Themis

  I mentioned I'd given a sculpture to my ex-daughter-in-law last week. So I did find a photo of the sculpture of Themis, the daughter of Gaia, who judges things against natural law.

It is such an important thing to think about...how our destructive culture has done so much that goes in the face of natural laws. Drilling for oil. Mining for minerals. Polluting rivers. Building without any ecological restraints. 

She's about 9 inches high.

Dragon Girl Bird

 She (they) finally got finished, just in time to go to Shelby for the Art Show which will be up until March.  Of course by the time you read this, we either will have gotten to Shelby in the rain, or maybe drowned in our efforts to get there. (Rain almost continual on Thurs.)

 Drying on the kiln shelf so it wouldn't have to be moved from a batt to the kiln.

The kiln was too hot when I stopped by on Friday, to open and remove...but I did see them. I hope there aren't any cracks. Those wings made all my friends in the studio raise their eyebrows, being concerned that pieces of slab with that much extension were very likely to crack. Me too!

And here it is...before I moved it to my shelf, where a bit of the top of her hair broke off. I think it's fixable after the glaze firing with a tiny spot of glue.

The whole problem is, that big a body would never fly with those flimsy wings.  Where's your aerodynamics brain today?

One of the beautiful bronze statues outside the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in downtown St. Petersburg FL. That's the family of the Raymond James financial planning company, and the Tampa FL football stadium as well.  The collection of one couple of the James family is exhibited in this museum.

I forgot to ask this handsome gentleman his name before leaning on his shoulder...who do you think it is?

My son, Marty Heym, and Barbara were considering where to start on the 2nd floor.

I shared a lot of Native American art while I visited Santa Fe NM last summer. Here is the link to one of the first blogs about the Wheelwright Museum. You can look at a lot more jewelry, sculptures and original art by Native Americans in those posts. But this museum also had more than I expected!

Pottery and sculpture etc at Wheelwright Museum

A sweet sculpture on the landing of the staircase going downstairs to the "Trading Post" i.e. Museum Store.  Oh but what treasures they had!

I first discovered Maria Martinez' works of black on black, from San Isledefonso Pueblo, in the 1970s.

The above works are all priced for sale, in the gift shop, er Trading Post, at the Wheelwright Museum.

I'm pretty sure this was just for decoration, but then again...

Kachina Dolls

In a hallway by the elevator, I found this ancient style loom.

These humorous animals reminded me of my dragons...

It was a bit early for lunch, but the bakery/cafe area off the patio between 2 museums on Museum Hill provided a plug for my phone to recharge, and a cuppa coffee and a pastry.

The decorated cow reminded me of one I saw at the art museum in Raleigh NC
