Even time travel can’t unravel love

Time-travel is a way for writers to play with history and imagine different futures – for better, or worse.

When romance is thrown into the mix, time-travel becomes a passionate tool, or heart-breaking weapon. A time agent in the 22nd century puts their whole mission at risk when they fall in love with the wrong person. No matter which part of history a man visits, he cannot not escape his ex. A woman is desperately in love with the time-space continuum, but it doesn’t love her back. As time passes and falls apart, a time-traveller must say goodbye to their soulmate.

With stories from best-selling and award-winning authors such as Seanan McGuire, Alix E. Harrow and Nina Allan, this anthology gives a taste for the rich treasure trove of stories we can imagine with love, loss and reunion across time and space.

Edited by Jonathan Strahan and including stories by: Alix E. Harrow, Zen Cho, Seanan McGuire, Sarah Gailey, Jeffrey Ford, Nina Allan, Elizabeth Hand, Lavanya Lakshminarayan, Catherynne M. Valente, Sam J. Miller, Rowan Coleman, Margo Lanagan, Sameem Siddiqui, Theodora Goss, Carrie Vaughn, Ellen Klages

Top 5

Five books for someone who has recently fallen into the possession of a time machine! So, you have a time machine and you don’t know what to do with it? Where should you go? What should you see? What might happen? Some great storytellers have been answering these questions for a long, long time. Here are five books that were on my mind when I was putting Someone in Time together that you might love too!

5. The Time Traveller’s Almanac, Ann VanderMeer &Jeff VandeerMeer eds. (2013)

A lot of the best time travel stories are short. The first I remember clearly is Heinlein’s “By His Bootstraps”. These stories play out a single idea or a notion and then are done. And many of them, some of the very best, are in this definitive time travel anthology. Ann VanderMeer and Jeff VanderMeer edited a series of enormous anthologies expanding and reconsidering speculative fiction during the 2010s, starting with The Weird, and continuing with this book, The Time Traveller’s Almanac. It is the definitive collection of time travel stories, bringing together almost a century’s worth of work, from E.F. Benson’s 1922 tale “In the Tube” to Edward Page Mitchell “The Clock That Went Backward”. There are so many of my favourite stories here that I couldn’t recommend just a handful.

4. The Eyre Affair, Jasper Fforde (2001)

Jasper Fforde worked in film before he became a novelist. The Eyre Affair, the first of his novels to feature his time and story traveling literary detective, Thursday Next, reflects that, being an admirably efficient and linear story that is constantly engaging. It’s always been my favourite of his books, and it t features time travel, cloning, pet dodos, and involves a mastermind kidnapping characters, including Jane Eyre, from Brontë novels. A total delight on every page.

3. Kindred, Octavia E. Butler (1979)

I don’t think Octavia E. Butler ever got the audience she deserved during her lifetime, but her dozen or so novels are among some of the most essential science fiction of our time. While I adored Adutlhood Rites, her major works may be her unfinished Parable series, and this book of time travel, slavery, and the Civil War. This is intense stuff, with a young Black writer thrust back in time to pre-Civil War Maryland plantation, and then moving forward through time. Possibly the most challenging book here, but also the most rewarding.

2. Doomsday Book, Connie Willis (1992)

Doomsday Book seemed to annoy more of my English friends than almost any other book I can think of, while my American friends almost universally loved it. A time traveller from Oxford goes back in time and is stuck there (this happens a lot with time travel stories) in the time of the original Doomsday Book. My English friends who don’t like this book don’t like it mostly because some historical and geographical details may be wrong, but it’s a compulsive page-turner of a book that is rich, romantic, and compelling. And it won a heap of awards.

1. The Anubis Gates, Tim Powers (1983)

To be totally honest, this is one of my favourite books of almost any kind, and is here for that reason as much as any. I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to the time travel element when I first read it, and it’s still not the most impressive part of the book. The Anubis Gates is a totally magical romp of a book where a millionaire finds magical gates that let him travel back in time to attend a lecture by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1810. The trip goes wrong and he may be trapped in the past! It’s from a time when everything Powers wrote seemed effortless and magical and it’s utterly beguiling.

And a bonus. Someone in Time: Tales of Time-Crossed Romance only exists because of two short novels – Passing Strange by Ellen Klages and Time Was by Ian McDonald. One is the story of an pulp fiction artist in San Francisco in the 1940s and the other is the story of two men blasted apart by a military experiment gone awry, and falling through time in search of one another. I love them both and thing you will too.

