Alzheimers Art Quilts for sale.

these four fantastic quilts from 4 famous quilters are for sale, at the extremely reasonable (depending on your view - not to mention your pocket) price of just $10,000.00. The negative to purchasing one of these beauties is the risk of giving Ami Sims a heart attack, now that would never do. Ami is the hard working American quilter who is the driving force behind the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative where quilters worldwide make tiny quilts for auction to raise funds for Alzheimer research.

Read all about the hilarious Ami, her latest fund raising promotion World Quilt Federation Smackdown featuring the 4 quilters and their quilts and of course view the WQF Smackdown Championship Belt. A lovely piece of blue creativity made by John Flynn, one of the quilt contenders............hmmm......just who's waist measurements did John Flynn use do you suppose?

Not feeling like coughing up Ten Thou just now?, well you can donate to the cause by voting for the quilt of your choice in the Viewer's Choice Award.

Madeira Celebration, Pastels and Hand Dyes

Sheila, with what will soon be Sappho's quilt.
Last week Sheila had been telling us of the search she was on to find a piece of fabric with a banana, or at the very least some tropical fruit, of course we all wanted to know what she was working on, Sheila always designs her own quilts, so knowing that another one was on the production line we all wanted a peek, and as promised, today she bought the flimsy along.

The quilt is for her Grand daughter Sappho, who was born on the island of Madeira, Sappho was only a toddler when her family came back home so Sheila has designed the quilt for Sappho with memories of her birth place and also of the visits Sheila and her Darling made to the Island.

The mauve's and purples for the mountains, and the lush greens of the tropical vegetation splashed with the vibrant flowers frame the central slash of Broderie Anglaise.

Sheila then features some of the many memories of Madeira amongst the lace piecing, the wonderful markets and abundant produce, waterfalls were everywhere and the most amazing treks along the irrigation canals,
Wine making of course, but another product Madeira is famous for is wicker, baskets and furniture and of course the beautiful lace making.
Then there is the thrill of daily survival, seriously folks, you should see the pics Sheila bought in, almost vertical mountain sides with the roads wending their way down, with the ocean below, far, far below. Oh and the Airport!, first time Sheila flew in she was surprised when the passengers applauded at the landing of the plane, then she found out why!

Wendy was inspired by Sue to try the four patch kaleidoscope, this quilt design has really taken hold with a few more in the pipeline, hopefully they will all be finished for the Christmas Fair, coming up soon.............real soon only 77 more productive days to go girls..........yikes......
although, I did google days to Christmas and found one website - Santa's Warehouse - that promised it was 693883 days to Christmas...........that I like, don't care if it is a computer conniption, I like it and I'm keeping it.

Lorraine made this beautiful quilt for her niece. Now I ask you, isn't it beautiful? Lorraine is adamant that this is the first and absolutely the last pastel and polka dot quilt she will ever make. Not a pastel lover our Lorraine.
However, I have to tell you the temptation to just snaffle that quilt and bring it home to love was almost overwhelming, only the thought of the tears and tantrums saved the day........oh not the nieces tears and tantrums, Lorraine's!
The flimsy on the table is also Lorraine's work, she was all set to do the workshop last week but an S.O.S. from her Darling saw her driving off to Brisbane, back almost home again, turn around, back to Brissy and finally home, now that is almost above and beyond. Lorraine promises to bring it in for a 'proper' pic when quilted. Proper? maybe I need to be forgetting the machine quilting and get back to the photography lessons..........oh these learning curves, almost too much for a body to bear.

Thankfully there was a rather yummy distraction in gallery room, The lovely and industrious ladies from the Palmwoods quilters group were visiting with us. Selling their luscious hand dyed fabrics.

These ladies are raising funds for their building fund via their hand dyed fabric sales. The credit card facilities were activated for yesterdays visit and I definitely saw smoke arising from the credit card machine, wow, girls, you really do know how to shop!
And you can see why, not only luscious fabrics, from the prettiest pastels (yep, got some) to the most vibrant, but also patterns and kits including some for table runners and various bags.
Just look at that beautiful burgundy bag above, the pic just doesn't do it justice.
And this tote, how cute is that!. Lovely fabrics, fantastic inspiration. Thank you Ladies for a wonderful visit.

