The Foster Daughter by Laura Wolfe / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

It’s the middle of the night when I’m woken by urgent knocking. As I open the door, my heart stops when I recognize a face I never thought I’d see again: my foster daughter. Why has she come back here?

When Riley disappeared as a teenager, it shook my sleepy hometown to the core. It ruined my life and I was never allowed to foster a child again. Now fifteen years later, she’s on my doorstep. Why is she back?

“Please help us, we have nowhere else to go,” Riley begs. She holds the hand of a small boy. As I look down, I see the unmistakable deep blue pools of her eyes mirrored in his own. I get the sudden sense there is something she isn’t telling me…

As I let them into my home, I can’t shake the feeling that Riley is hiding something. Then the day after she is seen arguing with one of her old friends, the same person is found dead.

Could Riley have had anything to do with this?

I start to wonder whether something happened when she was a teenager. Something that she has come back to make right. An icy fear settles inside of me.

Why has my foster daughter really returned? What secrets are about to be revealed—and how many people will have to die before they come to light?

Review

As soon as you open the book, you dive straight into the action. I had the feeling I was going to enjoy this book a lot.

And I did indeed. There is a lot of speculation and finger pointing. Lies are being found out and vicious secrets are floating to the surface. Friendships are being rekindled and new ones are being formed. Pasts are being left behind and the foundation for a new life is being laid.

The question is though : can you really leave the past behind?

I loved the surprises the author had in store. When a story is well build and things I did not expect to happen, happen, this really puts a smile on my face. But I am in awe too. I admire the way the author manages to glue me to the book with amazing storytelling.

Sleep is so overrated when you are immersed in an excellent story like this one. 5 stars

Thank you

The Lake House by Laura Wolfe / #Review @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

I thought of the long history with my friends-the lies, the slights, the betrayals, and the five-year gap since our last get-together. Five of us had arrived at this desolate cabin. Now, only three of us remained.

It was supposed to be the perfect vacation: a secluded cabin by a private lake; late nights, wine and laughter. Megan hasn’t had time for herself since her second child was born, and she knows her friends need a break too-Jenna from her demanding job, Charlotte from marital problems and Kaitlyn and Sam from busy families. Between all their commitments Megan was afraid this trip would never happen, and she needs the comfort and familiarity of her oldest friends now more than ever.

They have known each other since college-there are no secrets between them.

But things change in the woods. As they reminisce, bad memories as well as good are dragged up, and old wounds are reopened. It seems not everyone remembers those college years as fondly as Megan, and a trip planned to bring them back together might just drive them apart for good.

Someone has been hiding a lie for over twenty years. And now lives are in danger.

Review

In their first year of college, coincidence brought these 5 girls together and they clicked immediately. They went through thick and thin and remained friends afterwards. Is there a better way to celebrate this fact and to be able to reminisce than to spend a long weekend together? Of course not and when they find a beautiful cabin in the woods online, the reservation is swiftly made.

Everything is perfect until they arrive…

Friends can be as thick as thieves for the onlooker, but when you scratch away the silver surface, it seems like you have opened a can of worms. And those worms are ready to crawl out of their hiding place. The question is who will get away with it? Maybe there is a fish waiting to eliminate them…

People can take a lot, but when too much is too much, they break and that’s when hell breaks loose.

The story is great and the setting makes it all a lot more suspenseful and creepy. I really had no idea about the what, why or who and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. 5 stars

Prom Queen by Laura Wolfe / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

Twenty years ago, someone murdered my best friend the night she was crowned prom queen. Now I’m finally going to prove it…After Bailey died, I fled our small lakeside hometown and never returned. But now I’m forced back here and I can’t avoid the constant whispers about our prom night, the suspicious looks of the people I grew up with. Then I bump into a woman in a coffee shop and my eyes are drawn to the silver locket around her neck, glinting in the sunlight. My blood runs cold. I know it’s Bailey’s—she never took it off. And it’s been missing since the night she died. The shock of seeing it again jolts me back to that terrible night: Bailey under the glittering lights, blowing kisses to a crowd glaring furiously back at her. Bailey wasn’t supposed to be prom queen—and someone made her pay for it.Officially her death was ruled a tragic accident, but I knew better. I’ve never seen this woman before, so why does she have my best friend’s necklace? There has to be a reason, and this time I’ll stop at nothing to find out what really happened to Bailey the night she died.Everyone in this town has secrets. But as I edge closer to the truth, I’m afraid of what lengths they’ll go to protect them…

