Computer stuff in Long Beach

Got up this morning and had coffee and showered and dressed. [personal profile] mashfanficchick got up after me and we left for zer eye doctor appointment in Long Beach. We took the subway to Jamaica and the LIRR from there.

While we were in the waiting room, there was an adorable almost-toddler 9 month old baby girl with her mother and we had a lot of fun watching her and talking to the mother.

After zer appointment was over we had time before my HP computer call back was supposed to happen, so we got lunch at a poke and ramen place. I had a poke bowl an ze had ramen.

We went to the library and enquired about a private room but that was unavailable. The library was so quiet that we felt it would be wrong to do the call back there, so we went to Starbucks. We staked out a table and set up, only to discover I'd not heard my phone ring and missed the callback.

I called HP and got someone, and they looked up my case and we got back to work again only to be stymied by the need for a flash drive.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick went out in search of one, and eventually found one bigger than we needed and quite expensive. I called HP back, an after we argued with an AI for some time, got through to a human. We started trying to do a system reset, and couldn't. first because there wasn't enough room in the computer, and then when we tried a different method, it kept crashing. So we broke for the day, next call back is Thursday at 2:00.

So we left Starbucks, having only bought one vente iced lavender latte, which we shared, because I needed to buy something to get the restroom code.

We went to Stop and Shoop across the street, and did some shopping. I got a loaf of Irish soda bread. Then we went to the train station and missed the train by about 2 minutes.

SO since the next one didn't leave for quite some time, and it was late, we had dinner at an Italian restaurant. I had a mushroom risotto. It was delicious.

Then we got the train back to Jamaica and then the 44 bus from there. Ze got off at Union Tpk and took the 46 from there, I went back to my stop and came home.

I found a Funko Pop waiting for me, and at first hope soared that it was one or the other of the Stephen Colberts. But it wasn't, it was the derpy tiger from K-Pop Demon Hunters that I had ordered. I didn't even know it had shipped.

I fed the pets, then Teamed the FWiB from my phone. We talked for about an hour, then got off.

I moved the boxes of the Kid's stuff from the kitchen to the hall, in preparation for RK taking them and me to the storage unit tomorrow.

Then I set up the computer and started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Gorgeous weather.

3. Cute little girl.

4. Good lunch and dinner.

5. The boxes were easier to move than I expected.

6. RK.

Seed Starting

Finally started some seeds this past weekend! A little later than I intended, but given that last year I started them a whole 2 months sooner than I ought to have, I'll take it as a win. More seeds than I had realized need to be stratified first, so those are now chilling in the fridge and I'll get them in pots next month instead.

I'm hoping this week it'll be warm enough out that I can get some compost into the garden so it's all prepped when plants are ready to go in. We've already had crocuses and daffodils up for a few weeks, but we also had a frost this morning, so it's still a little early for most things. Unpredictable March! I've got big plans for some of the space this year, but we'll see how much I actually manage to get done. So far I'm mostly working on clearing out the cabinets so I have space for harvests later in the season. I made some tincture blends on Saturday to consolidate some jars, and used up some oils for salve yesterday. I'll have to spend a lot of time over the next couple of months drinking tea to work through my stash of dried herbs. There are worse fates!

The community garden has gotten started too, and I spent some time there today weeding and clearing out dead plants. I took an extra parsley and some stray borage home with me. I've never gotten borage to take in my garden, but I've tried putting it in a different location this time and maybe it'll settle in.

I guess I cannot do the necessary suspension of disbelief/price of admission be in Workplace Fandoms anymore because what I've osmosised of The Pitt Season 2 is a lot of "should characters X, Y, and Z forgive Character A who was abusive and also stole patient medications and -- this part I'm unclear on but it sounds likely -- also practiced medicine in an ER while under the influence? It's very important question on if his apologies were good enough or if people should forgive him or be his friend again" and I'm like "that person should be fired from the hospital, this is not a buddy sitcom where they're all over at each other's apartments and dating each other and their warm opinions of each other matter, this is an emergency room, they are coworkers in a high-pressure high-stakes environment, not friends, he should be fired and they should never see him again and get to decide if they want to invite him to their bookclubs or poker nights or whatever, but the question of 'should they forgive him, has he done enough' is irrelevant because he should lose his medical license."

Finished Strange Houses and then went to the internet to find out what I just read. Internet was mostly reddit, whose black-out spoiler redactions do not appear when highlighted. But a lot of people had the same suspicions as I about the architect jumping at once to 'murderous child killer cult' while other people noted that that's just the way Japanese horror rolls. Which, fair enough. And also noted that what's important is once again the things not said, sigh. But the general impression was that everyone but the narrator and the architect are lying and what's actually happening is a conspiracy, yes, but not the one we think. Although people did seem to think the weird cult thing was true, which to me is, ok, if you say so. Do not think I'll be reading more of his work.

