Scrappy Summer

I have been making a lot of “planned” quilts this year and it feels like it is time to shake it up. I have been wanting to make a scrappy log cabin. I saw a version on the wall of a quilt shop and made a note of the book the quilter had used. I have quilt retreat coming up so a log cabin quilt feels like the right project to prep and take along.

This is the version I saw at the quilt shop. I am sorry that I do not know the name of the quilter.

Last week I dumped my bin of leftover fabrics (pieces not really big enough for the color bins) and started cutting strips. I cut mostly 1.5” or 2” strips to get started. This morning I made a sample block which turned out to be a very good idea.

I can see that I need to cut a wider variety of strips so I will get more of the offset look that drew me to this quilt. Fortunately, I still have plenty of fabric that can be cut up 😉

It is pretty warm here the next few days so I am taking my cutting mat and fabrics downstairs for another cutting session. No worries about having “enough” fabric. The goal here is to see if I will end up with an empty bin. Let the happy-scrappy summer begin!

Design Wall Wednesday

I found myself with waning inspiration to knit or sew this week and needed a task, something that would not require decision making. So I pulled out the bin with the squares I had cut for my Oh Granny blocks. I only needed to cut the rectangles and squares from the background fabrics from my dwindling stash of white fabrics. The perfect task. A few hours of ironing and cutting and I am ready to sew the rest of my blocks.

While I was pulling white fabrics, I found this chunk of polka dots and pinned it up on my design wall with a few of my finished blocks. This might be just what I need to pull together these blocks together. I won’t cut anything just yet but it is nice to have a glimmer of a plan, not to mention using up more of my stash.

Twelve blocks completed. Thirteen sets cut and ready to sew. Onward!