Review

Prom night is something that we have in Belgium too, but the election of prom queen and king is not a custom here. Maybe that’s not a bad thing because it can lead to a lot of nasty things like jealousy and fights.

This book was great. I loved travelling back and forth between the past and the present while the story unraveled. A secret that had been kept for 20 years was finally being ripped apart and each morsel studied under the microscope.

Friends… is a strange word. They can be friendly in your face, but are hey genuine? Would they throw you under the bus if they could benefit from it? Can you trust them or are they just pretending?

Sometimes the baddies are the obvious choice. Sometimes it are those you least expect.  In the end it ain’t over until it’s over…

A lot of different scenarios ran through my mind and I did not know which one I had to believe to be true. And how a love a twist that comes out of nowhere like a lightening bolt through a clear blue sky

An excellent book that kept me guessing until the end. 5 stars

The In-Laws by Laura Wolfe / #Spotlight #PublicationDay @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

I peered over the ledge with my heart in my throat. A pop of color caught my eye – I would recognize that jacket anywhere. The body I knew so well lay still, torso twisted one way, head facing the other…

I’d planned this trip to the gorgeous, remote Michigan woodlands as a last-ditch attempt to help strengthen Pete and our families’ bond before the wedding of our dreams. Instead, it has turned into a nightmare that I can’t seem to wake up from. Anger, resentment, and heated arguments weren’t at all what Pete and I had imagined, even less so the horror of discovering a dead body…

Looking around the campsite at my terrified family and future in-laws, I realize that someone on this trip has been keeping secrets from me. What could be dangerous enough to kill for? But then again, I also have secrets of my own, something that if known, could be deadly. The only thing I know for certain is that the murderer is ruthless enough to do anything to keep their story hidden.

Who will be next to pay the ultimate price?

The Girl Before Me by Laura Wolfe / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

***

I switched on the bedroom light, casting a glow across the apartment. No one was there. But then the locks on my front door caught my eye. I thought I’d locked them both, but now one was open…When I moved into the apartment with my little daughter Lily, it was meant to be a new beginning for us. Now we are right in the heart of downtown, in a building with its own doorman. For the first time in a long time we are safe, away from my ex-husband.But just as we settle into our new lives a letter arrives for someone called Annie. The neighbors tell me to ignore it. She’s just the woman who lived here before me, who moved out one day without a word.Curious, I open it anyway and am shocked by what I read. It says Annie wasn’t safe. It said she needed to get out. Now, I can’t escape the idea that someone is watching us. I feel I can’t trust my neighbors. And I can’t help but think… Something happened to Annie. Something bad. And Lily and I are not nearly as safe here as I thought we were…

Review

I remember when I was younger we had a basement and it was divided in different rooms. We kept some supplies down there and sometimes my mom asked me to go and pick something up. That was the core I hated the most. There were a lot of dark corners and I always thought someone would be lurking in there.

I guess, that more than once, I broke the world record running up and down. 😊

I totally felt how Rachel felt when she had to go there.

The prologue of the book hit bull’s eye straight away and set the pace for the rest of the book.

I really had no idea who I could trust and Rachel had the same problem. She was constantly between, a rock and a hard place. When she put her trust in some people, she started doubting her decision a bit later because she found things out that were carefully trying to keep hidden. But you know how it goes when you lie… Sooner or later the truth comes out and we sometimes cannot understand how we could have misjudged some people so badly.

I loved the storytelling; I loved the characters. There is one thing I need to say to one of them. ‘Really, Rachel’s mother? You so not deserve that title!’

