The minerals needed to power the clean energy transition are buried deep underground. Recovering them faster and more efficiently is one of the most urgent challenges in mining today. Ideon Technologies is taking a step that could fundamentally change the speed at which we solve that challenge. 👉 We've joined a landmark international consortium conducting the world's first high-resolution muon imaging experiment powered by a compact laser-plasma accelerator. Ideon already uses cosmic-ray muons — particles born from supernova explosions — to see through hundreds of metres of rock. One limitation has always been the fact that we must wait for the universe to generate a suitable volume of muons. Passive muon imaging can thus take hours, weeks, or months depending on depth and resolution required. A directed, laser-driven muon source changes that equation entirely. Instead of waiting for nature to deliver the signal, generating it on demand could compress subsurface imaging timelines by orders of magnitude. The Ideon team is involved in experiments to do just that at the Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics Center (ELI-NP) facility in Romania starting this month, alongside world-class partners from The University of Texas at Austin (which leads the project under Principal Investigator Dr. Calin Hojbota, PhD), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), University of Düsseldorf, ELI Beamlines Facility, and TAU Systems. This is international innovation in action. Thank you to the teams involved for welcoming us so warmly. #CriticalMinerals #MuonImaging #Mining #CleanEnergy #DeepTech #Innovation https://lnkd.in/ghVmAM4c

World pioneer in cosmic-ray muon tomography, providing unique insights to those who explore beneath the Earth’s surface.
About us
Ideon Technologies uses the energy from supernova explosions to image deep beneath the Earth’s surface. The world pioneer in cosmic-ray muon tomography, we have developed the Ideon REVEAL™ Subsurface Intelligence Platform™, which integrates proprietary detectors, imaging systems, inversion technologies, and artificial intelligence to provide x-ray-like visibility underground. By transforming muon data into reliable 3D density maps, Ideon helps geologists identify, map, characterize, and monitor mineral deposits with confidence. This reduces risk and cost of traditional methods, while saving time, optimizing return, and minimizing environmental impact across the mining value chain. In turn, this is helping accelerate the world’s transition to low-impact mining and transform how companies recover the critical minerals required to power the global shift to clean energy – improving peoples’ lives and enhancing economic prosperity.

Thank you, James Stent and Mining Magazine. "We don't want to be a data provider. We want to solve some of the gnarliest subsurface problems in mining." -- Gary Agnew, Co-founder & CEO of Ideon Technologies
Ideon Technologies has just about the best hook in mining technology. It senses #muons, formed when cosmic rays from ancient #supernovae crash into Earth's atmosphere at nearly the speed of light, and uses these data to map mineral deposits. The #Vancouver-based company, spun out of a Canadian government-run laboratory in 2019, started out focused on exploration. But, as #mining majors focused more on what they already operated, Ideon learned its #tomography technology could be used to make mines run better. Ideon estimates that under-recovery in existing mines is worth the output of somewhere in the range of six to eight tier one mines annually. Mining Magazine spoke to Ideon's chief executive and co-founder, Gary Agnew, about moving beyond the muon and winning over the mining industry from the top five down. https://lnkd.in/e3Kuu-iw Ideon is adding more sensors to its #muon detection | Credits: Ideon Technologies

👉 Does muon tomography take waaaaay longer than other geophysics? ❌ Nope. It’s true that muon imaging is passive and depends on naturally occurring cosmic-ray muons, so acquisition time matters. Optimal data acquisition time can range from hours near surface, to weeks in block caving environments (imaging from underground drives), to months in exploration (imaging from deep drillholes). Required imaging time is determined by a combination of: • Target depth • Detector geometry • Required resolution • Rock density • Detector array size • Target size • Density contrast Increasing the detector array can materially reduce imaging time. Put simply: more detector area captures more muons, accelerating statistical confidence. Even simpler: half the imaging time by doubling the number of sensors. But the more important metric is end-to-end time to value. With the Ideon REVEAL® Subsurface Intelligence Platform®, data processing, modelling, and interpretation proceed *in parallel* with ongoing data acquisition. That means no fragmented consultant workflow, no delayed handoffs, no disconnected CSV files, and no months-long lag between field data and usable intelligence. Muon tomography may take time to acquire, but Ideon compresses the path from data collection to decision-grade intelligence. In many cases, the full cycle for drilling (planning, permitting, logistics, drilling, core handling, assays, interpretation, and model updates) can take much longer. 👉 Download our white paper comparing techniques to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gT76SkXq

👉 Muon tomography only works for massive sulphides or uranium. It’s certainly not helpful for gold or low-grade porphyry systems. ❌ Nope The truth is, muon tomography is not a commodity-specific technology. It is a density-intelligence technology. It works best where there is meaningful density contrast. That is why massive sulphides, uranium systems, skarns, caves, voids, and dense alteration systems are especially attractive applications. BUT, applicability depends more on density contrast, geometry, depth, scale, and decision context than commodity type alone. Strong applications include: > Exploration targeting > Resource characterization > Alteration and lithological mapping > Cave monitoring > Void and air-gap detection > Geotechnical hazard mapping > Remnant ore identification > Waste characterization > Structural interpretation > Tonnage reconciliation > Fluid saturation monitoring > Heap leach and stockpile monitoring > Total mass measurement We are often asked if we can detect gold, which often occurs in trace volumes or in small veins. Without a meaningful density contrast to measure, the answer is no. HOWEVER, we certainly can detect and map the contacts between high-contrast geological units, which is often where gold occurs. This can help with decision-making about how to target the next drillhole. In porphyry systems, we have used muon tomography to generate high-resolution 3D density models that clearly identify lithological boundaries, structural controls, and alteration halos – the key drivers of mineralization in these deposits. Across multiple projects, muon tomography has demonstrated the ability to map broad alteration zones and subtle density variations, which correlate spatially with known mineralization halos and match geological models. #mythbusted #muontomography #density