Thank you

THE NEEDLE CAN MEND

by Eliza Redgold

One of the most famous relics of the 11th century is the Bayeux Tapestry. It is called a tapestry, but in fact it is an embroidery. It is nearly 70 metres (230ft) long, and 50 centimetres (20in) in height, and comprises of fifty scenes stitched on linen with coloured woollen yarns. It is kept, now, in a museum near Bayeux Cathedral in Normandy, where Odo, Duke William’s half-brother, was bishop. Some say it was Odo who commanded the Tapestry made, perhaps it was, perhaps it wasn’t. We don’t know. At initial glance it seems to tell a straightforward story of the events that led to the Norman Conquest, and the Battle itself. But there is so much we do not understand: why the little figures in the upper and lower borders? Who were the few people named – Turold, the dwarf, and the woman, Alfgyva? Annoyingly, the makers did not include explanatory footnotes. The Tapestry is a beautiful thing, even today its colours are bright and vibrant. It has survived wars and fires, and the skill that went into making it is as wondrous to us now, as it must have been back then, at some time soon after October 1066. The women who stitched it – for there was more than one hand responsible for its creation – put more than just thread into those scenes. There is sadness, loyalty, and love stitched there. But who designed it? Whose was the mind behind the Tapestry’s creation…?

A ghost of wind. A breath of air. That’s what changed our course. Or rather, William’s course, for his ships were stranded for months, unable to attack England’s shores.

Some said it was the work of vengeful spirits, some said it was the hand of God.

Harold waited for William on a coastal isle, ready to repel the Norman forces.

But the ghost lingered too long. Harold ran out of provisions and abandoned his defence.

The wind changed. The Normans attacked. Our lives unravelled.

‘No!’ I sobbed as I clung to him. ‘I won’t leave you!’

‘Elf.’ He stroked my face as the tears streamed down.

‘Let me stay with you. Let me fight beside you. I can’t leave you. I won’t.’

‘You’re with child,’ he said gently. ‘You must be protected. How can I fight this battle if you are not safe?’

Still my tears flowed. I sobbed, shrieked, I who was usually so strong. It was as if all restraint had left me. All that was left was fear.

‘No. No.’

He held me by the forearms. His eyes, fierce with love. ‘Edith. My Elf. I beg you. Go to sanctuary with the other women of the court. Go now.’

He fell in battle. I knew it before I reached the safety of the convent walls. I knew it before we said good-bye. As if I had always known it. As if our every embrace had been farewell.

* * *

The colours were so bright they hurt my eyes.

Blue. Like the sky on the day we wed.

Yellow. Like the korn fields of Coventry. Like my grandmother’s hair.

Green. Like the leaves in the wildwoods of Arden, where I played as a child.

Grey. Like the stones of the convent walls.

Red. I shuddered as I folded out the linen, white as a shroud, and picked up the first length of wool.

I would start with red.

Thank you, Eliza Redgold and The Coffee Pot Book Club

About the Authors

1066 Turned Upside Down is a collection of eleven alternative history short stories of a ‘what if’ nature imagined by nine well-known successful authors:

JOANNA COURTNEY Ever since Joanna sat up in her cot with a book, she’d wanted to be a writer and cut her publication teeth on short stories and serials for the women’s magazines before signing to PanMacmillan in 2014 for her three-book series The Queens of the Con-quest about the wives of the men fighting to be King of England in 1066. Her second series, written for Piatkus is Shakespeare’s Queens exploring the real history of three of the bard’s greatest female characters – Lady Macbeth, Ophelia and Cordelia.

Joanna’s fascination with historical writing is in finding the similarities between us and them –with an especial goal to provide a female take on some of the greatest stories we think we know. http://www.joannacourtney.com

ALISON MORTON writes the award-winning alternative fiction Roma Nova thriller series featuring tough, but compassionate heroines. She blends her deep love of Roman history with six years’ military service and a life of reading crime, historical, adventure and thriller fiction. A ‘Roman nut’ since age 11, she started wondering what a modern Roman society would be like if run by strong women. She has recently branched out into a contemporary crime setting with Double Identity, the first of a planned series.

Anna has also published The Wanderer, a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. His Castilian Hawk – returning to medieval times and her most recent re-lease, The Whirlpools of Time, a time travel romance set against the backdrop of brewing re-bellion in the Scottish highlands. Anna has won several awards including various Gold, Sil-ver and Bronze Coffee Pot Book Club awards. http://www.annabelfrage.com

Keeping it Under Wraps: Sex – Various Authors / #Extract #BookTour @lolasblogtours @underwrapsbook

Society tells us what is right and what is wrong based on unrealistic expectations. In the end, though, no matter how unique our experiences seem, they aren’t wrong: they simply are.

