emailing you the link again if it was a good email that you should have opened..............but they sure will be happy to know they got hacked..............

how to protect yourself
keep your antivirus/security up to date.............and remember to scan your computer regularly..........
if you get hacked by someone change your passwords..............

don't open emails that don't "look right"

I'll add the link to this post to the help section on my sidebar
.........take care til next time.....Chookyblue.........

Follow by email...........

this post is for blog readers and bloggers.............
first up for the lukers / blog readers / quiet dedicated followers
this would suit people who just open a blog to see what has been posted......
.......if you use google reader that is better but for those who don't I have a solution............
&&&
This week I discovered that blogger has a new feature.
if you want to follow all my posts you can sign up with your email address on the top left side of my sidebar
see the box "follow by email" click in it and type in your email address - click submit.
You will get an email to verify the subscription in your email account.
Once you have done that once a day you will get an email of any new posts I have put up...........it looks just like the middle section of the blog your reading right now (with the writing and pics)................
I added it to my other blogs too..........SAL and Snappy Friends
i have been testing it out this week and it works well.
A couple of people have already found the box too.............thankyou.......
Now for bloggers..................
Sign into your blog
From the dashboard
Choose the "design tab"
"Add a gadget"
A box pops up
Choose "follow by email"
Click on the "blue plus box" then "save"
Another box will pop up and details should automatically be put into the
boxes
"SAVE"
hope this helps..................i'll add it to the "how to..............blog bits" on the left sidebar..............

I like how this is private and not a "competition" about how many "followers" people have...............
As i have said before.......
I would prefer to only have 10 people who really read my blog then 1000 people "follow" and not really read my blog......only there for a giveaway or freebies...............

Catch you later..............

Site feeds......what are they..........

I was setting up a blog for a lady on the weekend and going thru the tabs was reminded of this so thought I would do another "How to.........blog bits" and add this to the sidebar............So what are they.................some of you will know others will have no idea what I am talking about.................
site feeds allow what goes out to things like RSS feeds, google reader, bloglines etc............
you set up what you want to follow and the feed programs search for all the updates.
eg you follow a blog - they are what updates you that they have a new post in google reader............
&&&&&
this also helps out when reading blogs in google reader and you have scrolled down threw lots of posts and you get to the bottom of a post and go woops who was that and have to scroll back to the top to find out who's post it was as lots of people don't sign a name at the end of their posts
&&&&&
you can control what feeds go out.
I don't like blogs that only allow a few lines of the post to be sent out................tend to stop following those blogs................sometimes I don't realise they have a short feed and really I don't have time to go read extra opening another website.............yes great if I want to comment but usually doesn't give me enough to know I want to leave a comment.............
&&&&&
so how do you do it...............I have a pic below to help......
from the dashboard
go to settings
site feed
allow blog feeds - full (must be full to allow the next box to show)
post feed footer -write your name here and/or your blog address
copy and paste your address if you tend to stuff it up............
SAVE SETTINGS
unfortunately the post feed footer is where some people add those annoying google ads too...........gosh I hate google ads.............if I wanted adds I would go find ad sites.............
anyway hope this helps or explains something............
Catch you later..............
Chookyblue
PS don't ask me about the post feed redirect URL as I don't use feedburner............

What blogs to show in your profile...........

Hi girls
Decided to put this quick help together.......
......I have been to a few blogs lately and getting confused...........some girls have a couple of blogs listed and they may be very similar names........
.....which one is the one they blog on................the other may be a blog they started and never used etc.............or the other way is for me I have a blog where I try some things out...
.....I don't need you to see it ...........very boring...........nothing on it really.........
if this is you follow below
when you are in the "dash board"
on the left click on "Edit Profile"
where the red arrow is it says "select blogs to display"
click on this and then another box opens up and will show the blog names listed and just untick the blog you don't want to show..............."save the settings" then you're done.
how easy was that.............
don't forget there are other help things listed on my sidebar...............

readers, subscribers, followers???

I After reading bloglines was closing I had to work out an alternative. Hence try to understand the difference between followers and subscribers (all linked to google reader) think I have it slightly..........
Some of you had no idea what I was even talking about so maybe this post will help explain.
It is long and photoless so Kris you might need more then a cuppa to get thru this one.......ie top shelf alcohol cupboard.