A sad tale with a caring ending.

On the morning of the Quilt Show, while the girls were setting up for the Devonshire Teas, they noticed a group of three girls, Sarah, Lizzie and Leah, gathering leaves and piling them up. Things took a different twist when it was noticed that these young lassies placed a marker above the leaves.
One of our ladies went to investigate and found that these 3 caring lovely girls had found a dead possum and using the only thing they had available, the leaves and their hands, they buried him and marked his grave.
It was a source of conversation throughout the morning, how three wonderful little girls cared enough to take care of an animal that had died.
The pic was taken by one of the Devonshire tea ladies and passed on to me. I fuzzed the piccie, but girls you know who you are and if you would like a copy, let me know.

Quilt Show Countdow

It's full steam ahead now, most of the action at our Wednesday meeting is Quilt Show related.
Two of our group members have been at work putting a really cool display of members work into the window of the Old Buderim Post Office. The P.O. is now used by the Buderim War Memorial Community Association as an information center. And how do I know the display is really cool, well this young gent, mirrored in the glass told me so.....A closer view of some of the really cool not to mention beautifully done works displayed.

Meanwhile back at the Cottage, Fran and Marguerite were busy with Sheila putting our display into the glass cabinet. This cabinet resides in the Atrium, right by the entry door and each group gets 'display time'. Our time co-insides with our Quilt Show this year.

The afternoon sun was shining through onto the glass, so Fran and Patricia loaned their bodies to give a little shade, great work girls! Thanks.

A few closer views of the goodies. Of course we can't stuff a full sized quilt into the cabinet, but Marguerite came up with the brilliant idea of using some of her hexagons that one day will be a quilt.
Just love the tea cosy made with all those prairie points.
The local newspaper's photographer was rather taken by Fran and her Crazy Patch Chatelaine, (lower left below) of course Fran gave him one of her special biscuits, as she does, so we are all waiting with baited breath to see if Fran makes it onto the front page..........we will have to give her the title of Official Media Tart if that happens!

Betty's beautiful framed letters, made for her daughters.

Chantelle this week was courtesy of Denise, who wrestled another U.F.O. to the boards and converted it to a T.G.I.F. (Thank God Its Finished). It had been patiently waiting for its binding to be stitched down.
This particular quilt was started by Denise at a Medallion workshop in Rockhampton.
The medallion was then added to bit by bit, row by row, with a lot of thought and design by Denise. As she originally used fabrics she found at the local Spotlight Outlet she continued in that vein.
We have all heard the stories about sub quality quilting fabrics from Spotlight, well, this lovely quilt rather proves the opposite.
Denise had the quilt professionally quilted by Glenda Aitken in Rockhampton.
Another of Denise's 'crafted for the quilt' labels.

Now as you all know, quilters are an innovative lot, add to that mix, a needleworker, and then pour in a smidge of machine embroider and what do you end up with????
well, you end up with a lass who can overcome obstacles, like "My screw came loose! WHERE THE HECK DID IT GO...................ohhh well, I guess i can fix that' and so she did, and this is how.

And lastly, a pic of the Sunrise taken on Thursday Morning. The eldest Grandie had a sleepover and woke at 4.30 to go watch the sunrise.......again..........

Thursday Fundraiser - more pics....

Couldn't load as many pics as I would have liked at the time from the Thursday night girls Breast Cancer Fundraiser ( see previous post) so here are a few more pics, and I have to tell you, some of these beauties are ....dare I whisper it...ufo's........yes, really, all of this lusciousness can be unearthed in cupboards and boxes under beds all around the Sunshine Coast..........

Below we have a needlturn applique, so much work has been put into this. On the right there is a wonderfully vibrant Q.S.T or hourglass quilt, with someone's knitting project. Look at the tinsy little sewing machine bottom right, its almost hidden behind the buttons tin.
Jenny, who drew most of the prize winning tickets, along with Leticia and Judy, haming it up in the two bottom pics. Who would have thought that so much laughter and fun could be had from drawing a little bit of numbered paper from an old plastic bucket.