The Keeping It Under Wraps anthology series provides a safe space to change the narrative, to speak openly about individual experiences, and in the end to understand that while each experience is different, we are not so different from each other.

Let’s start the conversation.

What better place to start than with sex?

Sexual health, sexual preferences, and sexual experiences: no stigma, no shame, no more keeping it under wraps.

Some of the essays in this book include topics such as sexual violence, drug abuse, assault and other related
themes.
The writers of these essays come from diverse cultural and generational backgrounds. Their voices and their
views are their own.

Introduction
The idea for an anthology about sex started with a group of friends talking about their sex lives over a
drink one wintry evening. As we compared stories, it was clear that everyone felt different, or weird, because
of their feelings about and approach to sex. Over wine and friendship, the conversation deepened. We
realised that we are so brainwashed about what sex should be, what it should look like, and how it should
feel, that our realities become irrelevant. Instead of living with our own reality, we have to live with what
others say it should be. And when we live like that, we always come up short.
We decided to spread the word and see who felt comfortable sharing their personal experiences with us. It
was a big ask, finding people willing to open up about their anxieties, their traumas, their shame, and their
innermost desires. These are things we don’t talk about – but shouldn’t we?
This anthology brings together people from around the world with diverse experiences and reflections on
what sex and sexuality is for them. Very quickly, we saw that the stories were unique, and yet, the themes
were universal.
No matter our relationships or expectations, we are all looking for joy and acceptance – a way to belong not
only to our own smaller communities but also to a larger community, where who we are is normal, ok,
acceptable.
We have worth and meaning. We are enough.
Sex isn’t always pleasure. There is trauma, there is pain, there is inadequacy, there is shame, there is
indifference. As much as we have to destigmatise pleasure, we must also not be afraid of talking about how
people can inflict pain on others in the search to fulfil their own needs, fears, and expectations.
There is hope. In the saddest stories and the most traumatic experiences, sometimes the simple lesson is that
right now, in this moment, it’s ok to not be ok. That our experiences, our hopes, and understanding – well,
it’s all a bit muffled and fuzzy. Life can be shit and sex can be shit and people can be shit. That’s ok.
In the end, it’s about finding self-acceptance and love, especially from the most important person in your life:
yourself.
These stories are collected and shared, with love, by Alnaaze, Louise and Tracy. We are grateful to the
writers who were courageous enough to share their stories, whether endearing, funny, painful, or traumatic.
Thank you all for your trust.

Blockbuster Made Me Do It

by Paul O’Neill

At the bottom of our sad, gusty high street, my track-suited friends and I wasted afternoons at our local Blockbusters. Long gone now, of course, but they were all the rage back then. You could waste a lot of time in that vivid blue atmosphere. I can still taste all that plastic. Empty cassette cases (they were empty to stop us from knicking them) lined the walls from top to bottom.

A vivid memory stands in my mind of carrying the empty cases of Poltergeist 3, Child’s Play, and Toys. Toys seems to have vanished from the world, but the terrifying jack-in-the-box on its cover still haunts me.

We handed our treasures over to the dead-eyed girl behind the counter. She’d hammer at keys with her long nails and then we were good to go. Not a glance or a thought. We were not the age written in red circles on each of the films. We were barely into our double figures.

My mate’s parents had a pretty serious bootlegging operation going. The films that we’d take back would be recorded on two VCRs – one to play, the other to record. Trying to explain that to

someone in their twenties is like pulling out teeth. What? You put a tape in the top one, an empty tape in the bottom one, hit record, and you had to watch the whole film while it recorded? What a load of bother! They’ll never understand how much joy it brought.

In my mate’s house, films lined the walls in shiny black plastic. I always wondered how much damage could be done if you slammed into that wall of video tapes. How it would feel being rained on by hundreds of copied horror films.

Horror was the thing when I was growing up. You couldn’t escape its grasp. Did you see that bit when Freddy stretches out his arms? Did the version of the Exorcist you watched have that spider-walk bit? Do you know the girl in Poltergeist died? These were the talking points in lunch queues. The golden age of horror at its peak.

Huddled under a shared blanket, cans of Irn Bru and crisps being passed among us, Pennywise climbing out the drain in that shower scene, we were a cosy bunch. We laughed at who screamed in fright, making sure none of us were allowed to cover our eyes.

We didn’t know true horror lived just outside that cosy place.

