We recently hosted a webinar for Alacrity Canada focused on the Canadian grant landscape and the ways businesses can identify, access, and strategically leverage government funding opportunities. A key area of focus was the growing range of opportunities available to companies operating in the defence and dual-use sectors, including the Regional Defence Investment Initiative (RDII) and Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS). We also covered funding pathways supporting AI adoption, commercialization, and business growth, including opportunities available through Scale AI and the Business Scale-Up and Productivity (BSP) program. The level of engagement and discussion throughout the webinar reflected the strong interest businesses have in navigating Canada’s evolving funding landscape. The Clean Electricity ITC is the newest of Canada’s five Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits, supporting investments that expand and strengthen Canada’s clean electricity system. Eligible organizations may receive a refundable tax credit of up to 15% of the capital cost of qualifying clean electricity property. Eligible investments may include: • Solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and nuclear energy equipment • Stationary electricity and pumped-hydro storage systems • Interprovincial electricity transmission equipment • Certain waste biomass generation and qualified natural gas energy systems • Eligible equipment used to refurbish existing clean electricity property One of the key features of this credit is the wide range of organizations that may be eligible. In addition to taxable Canadian corporations, certain provincial and territorial Crown corporations, municipality- or Indigenous-owned corporations, pension corporations, qualifying trusts, the Canada Infrastructure Bank, and the Canada Growth Fund may qualify. Qualifying equipment must generally be new, situated in Canada, and intended for use exclusively in Canada. Meeting the applicable labour requirements is necessary to receive the full 15% rate; otherwise, the rate is reduced by 10%. Investing in clean electricity generation, storage, or transmission? Building Canada’s clean technology supply chain requires investment in the equipment and infrastructure that make production possible. The Clean Technology Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit is a refundable credit that can support you in investment for clean technology manufacturing, processing, and critical mineral activities in Canada. Taxable Canadian corporations, including corporations that are members of a partnership, may receive a credit of up to 30% of the capital cost of eligible property. Eligible investments may include: • Machinery and equipment used to manufacture or process clean technologies • Specialized tooling and certain property attached to manufacturing facilities • Equipment used to extract, process, or recycle eligible critical minerals • Industrial vehicles and equipment used at mines, wells, or tailing ponds The credit may support activities such as manufacturing technologies and equipment for solar, wind, hydroelectric power, energy storage, heat pumps, hydrogen, zero-emission vehicles, and nuclear energy, as well as activities involving eligible critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, graphite, and rare earth elements. Qualifying property must generally be new, situated in Canada, and intended for use exclusively in Canada. Unlike the other Clean Economy ITCs, the CTM ITC is not subject to labour requirements. The Clean Hydrogen ITC, one of Canada’s five Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits, provides refundable support for investments in low-carbon hydrogen production. Taxable Canadian corporations may receive a credit of up to 40% of eligible capital costs. The rate depends on the expected carbon intensity of the hydrogen produced: • 40% for carbon intensity below 0.75 • 25% for carbon intensity from 0.75 to below 2 • 15% for carbon intensity from 2 to below 4 Eligible clean ammonia equipment may also receive a 15% credit. These rates apply to qualifying property available for use before 2034 and are reduced for property available for use in 2034. Eligible projects may include hydrogen production through water electrolysis or eligible hydrocarbons, as well as equipment used for purification, compression, storage, and the conversion of clean hydrogen into ammonia. The property must generally be new, located in Canada, and used for a qualified clean hydrogen project. Canada’s Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage Investment Tax Credit is designed to support major carbon-reduction investments across emissions-intensive industries. Taxable Canadian corporations may be eligible for credit rates of up to: • 60% for direct air capture equipment • 50% for other carbon capture equipment • 37.5% for carbon transportation, storage, and use equipment Eligible projects may involve: • Capturing CO₂ that would otherwise enter the atmosphere • Direct air capture • Transporting captured carbon • Permanently storing carbon in dedicated geological storage • Using captured carbon in a qualified concrete storage process The credit may be particularly relevant to companies operating in energy, fuels, concrete, chemicals, manufacturing, and other emissions-intensive sectors developing qualified carbon capture projects. As Canada continues to invest in a cleaner economy, the Canada Revenue Agency administers a suite of Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) designed to encourage investment in clean technologies and energy projects. These refundable tax credits are designed to support businesses investing in projects and property that contribute to Canada’s transition to a net-zero economy.
