Octopuses are highly intelligent, emotionally complex animals with advanced problem-solving abilities, sensory perception, and a strong need for environmental stimulation.

I am deeply concerned about whether the current captive environment provided to the octopus at Sea Life (operated by Merlin Entertainments) can adequately meet its behavioural and welfare needs.

Octopuses require:
• large, enriched, naturalistic spaces
• opportunities for exploration and hiding
• stable water quality and environmental variation
• minimal stress and minimal human disturbance

I’m calling for Merlin Entertainments to work with marine biologists and reputable cephalopod sanctuaries to explore relocation options that would better support this animal’s well-being.

This is not an attack on staff or the organisation. It is a compassionate request for the highest possible welfare standard for a sentient creature that may be struggling in captivity.

Please support this petition so that the octopus can be assessed by independent experts and, where appropriate, moved to a sanctuary setting designed for cephalopod welfare.