Poverty. Drugs. Suicide. Six-year-olds smoking while queueing at the ice cream van. Adults queuing behind them, talking in hushed tones when they got to the front of the line, slipping their money over. It wasn’t ice cream they left with.

Last week, when catching up with an old buddy from work (Teams), they asked what scares me the most. Typical October fare, since I write mostly horror stories. The assumption is that I’m hardened to it all – must take a lot to scare you, eh? My answer? Stairs, grapes, roads – the list transformed when I became a dad.

Truth is, I’m not very hardened at all. It’s one of the reasons that horror is what pours out of me when I write. My gift for seeing the worst that can happen in each situation is what gets my nightmare juices flowing.

One of the things that terrified me as a kid was my ceiling and the demons that appeared if you didn’t blink. That fear stayed with me so much that I wrote The Swirly People, which is in the latest fear-swelling collection by Eerie River Publishing. Give it a read if you need a good scare.

The world outside is one big horror story right now. Sometimes I think the reason horror fiction doesn’t sell as well as it used to is because horror is served in person – fresh, painful and up close. Viruses, violence, discrimination, and the general deletion of human decency (seriously, how much petrol do you need, you muppet?!).

Without Blockbuster ignoring our ages and giving us our horror fix, I might not be so equipped to deal with these things.

My kids are still small and innocent. I won’t be letting them watch Hellraiser with their Weetabix before getting ready for school. At least not for a few years.

Thank you, Paul O’Neill and R&R Book tours.

Madeline Collier finds solace in charity work and fundraising for a local children’s home. Peter Townsend moves west from Philadelphia to escape his past and begin a new life. When an idea is planted for an orphan’s possible future, Madeline realizes she needs help. Can Maddie persuade Peter to commit to a marriage of convenience and, in so doing, help her give a child a forever home?

A NEW FAMILY

Eliot Graveney fought his entire life to be seen as the equal of those around him, but a flash of fire enters his world in the shape of heiress Marianne Daltrey. And Eliot’s life will never be the same. Can Eliot outsmart a wealthy man to help Marianne get her inheritance? Will he lose his heart in the process?

FOREVER FAMILY

Richard Petra still suffers from a tragic loss, but sparks fly when he finds his high school sweetheart. Can this group somehow become a forever family?

Thrust into a Santa Claus suit at the children’s hospital, Jack Gallagher is surprised to recognize the accountant from work. Can they overcome their misguided perceptions to form a lasting bond?

LONG TO BELONG

Mark Diamond has never had a family of his own, but being on the spectrum makes relationships extra complicated – until Katie Reed, owner of the Bountiful Blueberry Coffee Shop, stole his heart faster than an underpriced IPO offering. For Katie, her shy beau has been as yummy as a dandelion-cocoa latte, but can they handle each other’s situation, or will their dreams be thrown out like yesterday’s brew?

MACY’S GIFT

Macy Williams loves her career as a photojournalist, but when her brother and sister-in-law die, Macy is drawn back to her small hometown to handle their estate. Cord Adams is surprised by his deceased friend’s choice of guardian. He only met Macy once, and the meeting was anything but cordial. Can two strong-willed individuals set aside their differences for the good of two young girls?

NOT PART OF OUR EVENING PLANS

As one of the couples who found love at River’s End Ranch, Jace and Dinky Cunningham struggle with the loss of their dreams for a family; but, circumstances can shift in a split second. Dare they hope this change of plans will bring them everything their hearts desire?

Spirit of Romance: Kandie Kisses by Michele Pollock Dalton

Hope for the Heart Series – Book 1

First part of chapter 1

The packed bar along the backshore of Lake Superior was stuffed to the gills and stifling hot as Mick Polenz set up his Bose sound system. Despite the governor’s “half capacity” orders, the Down Low Bar & Grill still hosted a wall-to-wall crowd every weekend. And Mick certainly didn’t mind. The tips he earned from the gig always put him in a better frame of mind.

Although music was his first love, Mick’s job as a first responder for the township paid the bills. The area that comprised Magellan was essentially Michigan’s last outpost before the land gave way to Lake Superior, but the quaint village was a welcome change from the hectic pace of Lansing.

The atmosphere at the Down Low pulsed through the heavily timbered room and spiked Mick’s enthusiasm for his upcoming show. Still, the nerves that lingered before each performance set his foot to tapping as he waited for one of the waitresses to deliver his water bottle. “Thanks, Chel,” he commented when the harried woman handed off his beverage.