Sheila, enjoying a toast and the pink fairy trying to duck out of frame, gotcha Debbie!
Had to include this purple quilt and the little book of afirmations, looks really well leaved through
More of Jenny's ticket drawing with Judy playing straigt-man......er woman.

Looks like someone else doesn't want to finish their sampler quilt, and confessions to a very junior u.f.o., gee Debby, only 2 year old, surely its still a W.I..P.??
Guests really enjoying themselves, without spilling a drop I might add, and how about the cute little machine with a few more u.f.o.'s

Pink fascinators arrive and a W.I.P. from Marlene.
A bit of a backslide on the hearts Debby, that quilt show has been and gone!
Two cute Gollies, striding it out.
The Door Ladies, getting in the swing of things. Yep, counting all that lovely moolah would be stressful, any one can see how a small error could occur!

Again, It was a fun night and every thing went swimmingly. Congratulations to all involved.

Big Buderim Bash

Debbie and Janet were selling raffle tickets left and right as folks lined up for a chance to win one of these luscious quilts drawn at our Quilt Show on 12th July. The show runs for 2 days, 11th and 12th. for those of you who would like to visit for a yummy quilting fix.

This young Mum to be wouldn't say no to winning either quilt, but her eye is firmly fixed on the luscious pink quilt hanging across the room, machine embroidered bears and beds, sashed with a pink gingham.

Another hopeful winner with, 'Purple Passion', the green and purple lovely on the wall behind her.
Marguerite was astounded to find a machine doing its own thing, but after a bit we decided that there had to be a little man in there.

And this is the beautiful work being done by the clever little man in the Janome machine
Thread Artist Helen, showing her impressive skills, the hooped Calla Lilly in picture front is also one of Helen's pieces.
Pam modelling her wonderful creation, and showing us her crochet skills.. My fave bit of her vest is the square butterfly on the spiral.
Lyn asking Lois for a tip on fine brush strokes. There is a lovely desert scene in the works on this piece.
Spinners and Weavers leader, Dorothy was only too pleased to have some spinning and chatting time. How cool is that little Koala?
A familiar face from the Patchwork Group, Denise is also a Lace maker, here with some tatting for the handkerchief edging.
There are two ways of making tatted lace, the earliest is using a tatting shuttle and later the tatting needle came into use. Both methods make beautiful lace as you can see.

Another two talented ladies from the Lace makers-Tapestry Group, Vi showing just how simple it is to create a Tapestry, or as someone who shall remain nameless said ' an upholstery', boy talk about laughter and pink face.
Spinner and Weaver member Olive, another talented lady who came along to demonstrate her crochet skills and enjoy a good goss with friends and visitors alike. The wool in her beautifully coloured shawl was just soooo soo soft, divine.
We have so many members in the Craft Cottage, spread over the 13 groups, and Judith is a member of 3 of them, Silversmiths, Pottery and Fabric Artists, today, she was demonstrating her Silversmithing skills.
Silversmith leader, Irene, busily tapping, hammering, moulding, a piece of silver into shape and style. Irene has been a guiding force in the Cottage for many years and is just one of the talented people who give so freely of their time to keep the various groups vibrant and successful.
Fabric Art leader, Lyn and relative newbie to the group Sandrine getting stuck into felting. The machine to Sandine's left is a felting machine, although she is using a felting stick.- I know, probably not a stick, but heck, what else would a novice call it??

Sandrine also has a blog and you can read all about her exploits at
www.histoiredesoie.blogspot.com/
or pop on over to her etsy shop to view or buy one of her cunning hats.

Calligraphy member Helen was happy - with a little encouragement from her friends - to pose with some of her work, she had many items on display but this folding card just got the juices flowing, o.k., with apologies, its not a folding card, it has a name, but its getting late and people are saying are your coming??, we are due there soon...........
MMM Art Group member, Pauline was busily creating this lovely work of art, but was happy to stop work and show off her ...........? what do painters call their works in progress? a WIP like quilters do??, well, to me its a WIP with a future..........it will be stunning Pauline.
Pam and Cherie, just two of the folks who help to hold the day together, the various teams of ladies and gents who man the sales table. Happy to take your cash or your credit card.
And as we left, a quick shot of the folks enjoying their morning cuppa, made possible by Marilyn and her band of helpers in the kitchen.