I know I saw on a blog a few months ago someone going on about how many followers they have......well in my opinion it is interesting but it's not any sort of competition to see who has the most.........but for some people it is..........
I have been blogging for a long time and I post what I want.........I would prefer to have less people to come to my blog and read it and look at the photos because they enjoy it instead of lots coming because I have free things to giveaway........they don't really care then - just in for something for themselves........
I suppose what we all want to know is that someone visits and reads what we write......and takes the time to leave a comment.

As i found out in my “research” there are readers, subscribers and followers......

Readers are how I started out. I just typed in addresses. If I liked them I had all the people I visited saved as favourites/bookmarked in my internet explorer/chrome internet browser.  I would open each page individually and see if you had put up a new post on their blog or not. I was on super slow internet (not much better now) and I used to get frustrated waiting for a site to open to find nothing new..........
Readers also come from blog lists on sidebars where people click from one blog to another.

A girlfriend was visiting and she got me onto bloglines aka subscribers. Saved me heaps of time.

Subscribers is what you would call bloglines and google reader
Bloglines(now closing if you use it export your subscriptions and then import them into google reader)
Google reader - I have my own account and I tell it what sites I want to keep track of and it searches the web for me. I go into my google reader account and it shows all the updated posts you have put on your blog. If I want to comment on one of the posts I click on the post title and it opens up your blog to that post ready for me to leave my comment.
I have mine sorted into folders for countries or different groups etc that makes more sense to me.
I subscribe to all mine privately therefore no one knows if I am following their blog or not and no one is offended if I change my mind and unsubscribe.
(Note the above is also referred to as RSS feeds. The internet in the background searches all your sites for the feeds that are automatically sent out from your blog unless you make it a private closed blog followers find those same feeds but uses them a little differently)
There doesn't seem to be any other feed readers known like bloglines and google reader so I will stick with google reader for now. I did check out "Feedly" which works with google chrome web browser and also links into google reader and it's not bad - nice clean look and as you read feeds in there it updates back to reader so you don't have to clear out both - but still thinking about it.

Followers has developed with the more recent social networking ideas (from my opinion). (tied up with google friends connect). Mostly it would be safe to say if you clicked on someone in a list of followers they would have similar interests to the blog you have been on. Hence it is a good way to find other blogs with the same/similar interest.
Followers shows up down the bottom of your dashboard (in blogger)......showing the posts of blogs you “follow”........you only get a snippet of the post.........at the bottom right of that box you can click on google reader and view all the blogs you “follow” in google reader instead.
As Dawnie found out today. It also should show the whole post for you.

When I started blogging there were various “rings” and people were members of those surf rings and they had to post so often and a certain sort of content etc..........it was a way to find blogs of similar interest. They have died over time. I never joined any or were asked to join but I posted about a variety of things not just quilting.
I have only “followed” my own blog to see what it looks like for others if they use followers.
When I went into google reader there is a folder of “Blogs i’m following” there so if you already have subscribed in google reader then you will be doubling up if you “follow” them too.
Most “followers” are public hence why we are able to see all those little icons on blogs if people choose to show them on their sidebar (or at the bottom of the blog in my case).
For some people it is only a matter of numbers...........how many people “like them” so to speak. Some people get a bit disappointed it if they only have a few.........how do they get more.....some have been upset when someone stopped “following” them.......
I am unsure about my followers button down the bottom of my blog whether I should keep it shown there or take it off???

I think some people act like it is a popularity contest. You truly have no idea how many visit your blog. All the people that go thru subscriptions don’t show up in stat counter........unless they actually come to your blog.........and if someone is following how often do they look at your blog anyway.
Some days I get no comments but know from my stats that a lot of people have passed by.

There is also many people that just jump onto one site then click on sites on the sidebar and hop from one blog to the next...........in my case when I do this I usually don’t remember where the hell I started or how I got to be where I am but finding lots of great and some not so great stuff to look at along the way.........

So how do you know how many visit???

I use a stat counter to get an idea where people are looking from (country) and I can see what sites they have come from.  Blogger does have new tabs with stats but I have a shinystat account.
There are also others around. If you see one you like on someones sidebar click on it and it will usually take you to the home site and you can make your own. I have tried a few over the years but find shinystat easy to understand.

Many have giveaways where you have to “follow” their blog to get an entry in the giveaway and this is a way to get more traffic to their blog.....downside- are the visitors only there for the giveaway and never back to read again...........(these giveaway's are a pet hate of mine as regular readers would know)

So how do you get people to find your blog and get it out there?