Rachel Boulton paused for a moment and gave the shy man an equally bashful smile before turning to hurry away. “Heaven’s above!” she whispered to herself, wishing she had a hand free to fan her face. One simple brush of the burly firefighter’s calloused fingertips made Rachel think of things a good girl would never admit.

Tamping down her runaway hormones, Chel pressed through the rabble rousers to greet the next group of diners. “How many?” she called above raucous laughter and the opening song of Mick’s first set.

After leading the trio of suggestively clad women toward the last table, Rachel scanned the crowded bar room adjacent to the dining area. Intrigued, the busy waitress caught a glimpse of her favorite musician on the low-slung stage.

Alone under the weak spotlight, Mick’s rich baritone belted out Waylon Jennings’ “Good ‘ole Boys” then quickly segued into Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” Always a fan favorite, wooden train whistles “tooted” in all the appropriate places while he played.

At the end of the song, he turned a lopsided, boyish grin to the boisterous group hamming it up at the front table. Self-named “Mick’s Clique,” the rowdy bunch cheered and hollered out song suggestions as the evening wore on, but the affable musician was always glad to have their support. Their energy fed his, and Mick played his heart and soul out.

When the dining room closed down several hours later, Rachel rushed through the evening clean-up, so she could get home and begin her preparations for the following morning. Run ragged between her job at the Down Low and the supplemental work she picked up by baking sweet treats for the Merry Hollow Tree Farm; the weary woman wondered how long she’d be able to keep pace.

As Chel exited the back door off the prep kitchen, she gave a perplexed glance at her vehicle. The hatch of her older SUV was aloft. “Well, what the heck?” she mused in consternation as she approached the mismatched Santa Fe. After a recent fender bender, the

predominantly black car now sported a red front quarter panel and driver’s side door. “Must have hit the button,” the buxom brunette mumbled as she pulled the key fob from the front pocket of her faded jeans.

The Tennis Church – Sophie Hannah

“I haven’t disappeared,” said the voice on the other end of the line. No hello, no introduction, nothing.

“Pardon?” said Charlie Zailer. She never normally answered the home phone. Surely nobody below the age of 70 bothered with their landline these days? Charlie had given up doing so as soon as she’d realised that it was always one of those vacuous recorded voices saying something about insurance. Also, the cord had become progressively more tangled, which meant – after about two years, during which it had come to resemble a knotted plastic cyst – that you had to lay your cheek against the gungey white plastic on the side of the phone if you wanted to be able to put the receiver to your ear.

“I haven’t disappeared,” the woman said again. The strange thing was, Charlie recognised her voice, though she could not have said from where. Maybe she was imagining it.

“This is Charlie Zailer. Did you mean to ring me, or someone else?”

“You.”

“Then you’d better tell me who you are and what you’re on about. I was hoping to be told I could get some free, no-obligation legal advice if I’ve slipped a disc on a wet pavement – no win, no fee.”

“Have you hurt your back?”

“No. That was a joke. Actually, I was hoping it would be my mother-in-law ringing to pull out of midnight mass tonight and Christmas dinner tomorrow. But enough about me!” Charlie said pointedly. If the woman didn’t identify herself now, there was something very wrong with her.

“I don’t suppose you remember me: Tasha Sisley.”

“Tasha? No way! Is it really you?”

“I don’t know,” the woman said doubtfully. “I don’t think so.”

“Actually, now that I know it’s you, I recognise your voice.”

“I’ve been Natasha Knowles for the past 15 years – a whole different person.”

From this Charlie deduced that Natasha Knowles did not die her hair black and wear too much black eyeliner, long tasseled skirts, ripped fishnet tights and Mötley Crüe T-shirts; that she did not violently rotate her head to a soundtrack of AC/DC and Faster Pussycat and Hanoi Rocks in a way that somehow made every girl at school wish they could do it as

stylishly as Tasha; that she would not lie on a dirty floor beneath the chip hatch of a nightclub, snogging a boy she’d met half an hour before and would never see again, and then go home and cry all night and write ridiculous song lyrics about him that referred to “all that we’ve been through” but did not include his name, because she didn’t know it.

Charlie wished she hadn’t picked up the phone. Tasha Sisley was a pain but she was never boring. Natasha Knowles sounded as if she could manage both quite easily.

“Look, I can’t really talk now – as I said, parents-in-law on the way, God help me – but was there something you wanted?”

“I just rang to tell you that I haven’t disappeared. That’s all.”

The line went dead.

Charlie hung up the phone. She sat and stared at it for a while, half expecting it to ring again straight away. “What the hell was that about?” she said out loud. Nobody answered.
