Could the smell of chocolate help you power through leg day? 🍫 A new Frontiers-Physiology study, covered by The Independent, BILD, Forbes and The Times, found that smelling chocolate during a fasted leg workout may improve performance without increasing perceived effort. In a study of 23 moderately trained men, smelling 90% dark chocolate was associated with around 18 additional reps per set, while milk chocolate added around 9 reps and made the workout more enjoyable. Researchers suggest that familiar food scents may act as learned cues, signalling to the brain that a satiating food is nearby and triggering a sense of fullness even without eating. The effect may not be unique to chocolate, with other familiar and appealing food scents potentially producing similar responses. From Davos to Dalian. And we’re not stopping there. Frontiers Science House is taking science to the places where global priorities are being shaped. After launching in Davos, our first roadshow stop took us to Dalian, China, for the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of the New Champions. Now, the next stop is taking shape. As we prepare to bring Frontiers Science House to another major moment on the global agenda, revisit the film that captures the ambition behind it: connecting science, policy and partnership to help turn knowledge into action. The next chapter is coming soon. Watch the film ⬇️ #OpenScienceChampions

Does seagrass 'give birth' rather than clone itself? A new study published in Frontiers in Conservation Science and featured by IFLScience found that Amphibolis antarctica produces genetically unique offspring through sexual reproduction, challenging the long-held assumption that these seedlings were 'clones'. DNA and breeding evidence confirmed that seedlings were only produced when male and female plants were together, offering new insights into how seagrass meadows reproduce and how they can be better protected. Seagrass meadows are among the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth and can store carbon up to 35 times more efficiently than tropical rainforests. Making research like this openly accessible helps new discoveries reach the wider scientific community, supporting the advances needed to protect these vital ecosystems. How do wild chimpanzees know which plants might help them heal? In Uganda’s Budongo Forest, Dr. Elodie Freymann observed chimpanzees using medicinal plants on their own wounds and those of others. Her research, published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, found that some of the plants they selected have antimicrobial and wound-healing properties, raising fascinating questions about what animals can learn from the natural world. The discovery was built through years of close observation in the field, piece by piece, showing how patient research can reveal unexpected connections between animal behaviour and medicine. 🎥 Watch Dr. Freymann share the story behind the discovery: https://lnkd.in/dgqs-Y_k #AnimalBehaviour #Conservation #Ecology #Wildlife
