After a years-long wave of consolidation in Canada’s oilpatch, the head of one Alberta bank says there’s a new generation of energy companies forming on the sidelines. After a massive year of mergers and acquisitions for Canadian energy — totalling more than $31 billion — smaller players are emerging in the wake, says Chris Turchansky, the chief executive of ATB Financial. • ATB Financial announced a strong start to the year with its first-quarter results for the period ending June 30. Fueled by steady momentum and robust client engagement, total revenue rose 17.6% year-over-year to $694.2 million, total deposits grew by 19.1% to $52.6 billion, and net loans reached $61.6 billion. Q1 saw a strategic expansion of the senior leadership team with Matt Evans, CFA joining as the new Head of Wealth and Investment Management, and Jocelyn T. taking on a new role as Group Head of Everyday Financial Services. "Our first-quarter results reflect continued momentum across our business and demonstrate the trust our clients place in our teams," said Chris Turchansky, President and CEO of ATB Financial. "While we are pleased with the steady progress in our core operations, we remain very mindful of the economic realities, cost-of-living pressures and broader market uncertainties many families and local businesses continue to navigate. Our focus is on staying disciplined, offering practical guidance, and supporting our clients through both the opportunities and challenges ahead." There’s a bright side for business in these uncertain times. In today's global economy, ongoing disruptions around trade, geopolitical conflict, and market volatility are the new baseline. But waiting on the sidelines for stability isn't a strategy. In a recent op-ed for The Globe and Mail, Greg Greer, Head of Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities at ATB Cormark Capital Markets, outlines why Canadian businesses hold distinct advantages heading into the back half of the year: • Strategic Financing Window: Stable long-term borrowing costs and contained inflation create a supportive backdrop for businesses to secure capital and invest for the future. • Infrastructure & Energy Momentum: Growing alignment between governments to tackle infrastructure bottlenecks and expand export capacity provides a clear path to long-term economic growth. "The more than $33-billion invested so far this year in foreign-issuer Canadian-dollar bonds demonstrates that there is capital available to invest. The approximately $58-billion invested by non-residents in Canadian securities indicates their confidence in Canada’s economy." - Greg Greer Uncertainty will continue to drum, but Canadian businesses are entering this period from a position of credibility, diversification, and confidence. Another incredible year at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in the books! 🎵 A huge thank you to ATB team members like Ariana Reusch who helped bring our “What Are You Saving For?” contest activation to life on the Island. From saving for first homes and dream trips to investing in personal passions, learning our community’s goals, big and small, was a wonderful reminder of what everyday life can look like. It takes dedicated team members like Ariana to spark those meaningful conversations, turn big ideas into reality, and make financial goals feel possible. 💙 Thank you to our entire ATB Team on the ground, and the Calgary Folk Music Festival team and volunteers for making this weekend so unforgettable!

  • Some weekends leave you tired, others leave you inspired 🚴💙 This year, 13 ATB team members rode more than 200 kilometres each in the Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer, raising over $38,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Six of our riders were taking on the Tour for the very first time. What makes this event especially meaningful is that every dollar raised stays in Alberta, helping fund cancer research and support Albertans and their families when they need it most. It’s also an opportunity to connect with colleagues from across ATB, coming together around one shared goal: making a difference in the communities we serve. Thank you to everyone who rode, donated, volunteered, and cheered us on. We’re already looking forward to coming back even bigger and better next year, with our sights on raising more than $50,000! #TeamATB

  • Once again, trade headlines are moving quickly 💨 The latest announcement from the U.S. administration proposes new tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, adding another layer of uncertainty for businesses and the broader economy. While there’s still time for negotiations and legal challenges before the proposed measures take effect, the announcement is an important reminder that the trade landscape continues to evolve. At times like these, perspective is just as important as the headlines—and we’ve navigated this before. The ATB Economics team is closely monitoring the situation and taking a measured approach. While some industries and provinces could face more significant impacts than others, it’s important to separate uncertainty from outcomes. As we’ve seen over the last year, not every tariff announcement becomes a reality. In the latest edition of The Twenty-Four, our economists break down: • Which goods are impacted • Which provinces are most impacted • What this could mean for Canadian businesses and interest rates • Why a measured, long term perspective matters Read the full analysis: https://lnkd.in/gdWaT9Ex

In June we celebrated an incredible Pride Month at ATB, full of joy, celebration, and giving back to the community. We kicked off the month at the Edmonton Drag Festival, followed by the Boyle Street Pride Celebration, ATB's Pride Lunch, and so many other meaningful events. While June has come to a close, Pride isn't something we celebrate for just one month; it's something we strive to live every day by creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong and can bring their whole selves to work. Here's to carrying that spirit forward, lifting each other up, and continuing to build a more inclusive future together. 🌈🫶 #TeamATB

  • The boots are being put away, but the momentum is only beginning. As our CEO, Chris Turchansky, reflects on ten days on the ground at the Calgary Stampede, we are reminded of what makes this world-class event so special. It’s a true celebration of Alberta's heritage, community, and entrepreneurial spirit. But for ATB, supporting this province isn't just about a ten day event. It's a 365-day-a-year commitment. As the largest financial institution headquartered in Western Canada, we have deep roots here. Even as we have grown, our purpose remains unchanged: to power possibility for our more than 850,000 clients and the communities we serve.

10 days. 10 full days. As the dust settles on another incredible Calgary Stampede, I’m walking away with an overwhelming sense of energy and optimism for what’s ahead. I spent the full stretch on the ground connecting deeply with our team members, our clients, and the economic leaders driving this province forward. I saw a number of people come out to check in on Alberta and enjoy the Greatest Outdoor Show Earth. It’s great that they dropped by to see the potential in our energy sector and experience what makes our agriculture, and tourism sectors great. They felt the energy and saw the potential we see here each and every day. Now, as the excitement of the Stampede starts to fade and so many visitors head home, I'm proud that ATB Financial's commitment remains. We are always here. Carrying a year-round belief in the strength and resilience of Albertans. Our strategy is built on the fact that we know Alberta and Albertans and provide the right expertise at the right time. We live in these communities, we understand the local economic nuances, and we are fiercely committed to powering the possibility of every business owner and entrepreneur who calls this province home. Thank you to our incredible clients for the real, raw, and inspiring conversations over the last 10 days. To our ATB team (who’s feet are still recovering) thank you for showing up like nobody else can and for all you do to make Alberta a truly vibrant and inspiring place. #CalgaryStampede #AlbertaBusiness #EconomicGrowth @ATBFinancial
