QGIS is an open source desktop GIS application which is free to download and use.

In May 2019, the UK Data Service ran a workshop providing an introduction to Geographic Data Visualisation. This included using the QGIS desktop GIS application to create choropleth maps and cartograms from census data downloaded from the UK Data Service. The UK Data service Event Page includes downloads of the materials that were used during the workshop.
