  • 🌍 The environment is one of the least monitored drivers of antimicrobial resistance — and that needs to change. Pharmaceuticals flushed into waterways, microplastics accumulating in agricultural soils, pesticide residues exerting pressure on microbial communities — the environments we’ve altered are quietly reshaping the global resistome. Our Research Topic, Emerging Pollutants and the Environmental Resistome: Microbial Responses and Implications for Human Health, in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, is bringing together the research that makes that invisible process visible. What makes this space so compelling is the chain of consequence it reveals. Resistance doesn’t emerge in a vacuum — it evolves under pressure, spreads through horizontal gene transfer, and travels from contaminated soil and water into food chains, clinical settings, and human populations. Understanding that journey, and where it can be interrupted, is exactly the kind of science that moves policy as well as knowledge. We’re pleased to announce the launch of “Latent Tuberculosis Infection: New Insights into Persistence, Detection, and Prevention” in Frontiers in Tuberculosis. An estimated one-quarter of the world’s population carries Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a dormant state, yet the mechanisms enabling its persistence, immune evasion, and eventual reactivation remain incompletely understood — a gap that continues to limit progress on both diagnostics and prevention.   • Oral health and women’s systemic immunity don’t share many stages. They have separate clinical homes, separate research communities, and — until recently — separate funding streams. What’s shifted is the evidence base: mechanistic studies are now making a case that’s harder to dismiss, and reproductive and perinatal immunology is increasingly receptive to data that arrives from an unexpected direction. That convergence is exactly the kind of moment a collection like this is built for. For researchers sitting on longitudinal cohort data, interventional trial results, or multi-omics readouts that touch this intersection, the window to contribute is closing. The question of whether oral inflammation actively shapes systemic immune tone — rather than simply tracking alongside it — is one the field is ready to answer, and the studies that address it with temporal and mechanistic rigour are the ones that will move the needle. Pregnancy outcomes, infant immune development, hormonal modulation of the oral microbiome: all of it is within scope when it’s anchored to a defined immune pathway.   • From Immune Privilege to Immune Signatures: Innate–Adaptive Crosstalk in Ocular Infection and Inflammation Ocular infections remain one of the most challenging areas in immunology, precisely because the eye has evolved to protect vision at the cost of a dampened immune response. Understanding how innate and adaptive immunity coordinate — or fail to coordinate — when pathogens breach this privileged environment is critical for improving outcomes in patients facing viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic threats to sight. This Research Topic has already generated strong engagement within the field, reaching 2,238 views and downloads since launch — a clear signal that researchers see real value in bringing together mechanistic, translational, and clinical perspectives on this subject. Contributions exploring immune signatures, biomarkers, and host-directed therapeutic strategies are especially timely as the field moves toward more precise, infection-specific approaches to managing ocular inflammatory disease.   • 👁️ Why ocular infection immunology deserves more attention than it gets. Sight is one of our most vital senses, yet the immunology of ocular infection remains a relatively underexplored frontier. The eye’s immune privilege — long considered a protective feature — can become a double-edged sword during active infection, limiting inflammatory damage but also potentially shielding pathogens from clearance. As rates of infectious eye disease continue to affect millions globally, the need for clearer insight into how host immunity responds, adapts, and sometimes fails in the ocular environment has never been more pressing. Defining immune signatures in ocular fluids and tissues, understanding microbial persistence and immune evasion, and identifying the tipping point between protective immunity and immunopathology are questions with real clinical stakes — from improving diagnostics in uveitis and keratitis to informing treatment strategies that combine antimicrobial and immunomodulatory approaches. Research in this space has the potential to reshape how we manage infectious causes of visual morbidity across bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic disease.   • Millions of people fall ill with tuberculosis every year, and yet many never reach treatment in time - not because a cure doesn’t exist, but because the path to it is broken. TB remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious disease worldwide, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Where do patients get lost between their first symptom and starting treatment? What role do stigma, health system fragmentation, and gender norms play in these delays? And what interventions actually shorten the care cascade? Functional, metabolic, and epigenetic reprogramming of immune cells can shape pathogen clearance, disease persistence, immune-mediated damage, and therapeutic response. Advances in single-cell, spatial, and multi-omics technologies now allow researchers to map immune cell diversity and interactions at unprecedented resolution. Translating these insights into reliable biomarkers and host-directed therapies, however, remains a key challenge.   • While much recent attention has focused on long COVID, millions of patients globally continue to struggle with other persistent post-infectious sequelae, such as Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, chronic post-viral fatigue, and post-bacterial autoimmune conditions. These complex syndromes present persistent diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the lack of standardized clinical criteria and validated biomarkers. To address these critical gaps, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology has launched a new Research Topic dedicated to advancing clinical diagnostics and immunological profiling for post-acute infectious syndromes. This collection serves as a dedicated forum for researchers developing and validating novel molecular, serological, and immunological assays. By prioritizing studies that translate basic microbiology and immunology into actionable clinical tools, we aim to establish robust tracking methods, discover reliable inflammatory biomarkers, and refine autoantibody profiling. Shifting the focus from purely mechanistic models to practical diagnostic translation will equip clinicians with the objective evidence required to risk-stratify patients and monitor immune responses during therapeutic interventions. We are privileged to have this Research Topic led by an expert international editorial team, including Juan Sebastian Izquierdo-Condoy and Esteban Ortiz-Prado from the University of the Americas (Ecuador), along with Manuel Colomé-Hidalgo from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic).
