Things That Go Bump in Prime Time

Vancouver — In a recent episode of "Supernatural," the two lead characters, both good-looking men in their 20's, walked down the hallway of an abandoned, haunted insane asylum. "Hey, Sam," one said to the other. "Who do you think is a hotter psychic, Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt or you?" The line was an acknowledgment of the large number of current shows (the hot psychics appear on "Medium" and "Ghost Whisperer," respectively) that share the otherworldly subject matter. But it was also an indication of the wry, self-aware humor that has made this show stand out.

"Supernatural," shown on Tuesday nights, chronicles the adventures of two brothers who crisscross the country's back roads in a 1967 Chevy, pursuing and destroying evil as they search for their missing father. The show has emerged as WB's only new hit of the fall season so far, attracting a loyal audience of young female viewers as well as bringing in more young men, which is one of the network's main goals.

Before its debut in September, "Supernatural" was just one of a crowded field. "We were in that mix, the one-word genre shows," said Eric Kripke, 31, the show's creator, in reference to "Threshold," "Surface" and "Invasion," new science fiction series begat by the success of "Lost."

"But it's like, we're a horror show," Mr. Kripke said. "We weren't a paranoid, government-conspiracy, alien thing. We weren't an endless-mystery 'Lost'-style format. We're just this rollicking, red-blooded horror movie."

Put the emphasis on the word "movie." "Supernatural" aims at the audience of spooky box-office winners like "The Grudge," "The Ring" and the recent remake of "The Amityville Horror," rather than looking to television for prototypes. David Janollari, WB's president of entertainment, said that when he met Mr. Kripke and heard the pitch for a weekly horror series, he thought, "That territory is being mined in the feature world, but we're not servicing it on television."

In each episode, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) travel to a new location where they suspect something dark and unearthly is happening: Mr. Kripke uses urban legends like the Hook Man (who rips open unsuspecting young couples) and Bloody Mary (who kills anyone stupid enough to say her name three times while looking in the mirror) to provide story fodder. He described these legends as "these gory little stories that are really fun to tell," and said they had interested him since childhood.

Jared Keeps Spirits High

JARED PADALECKI was 17 and had a school holiday job as a ranch-hand in rural Texas when his parents drove up and told him he had won a nationwide search to be a trophy presenter at the 1999 Teen Choice Awards.

"I'd attended the auditions at Planet Hollywood in San Antonio and won, so I was flown to Los Angeles and just stood to one side of the stage with a surfboard while Freddie Prinze Jr won an award for Best Kisser or Best Hot Spunk or something," Padalecki recalls.

But he didn't go unnoticed.

Approached by an agent, he agreed to be represented, and within a year was starring in a regular role as Dean Forrester, the all-American boyfriend of Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) in the hit series Gilmore Girls.

But an acting career was not quite what his parents had in mind for their son. "My elder brother was a star basketballer – one of those looks-to-die-for stud athletes who the girls chase everywhere," Padalecki says.

"Mum and Dad imagined I, too, was going to make it in sport. I was OK at it, but when I told Dad I wanted to quit sports and take up theatre, he was really shaken.

"He's fine about it now, but back then it wasn't at all what he saw me doing."

It's no surprise Padalecki's dad is fine about it now. His son played sweet-natured Dean on Gilmore Girls for five years, earning a very healthy salary, until the scriptwriters decided it was time for Dean and Rory to split and Dean should go off and marry someone else.

Then came a pilot for Young MacGyver, which wasn't picked up.

Later, Padalecki, 23, was asked to audition for the starring role of Sam Winchester in the "spooky" thriller series Supernatural.

The show has become a big hit with younger viewers in the US.

Padalecki plays Sam, who with older brother Dean (Smallville's Jensen Ackles), travels across America in search of their father, who disappeared in mysterious circumstances. "The boys' dad believed a malevolent force killed their mother, so he sets out in search of the truth and disappears," Padalecki says.

"Dean and Sam go in search of their father and each week face ghosts and unexplained phenomena.

"The show contains a lot of mythology. Sam's a sort of reluctant hero who wonders if he's going to have to pay the ultimate price for the sins of his dad."

Supernatural has surprised US critics with the way it has a struck a chord with viewers. "With shows like Medium and Ghost Whisperer and now this one doing so well, there's a big audience out there for stories involving characters who, in some way have contact with the 'other side'," Padalecki says.

His first big movie was Flight of the Phoenix, followed by the Steve Martin hit Cheaper By the Dozen.

OH JARED. How I love you.

Interview from People that can be found here.

What's your type?
Me and my buddies say, "Someone who gets it." Gets sarcasm, gets high-brow humor. Ultimately, someone who you can pal around with and also be intimate with. Someone who can laugh at your jokes – it may sound cheesy, but someone who can be your best friend as well as your lover.

What's the sexiest thing a woman can wear?
I'm into a casual-dressing girl: blue jeans and a tank top is super sexy. But the sexiest thing on a girl – when I see it I'm like, oh my God – is these little tight boxers. Don't get me wrong – g-strings are fine – but those cover a little, to where it's just enough.

Do you and costar Jared Padalecki ever go out carousing?
I do my best to corrupt the little guy, but sometimes I've got to respect his relationship (with actress Sandra McCoy).

How about the fan love? Any wild moments?
Sometimes if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time and you walk out of a bar and a guy's girlfriend recognizes you and the guy doesn't like it too much and starts hollering at you – that can get tricky. That happened to Jared and me a couple of months ago.

What's your hidden talent?
I have a buddy of mine who's a musician and I play guitar and sing quite a bit with him.

What's the best present you've ever given a woman?
I would say it was a black pearl ring that I designed for her. The pearl I picked up in Tahiti at a market and fished through a bowl full of these pearls until I found my favorite one. The worst gift that I ever gave a girl was a suitcase for Christmas. As in, "I can't think of anything to give you, but here's a new suitcase." Afterward, I was like, "What were you thinking, idiot?"

He is so either doing Jared or has the major hots for him. You cannot convince me otherwise. --- "Someone who can laugh at your jokes – it may sound cheesy, but someone who can be your best friend as well as your lover."

Oh, so you mean like Jared then, right Jen???