Great book. 5 stars

We Live Next Door by Laura Wolfe / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

***

You think you know the people next door… What if they know you better?I always dreamed of moving back home to Ridgeview Pines, with its white fences and sloping lawns. I wish it had happened under different circumstances, but now I’m here I feel safe and ready for a fresh start with my little family. The first thing I do every morning is pick up my phone and check The Neighbor List—our local message board. Maybe the people next door know a little too much about where their neighbors are and what they’re doing, but it’s safer that way, isn’t it? And my husband—he wouldn’t dare sneak behind my back with so many eyes watching.Just when I’m beginning to relax, a woman I’ve known since I was small is found dead on the white tiles of her bathroom floor. I watch messages of condolence flood my screen. No one else suspects a thing. But I know that among all these friendly people, watching out for one another, someone knows more than they’re sharing. And I wonder—how far back do they remember, and who’s next?

Review

‘We live next door’… This means you often only live a few meters from the people in the house next or in front of yours, but what do you know about them?

Not very much. You only know what they want to reveal and often you conclude things on what you see, but do you ever know someone really? Even the people you have known for years or live under the same roof often manage to surprise you after all this time. Some are pleasant revelations, others not so much.

Then of course there are the nosy ones and aren’t we lucky sometimes they are the way they are? They see, hear everything or want to delve into something until they know every last detail. Believe it or not they bring justice or force the police to dig deeper too.

Jess is like a dog with a bone and isn’t easily scared away. When it seems like her world is tumbling down and the danger is creeping closer to home, she is like a lioness. She fights with all she has in her. It seems like she is losing the battle until someone arrives to fight her corner…

The more I read, the more I got immersed in the story. It started like a soft breeze, but soon I found myself in a storm. I had not one single inkling what to expect, but I most certainly did not expect this ending. It was brilliant. 5 stars

Review

You are responsible for your own actions. That’s an indisputable fact, but sometimes other people can drive you insane and that’s when the bomb goes off. You see red and nothing can stop you with all that this implies…

There were a lot of suspects here, but no one really stood out. That made it rather complicated for me to put the blame on someone. There was not one person that I disliked so much that I would happily see them behind bars, but someone must have done it.

When all the masks fell off, I was utterly surprised by the outcome. Not once did that person’s name cross my mind. This shows the author’s skills of being able to fool her readers or me at least 😉.

People gossip. People come to conclusions they believe are the right ones. People are cruel. Nothing new there, right? But these are very good elements to use in a book and build a story around. 4 stars.

Two Widows by Laura Wolfe / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

The body of an unidentified woman has been found on a local beach in a small town. The police have no suspects.

Gloria is used to solitude. Widowed and still grieving her late husband, she spends her days with only her faded photographs for company. But when a young woman is murdered nearby, Gloria grows anxious. Living alone in an old farmhouse, surrounded by empty woods, there’s no one for miles who would hear her scream.

When freelance travel writer Beth arrives with her trailer to live on Gloria’s land, Gloria is relieved not to be alone. The police have no suspects in the murder and fearless Beth makes Gloria feel safe. Then Gloria discovers Beth is a widow too: the women become closer and begin to share their secrets.

But soon Gloria starts to wonder… what does she actually know about Beth? About what brought her to this isolated spot? About how her husband really died? Is it a coincidence that she’s arrived just as this small town has seen its first murder in decades?

Gloria thought that Beth had told her all her secrets. She was wrong.

Review

This was a great read! Sometimes I have to force myself a bit to continue reading but with this one: no way I had to do that! I flew through it like I was on a TGV.

It was a very fascinating book. The story is seen through the eyes of the two widows who each have a very different life and background. From the very start there was a suspenseful atmosphere and you don’t really know who to trust or what the connection is with the beginning of the book.

Little by little everything is revealed and I closed the book with a very happy feeling. Not because of what happened of course but because of the way the story was structured and written.

This book is about what betrayal can lead to and so much more. 5 stars.
