What lessons do Vancouver’s sustainable city-making efforts offer designers trying to make cities more livable? DIALOG Intern Architect Yunyi Tan will be a guest speaker during “A Necessary Path Toward Livable Cities: Sustainable Design Practice and the Exploration of Regenerative Design,” a Mandarin-language online event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. PT on August 13.    Yunyi will use examples from DIALOG’s sustainability workflow, such as the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Student Housing project and research into multi-generational inclusive communities, to demonstrate how energy performance, carbon reduction, climate resilience, material strategies, and social sustainability can be integrated into architectural design.    The event will also discuss regenerative design, or “益生设计,” as an emerging direction beyond conventional sustainable design, and reflect on its potential relevance to livable city-making in China. We design workplaces for what we can see. But what about what we hear? As part of Design Week Calgary, we hosted an in-studio panel exploring sound as a design material and how biophilic sound strategies can support wellbeing, focus, productivity, and inclusion. Bringing together perspectives from acoustics, psychology, design, and building systems, the discussion explored how biophilic sound strategies and intentional acoustic design can help create calmer, healthier, and more connected environments. From reducing distracting background noise to shaping spaces that better support focus and collaboration, sound plays a greater role in our experience of a workplace than we often realize. Work has started on a project led by DIALOG that will transform and expand the Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin in the City of Lethbridge, AB. The project will revitalize existing gallery spaces and add new features, both indoor and outdoor. Highlights include:  ➡️Park-side entrance and patio that opens onto Galt Gardens   ➡️Food services area, including a cafe and catering kitchen  ➡️'Listening Garden’, an outdoor space for gathering, relaxation, reflection and public art  ➡️Mixed-use workshop for exhibition-building, programs and events     The gallery will be made more accessible to people of all abilities with the addition of more entrances and a barrier-free lower level in the former Library building. DIALOG was honoured to take part in a major milestone for what will be the world’s first disability-focused arts learning campus.  On June 29 in Calgary, AB, the National accessArts Centre presented by TD (NaAC), celebrated the beginning of construction on the Joseph Chung Centre for Creativity, designed by DIALOG – one of the two new facilities on the campus. The $20 million Chung Centre will house a state-of-the-art, accessible performance space for theatre and dance; an art gallery; a sound, audio, and tech (SAT) lab; and a café operated by people with disabilities. Building with Bio-Based Materials 🌿 Earlier this year, the Toronto BioBuild Collective (TBBC), including more than 60 volunteers and six Toronto-based architectural practices in collaboration with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), designed, tested, and built a series of wall assemblies using only bio-based materials. These mock-ups assess the viability of bio-based construction while identifying challenges to wider adoption. Envelope as Education, a research and demonstration initiative led by DIALOG with TBBC, that explores how conventional institutional building envelopes can be redesigned using bio-based, low-carbon, and circular materials. The project evaluates renewable materials for embodied carbon reduction, local sourcing potential, constructability, durability, circularity, and thermal performance. The resulting wall assembly demonstrates that a high-performance building envelope can be achieved with significantly lower embodied carbon without compromising thermal performance.
