RonovanWrites Weekly Haiku
Poetry Prompt Challenge #80

This two word combo brought me right back to the 80’s.

This week’s prompt words are:  Style & Fresh

Back in the 80’s,
Your style was funky fresh,
Or it was straight whack.

This may not be a proper haiku but it was fun and a good laugh for Monday morning.

Sunday Sonnet

RonovanWrites Weekly Haiku
Poetry Prompt Challenge #70

Ronovan enjoys racking our brains a little too much, I think.

This week’s prompt words are:  Crane & Gold

Expect great changes,
When we broaden our thinking,
Reap gold in wisdom.

Expect great changes when we broaden our thinking.
When we broaden our thinking, reap gold in wisdom.

A Bit Challenging

My mood has been somewhat -wishy washy- this past week.  I thought about taking a break from all social media, blogging, etc. Basically… people in general. I’ve been feeling an overwhelming need to withdraw. Not really sure why. I even passed up Ronovan’s Haiku Challenge last week.  Thought about doing the same again this week.  Then I just sat here.  Figured, let me just suck it up and write a haiku.  What’s the big deal?  Of course, me being me, I need to check the words from last week and see how to incorporate them with this week’s prompt words and still come up with something that has a personal meaning to where my mind is presently at.

Ronovan Writes Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge #67 Prompt Words: Cheer & Call and Challenge #68 Prompt Words: Muse & Pen.  No problemo.  Right?  Write.

I’m never good with titles, and giving this haiku one proved to be a little difficult.  My reason for giving it this title is mostly because of what the haiku itself is saying.  It’s not always an easy task to think about one’s past and still move forward optimistically and confident.  Sometimes it can be …

A Bit Challenging
Reflect on dried ink,
As optimism guides you,
With renewed command.

Decided to use synonyms this week:
cheer – optimism
call – command
muse – reflect
pen – ink

My take on opposing themes:
Reflecting (on the past) & Renewed (looking to the future)

Hope you guys enjoyed.

Pheromonial Dance

RonovanWrites Weekly Haiku
Prompt Challenge #64Tide & Flesh

Pheromonial Dance
The scent of his flesh,
Causes waves of emotion,
Desire takes hold.

The undercurrent,
Draws us towards each other,
As our flesh glistens.

Ravenous creatures,
Feeding on one another,
In streaming moonlight.

When the tide rolls out,
Nothing else to do but sleep,
Our bare skin embraced.

The Trade Off

Ronovan Writes Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge #63

I’m not going to lie, I saw Ronovan’s prompt choices and rolled my eyes. I’m not sure if this is something anyone else who participates in these weekly haiku challenges does but, when I see two words that I can relate to I feel like Ronovan is handing them to ME directly, kind of like – here, these are totally for you.  Then there are the weeks that I see words like Stag & Noise and think, he is doing this to ME on purpose just to see if I can still come up with anything relative to my story.  I’m convinced this is a side effect of one too many haiku challenges! However, even with the aforementioned eye roll (my trademark), I actually could not stop writing. (HA! So there!) 🙂

#1 – Don’t fuss over me,
Living in solitary,
And roaring silence.

#2 – Me, myself and I.
Doing just fine, without you,
and the turbulence.

#3 – Incessant howling,
The menacing wolf spreads fear,
Alone in the pack.

#4 – Your mind numbing squawk,
Reminds me time and again,
Silence is golden.

More Vino Please

RonovanWrites Weekly Haiku
Poetry Prompt Challenge #61

This week prompt words:  Tears & Wine

My first entry is not a proper haiku but it’s the first thing my brain came up with and I like it.  The second is proper and I like it just as much.  Submitting both since I couldn’t decide between the two. (Yikes! Metaphor for my life, I guess. Lol)

Haiku #1
Daunting memories,
Brings tears and tears the heartstrings,
Nothing wine can’t fix.

Haiku #2
Crying in my glass,
Such a waste of wine and tears,
And a waste of years.

Thanks, Ronovan.  All this wine talk, I could use a glass right about now…minus the tears! 🙂

A Year in Haiku

You know that old adage, time flies when you’re having fun? Looks like there is definitely some truth to that statement.  Well, time flies by anyway so why not do something you enjoy.  At least you’ll have something to look forward to on a daily (or weekly) basis. I can hardly believe a year has passed since I stumbled upon RonovanWrites and his Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge.

While on Twitter, I started noticing all these little poems people were posting.  They were so wordy and full of meaning in only 140 characters.  Each had a different hashtag but as days went on I’d notice the same hashtags pop up on different poems.  I thought maybe it was a certain theme or topic but I just couldn’t figure out the link.  Finally, I asked one of the women I met through my blog, who I noticed was a participant in this poetry, what it was all about.  She explained about poetry prompts and gave me the names of a few accounts to check out on Twitter.

Long story short, I eventually found this Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge in it’s 8th week.  Initially, I was like… ugh, Haiku?  What the heck is Haiku anyway?  I remember hearing about it in grade school when we had brief lessons on poetry style but that was about it.  Luckily, Ronovan had a section on his blog that explained exactly what Haiku is.  Three lines of poetry, each line is broken down into syllables (5/7/5), the 1st & 2nd lines should be a complete sentence and the 2nd & 3rd lines should also be a complete sentence.  And if you’ve mastered the art, your Haiku will have two opposing themes.

I tried my hand at it.  It’s definitely not easy to write only three lines of poetry that has real meaning, let alone having to count syllables.  However, once you get the knack of it, it’s very rewarding.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much, after my first try, I went back and made up for the ones I had missed since there were only 7.  I’ve participated in every week’s challenge, some weeks I had more to say than others and came up with more than one Haiku.  And now, here we are at Week #60.  My year in Haiku has been nothing short of amazing.  The other bloggers that participate have become regulars and I always look forward to reading their entries as well.

If you are inclined, all of my Haiku are here, for you to enjoy.

College Bound

This week’s haiku prompt challenge words, Bird & Red, immediately caught my attention because my favorite bird is the cardinal and I’ve had a picture I planned to use a few weeks ago – waiting in the wings (no pun intended).  However, as I started playing with the words my brain was drawn to more of a metaphorical haiku for several of my friends that have just sent their first born off to college.  So, I ended up with two haiku for week #59.

College Bound
Flying from their nests,
Non-stop tears and a red nose,
Your babe’s fully grown.

Year Round Beauty
A breathtaking bird,
Beautiful red cardinal.
From winter to fall.

As always, thank you to RonovanWrites for hosting our Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge.