You have to put yourself out there - blogging does take time and effort

Visit peoples blogs AND LEAVE COMMENTS – you may need to leave a few to get noticed by a blogger sometimes. I could be too busy to go visit your blog when you leave the first one and only reply to your comment. But see another comment from you and go to your blog.

Visit other bloggers in a swap you have joined - most people who host a swap include a list of the other girls in the swap. Check them out while the swap is on.

Include a linked list of blogs you like on your blog - I have never asked anyone to include my blog in there sidebar.......and I have only been asked by one or 2 people to inlcude them on my sidebar..........not something I would recommend - asking people that is - I was a bit put off by it.
The people I have on my sidebar are there because I like their blogs. I don't update it as often as I should but I do it 4-5 times a year.

Put relevant and useful content on your blog  - your blog is personal and “about you” but things that help here might be to think of the reasons why you might visit another blog.............i’m not saying copy here but what makes you want to go back to a blog and visit again..........ie I am not really into crazy quilting so wouldn’t be searching out crazy quilting blogs.......
The reason I go to one blog could be completely different to why I go to another blog even though the blogs may be similar.

Photos - everyone loves to see photos of what you making/made, where in the world you are

Include links in your posts to other blogs – when you mention things you have seen on others blogs or you went and met up with a blog friend etc or joined a swap or won a giveaway etc

Post frequently and keep your blog moving – regular posting is a key.....be it several times a week or once a fortnight or monthly........don’t say you’ll post daily cause 99.9% of us can’t manage that.......

Rambling – don’t ramble on for too long in posts – keep it short and sweet (unlike this post)

I suppose what we all want to know is that someone visits and reads what we write......takes the time to leave a comment......we all want/enjoy the social interaction, friendship and motivation we get from blogland..........and we’re just as good as each other...........have fun and do what works for you.

I have added this post the sidebar list of "How to....blog bits"

.........take care til next time.....Chookyblue.........

woops...........

Don't do what I just did............I was checking out the new comments tab on my blog and accidently deleted some of the comments on the last post................sorry..............and I can't get them back.............I was looking thru for spam but I was on the wrong tab  Comments - published and selected some to remove and realise too late if you deleted them from this page you deleted them from your blog too.................but for those getting quite a few spam comments at the moment this may help..............might I add there have been 11523 comments left on my blog...........mind blowing....thanks everyone................but be careful if you delete the wrong thing..............more here on blogger buzz

blog etiquette............

after my last BIG post I was still thinking too much then BubzRugz wrote this post on blog etiquette and I was thinking a little more.............this subject is something that you usually just work out along the way and sometimes you wonder what to do or how to do it...............what's right and what's wrong...............
here are somethings I think about................not saying right or wrong but what works for me...........or things I find are the common occurrences in blogland.......
.......I will add a link to this post on my list of "how to....blog bits" on the sidebar so if you could leave your opinions etc in the comments that would be great..............
and if your coming to read this at a later date then read the comments too.........
What works..............
- linking to friends blogs (sidebar or in posts - it's how we find more yummy blogs)
- including photos (we all like to see pics in posts)
- mentioning designers and saying what the patterns are (not necessary but often saves answering several emails)
- linking to the designers if you know what the site is but not necessary
post regularly (be it several times a week or monthly)
- comment on posts (you like receiving them so make sure you leave some)
- reply to comments as you read them (creates interaction with other bloggers and you make new friends)
- include a mix of photos and writing
- if someone new comments on your blog go back and check theirs out
- follow the blogs you like in google reader or bloglines it saves time checking out blogs
- have fun because it is fun
- if you're in a swap it is polite to thank the sender via email and also a blog post for the gift sent promptly

What doesn't work..............
- replying to comments in your comments
(people very rarely go back to read other peoples comments - except maybe on a post like this)
- using other peoples photos without permission
- tagging people for awards etc.............some people like me HATE them and others like them maybe ask first
- giveaways where you have to do what feels like a 1000's task to get entries
- joining swaps and not communicating well with the organiser or not blogging during the swaps
- not thanking by email and on a blog post the person who sent you a swap parcel
- worrying about what you are posting isn't good as good as "xyz's"' blog
- don't apologise everypost - we are all busy people
- be set as "no reply" (people can't reply to the comment you left)
- taking things from other peoples blogs and posting it as your own
- google ad's.............I HATE THEM
- music.........I have slow internet and it usually opens and scares the living daylights out of me with short blasting bursts...........do you even listen to it on your blog...........just takes longer for people to download the blog page.........

NOW I could add I have added to this post at a later date but if you could put some thoughts into the comments that would be great for others to read too..........

