KnowTheChain's 2026 food and beverage benchmark is out — and only 24% of companies assessed disclose any engagement with affected workers on forced labor risks. The broader picture from the World Benchmarking Alliance is similarly stark: fewer than 10% of the world's most influential companies assess human rights risks in supply chains, and fewer than 5% pay a living wage. 79% of farmworkers surveyed on US farms experienced at least one form of potential force, fraud, or coercion in their workplace. That's not a statistic from an audit. That's workers telling us directly, through Nonechka, powered by the Ulula Worker Voice Survey tool. Polaris (formerly Polaris Project) just published two new research briefs drawing on responses from 2,900+ agricultural workers employed in the US between 2021 and 2024. The findings are stark: the conditions that enable labor trafficking aren't edge cases. They're embedded in how recruitment and employment in US agriculture routinely work — from H-2A visa dependency to fee-charging recruiters to workers unable to leave. This is why worker voice data exists. To surface what workers are actually experiencing, in their own words, through a channel they can reach. We're proud that Nonechka data sits at the core of this research. And we're grateful to Polaris for the rigor they've brought to translating those voices into evidence that policymakers, supply chain leaders, and civil society can act on. What does an effective grievance channel actually look like in practice? Last week in Granada, we got to hear it directly from the workers and organizations using one. The Ulula Team at EcoVadis was proud to attend the Foros International Event — one of Spain’s important gatherings dedicated to ethical trade and human rights, hosted by our client, Asociación Foros de Comercio Ético, and supported by major retailers across the UK and Europe. Alfonso Herías moderated an expert panel on effective communication channels within organizations. This session brought together representatives from innocent drinks, a local trade union representative (UGT-FICA), and a grower participating in the program (Limonar de Santomera) to share their firsthand experiences using Canal Foros, the grievance mechanism we developed together with Spain Ethical Trade Forums. Hearing directly from a grower and a union rep about how the channel works on the ground — what it enables, what it changes, what still needs to improve — is exactly the kind of feedback that makes worker voice meaningful. Aparna Moitra, Ph.D. from the Ulula Team at EcoVadis was recently invited to attend a World Economic Forum workshop in London as part of the Global Data Partnership Against Forced Labor — a multi-stakeholder initiative bringing together governments, businesses, international organizations, and civil society. The primary concern in the room: forced labor continues to rise even as data availability grows. The bottleneck isn't information — it's the fragmentation of it, and the gap between visibility and action. Two things that stuck: 🔹 Federated data infrastructure isn't just a technical choice; it's a governance one. Keeping data where it lives, while enabling collective intelligence, changes what's possible for multi-stakeholder trust. 🔹 The goal isn't a better risk map. It's actionable insights that lead to measurable reductions in exploitation — especially on specific use cases like recruitment fees.
