California's Landfill Methane Rule (LMR)

For the first time in 15 years, California air regulators are considering updates to the states Landfill Methane Rule, which sets standards for how landfills control harmful pollution. These new standards are a step in the right direction, but they don't go nearly far enough:

  1. Transparency Now – Decision-makers must require all landfill data to be made public and easy to find online, so nearby community members don’t have to dig for answers.

  2. Real Monitoring, Real Time – Landfills should report emissions daily, not quarterly, with fenceline monitors so communities see what they’re breathing.

  3. Stronger Fire Protections – Lower the underground heat maximum thresholds to 110–120°F (not 131+), to catch landfill fires early before disaster strikes.

  4. Best Technology, No Excuses – Use state-of-the-art monitoring tools (including continuous sensors, drones, and enhanced walking surveys) — not outdated or ineffective methods. Require the strongest tools to detect leaks and fires.  Existing data collection methods don’t go far enough.  Landfills must be required to use all the tools available.

  5. Immediate Community Alerts – When problems are detected (fires, leaks, high gas levels), neighbors and CARB must be notified right away, not weeks or months later.

What Can We Do To Help?
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is currently considering new rules for how landfills control air and water pollution, and they need to hear from us before November 9! Will you take a moment to share why strong landfill emission standards are important to you? We'll make sure your comment is submitted directly to CARB.

Remember, you don't need any specific expertise or knowledge of landfill practices to make your voice heard. If you're a California resident who cares about protecting our community and the environment, you're more than qualified to comment!