Catch you later..............
Chookyblue

How to get your comments emailed to you............

okay a few people emailed me to ask how do they get there emails sent to their email account.............something I just assume everyone knew..........hence don't take everything for granted - you learn something new everyday...........I don't mind sharing these "how to....blog bits" cause every so often people email me and say they used it and thanks for the help...........pleased to be able to help.........

now back to the task at hand........
go into your blog
dashboard
settings
comments tab
scroll down the bottom
comment notification email (has a box beside it)
write your email address in this box
click on save settings

DONE

[if you don't want all your comments going to your business or private email make an account thru gmail, hotmail etc I know gmail has a little program you download and it will notify you each time you get a new email if you stay logged into your account..........it is pretty handy to keep blog emails and other personal emails seperate - makes life easier for me anyway]

emailing pics to your posts

updated Feb 2018
I see quite a few girls complaining about the up load time for photos in blogger.....or ipads' phones, programs not talking to blogger properly...........
I used to have this trouble (take 30 mins to upload one photo) but now I email all pics to my blog post and then go in edit and write the words.
this might help you out.........
To setup in your blog

login into you blog
from the dashboard go to "settings" then "email"
in the mail to box you will need to put "(a word)"

say your email is
smith@ hotmail.com

and your blog name is www.sewingroom.blogspot.com

then it will probably have something like already there

smith7.________________@blogger.com
you will need to write in your secret word (of choice) so it could be

smith7.sewing@blogger.com (write this down)

then choose save emails as drafts

Save Settings - this is then setup...........(add the email address to your email address book)

Now how to post

go into your pictures and find the photo/photos you want to post (what goes in an email is in the post)

Select your photos so they are highlighted then right click on your photo/s
choose
Send to mail recipient (using you regular email account eg outlook express, gmail etc) then choose make my pictures smaller and click OK
If you want to send lots of photos I send about 6 at the most per email and then open the draft, copy the pics and paste  into the one you want to publish if you want to have stacks of photos in one post.

your email program will then open

type in your email address

smith7.sewing@blogger.com

your email subject will become the post title
then click
send

Now once this is sent go into your blog and go to edit posts
the email will be saved as a draft - edit draft and I usually make sure there is a space between the photos and type in what you want then post as usual...........
I add my text to the draft post as it goes in the order I want then........
sometimes you may want to go to post options down the bottom and change the time of your post as it gives it the time when you sent the email edit: this has now changed with an update of blogger and it will automatically post the the time you click publish unless you set it to come on at a later date...........sometimes I send several emails of various pics to my blog and then go in and edit and post each when I am ready.............

Good luck hope this helps...........
.........take care til next time.....Chookyblue.........

Adding a picture to your side bar...........

before you do all the below............find the picture you want (usually on someone elses blog) a swap logo etc ..............right click on the picture and save it to your desktop (easy to find and you can delete it later once added to your blog)
sign in --> from the dashboard--> layout --> page elements --> on the left click on add a gadget (edited used to say add a page element)
Now there are heaps of different things to add here...........we want to add a picture ...........(like a logo for a swap etc)
edit this has now changes to a list with different logos but same idea........
you can add a "title" and "caption" but I don't..........
"link" - I put the website in here where you want to picture to link to but you don't need to put something in here either..............
edit: like your swap organisers blog address, another blog etc
find the image on your computer (remember you saved it to you desktop)
make sure "shrink to fit" is ticked and "save" your setting as you exit................
let me know how you go..............
Take care til next time..................Chookyblue

Details for your blog post.............

I got an email asking how to change the word comments on the bottom of your posts...............mine says (number) lovely people said....

How to change from "No reply"

The first change most new bloggers have to work out is how to make themselves "replyable"..........so that when you leave a comment on another blog that blogger can reply to your comments.............Lurline's Place this post is for you as you come thru and no reply (by the way like your blog too)
This has been updated for the new editor look...........
Go to your dashboard..............see in the top right corner it will have your blog name..............
Click on the little arrow beside your name

When you click on the little arrow the box below pops up.............
click on blogger profile...........

UPDATED AGAIN
Click on your name on your blog page at the end of  a post or click on your name on a comment on another blog........

this it should be your profile page........
......click on the orange button on the top right corner.........
make sure you have "show my email address" ticked...........
you can check your email address where blog comments go to etc.

once you make sure this is ticked scroll down the bottom and click SAVE.............

til next time take care.................Chookyblue