I know better than to go for a blood draw on a Monday especially a Monday when I've just lost an hour of sleep, but it's going to rain all week and then snow. So out I went at 10 new time and came in to a posted 45 minute wait. But I waited, and then waited some more when they called my name because they said the room available was too narrow for me. Told them I could walk without the rollator but they were all No no just wait. And when they called me again I went without my walker just to show them. But the nurse got my vein first try,  no having to use the other arm as in December, which is either her being more skilled than the other or my veins being pumped up from my water drinking. Whichever, I am grateful.

Could have done without the two large guys who barged into the elevator before I could get off it as I was leaving. Men, said Jessica. And am now headachy and am going out to dinner with bro and s-i-l tonight, but again, nobody made me get my draw this morning.

I love a routine

Mar. 9th, 2026 11:25 am
hrj: (Default)
[personal profile] hrj
I sometimes say that I live and die by routines. If I have a routine for doing something, then it gets done. If I don't have a routine (or I depart from one) then anything could happen. This means there are things I do more often than I need to (like checking blood pressure or recording weight) because if I don't fit them into a daily routine, I don't get around to it. But it means that things that need a less frequent routine are sometimes tricky (like theoretically once-a-month housekeeping tasks, such as cleaning the cat waterer).

The daily bike-coffeeshop-write-bike routine is solid (even though there are two days when it's coffeeshop-write-gym instead), but if I need to do something substantial before biking--especially if it involves putting on normal clothes--then it's hard for me to shift myself back to it later in the day.

So on a day like today when I started off with an online podcast interview to record, I probably won't get the bike out. Knowing that, I plan to do yardwork and housecleaning. But there's always the temptation to say, "I make my own rules; I could just take a day off." Except I bought some Alpine strawberry sets a few days ago and they really need to get in the ground...

For Poetry Monday:

She Says, Being Forbidden:, Leonora Speyer

And was there not a king somewhere who said:
“Back, waves! I do command you!” I forget
His name, beloved, or his race, and yet
I know the story and am comforted.
The tides will rise, are rising—see, they spread
About your robes, your ermine will be wet,
Your velvet shoes, your dear dear feet! Ah let
Me warn you, sir, the waves will reach your head!

My king, my kingly love, how shall we stay
The bold broad lifting of this lovely sea?
What is the master word that we must say
To bring these roaring waters to the knee?
The other king went scampering away!
Will you so do? Or will you drown with me?

Hat-tip to [personal profile] conuly. Ah, Cnut, we hardly recall ye. This is from Speyer’s 1926 collection Fiddler’s Farewell, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

stercoration (stir-koh-RAY-shuhn) - (obs.) n., the act of manuring (ground) with dung.

That is, fertilizing with shit. Dates to 1605 and generally rare, but odd enough it still shows up every so often -- taken from Latin stercoratio, from stercorare, which meant both to add manure and to clean manure out (of e.g. a horse's stall).

The List of Shame

People frequently ask us about whether their specific US state is trying to enact a social media age verification law so they can call their state representatives and yell at them about it! I have had "build a system that will let me easily update this without having to do so manually, categorizing these bills by status, what problems they have, and what we'd do about them if they pass" on my want-to-do list for a really long time, but until I can, here's the current list of bills I know about.

This (very long, sigh) list is accurate to the best of my knowledge as of 8 March 2026, but it may not include every bill that's been introduced in every state. (I've used a few different lists plus my own "searching until I got too depressed to continue" to assemble it, excluding laws I think have absolutely no chance of passing but including laws where I think there's still even a slight chance.) If you know of one that isn't on the list, please let me know in the comments!

These are state laws only. I'm concentrating on those because you can find lists of bad federal bills more easily, but all the lists of state bills I know of are industry-gated or limited-distribution. If you don't have a preferred source for finding out about bad federal legislation about the internet, Bad Internet Bills (from Fight for the Future) and the EFF Action Center are a great place to start!

This list is only counting social media bills; I am not including bills that don't apply to us because they're modeled on the app store/OS age signal model legislation or bills that deal with age verification for other services like chatbots or "AI companions", because I'd go completely off the rails and resort to just screaming incoherently when the list passed a hundred items. I will try to update this at least quarterly, or whenever the Magic 8 Ball says there's a rapidly moving bill that you need to yell at people about.
