Vegan At The Lenape Pow Wow In Prospect Park

Last weekend the Lenape tribe held its first pow wow in Brooklyn in over 50 years. I only saw a small portion of the event, but it was incredibly powerful. And just like after I went to the Bam Africa festival, I felt grateful that I live in such an incredible place. In addition to the indigenous dancing and crafts, there were a couple of food vendors set up as well. Iroquois Eatery was one of them, advertising a vegan version of their “native taco.” This was a fresh piece of fry bread, covered in refried beans, salsa, and some lettuce and tomato. The fry bread was the real star of the show, thick and hearty without being too heavy, slightly sweet and really delicious. It was too much food for me to finish, but I did wash it down with a cup of traditional strawberry drink – macerated strawberries shaken up with some sugar water and ice. Hopefully they have another pow wow next year, it was an incredibly powerful event to witness.

Starving Vegan In Marine Park

After a morning of birding at the Marine Park Salt Marsh I stopped by Starving Vegan for lunch. I got a medium “dinner”, which includes one main and three sides. The curry chick’n was good, as was the peans and rice. But the other sides – okra & callaloo, and green beans with carrots — were well cooked by under-seasoned. A little sprinkle of salt helped quite a bit. My passionfruit-guava juice was the perfect drink to wash it all down with.

Vegan At Le Paddock

Le Paddock has been serving up French-ish food in Windsor Terrace for a while now. I had been there a few times over the years, but once I stopped eating dairy I didn’t really think much about it. I used to enjoy their thin-crust pizzas, but they had to retire their pizza oven a few years ago. With a visiting relative in town my wife asked me about eating at Le Paddock again, and I was surprised to see a vegan entree on their new, streamlined menu. The cauliflower steak is simply roasted, and served atop a pile of carrot-tahini mash and drizzled with a flavorful chimichurri sauce. Not particularly French, but surely delicious.

Vegan Jamaican At Verdure In Canarsie

After visiting Canarsie Park for the first time I went straight to Verdure. A vegan Jamaican restaurant on the outskirts of Canarsie, Verdure has a large steam table from which you can build your own plate, as well as a large selection of patties and some desserts. I got rice & peas (very good), pumpkin curry (very flavorful), steamed greens (fine), and ecovitch mushrooms (incredible). The mushrooms were battered and fried until crispy, then tossed with pickled onions and carrots for a punchy burst of flavor in every bite. I also got a slice of carrot cake to bring home with me, made with lots of coconut and pineapple.
