Reviews:

The secretary reviewed losing a tooth as quite painful - but the quality of dental care received was fantastic

Yochanan reviewed 'Dracula: a Love Tale' as a Gothic romantic horror fantasy. He found it visually stunning but it also has some really weird & distracting scenes. He found it uneven and rates it as worth matinee.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracula_(2025_French_film)
Yochanan also reviewed 'Send Help' as a thriller comedy adventure with a lot of jump-scares. He found it darkly funny & highly entertaining, rating it as worth full price.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Send_Help

Valerie reviewed the 7-book 'Dungeon Crawler Carl' series as fun & popular. She says it's Hitchhiker's Guide meets D&D & is full of wacky adventures. She finds all 7 books to be page-turners & highly recommends them.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Crawler_Carl

Lisa reviewed the latest episode of 'Starfleet Academy' as it ended on a cliff-hanger. She's all caught up on the series so far & finds it interesting. Yochanan has also been enjoying the show & considered there is good character development. Rick also enjoyed the episode but thinks they are trying to put too much in the episodes & reacts 'yay'.

Reviews

Rick = A Knight of the Seven Nine Kingdoms just finished up its season. Traditional low stakes ending for a season. Amusing bits. Doing pretty well, and looking forward to more seasons. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Knight_of_the_Seven_Kingdoms_(TV_series)
& Rick reviewed Star Trek Star Fleet Academy. Has been cycling through the cadets in recent stories. Liked that they mostly got out of the academy this week. A good time was had by him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Starfleet_Academy_(TV_series) Yochanan: Thought it was OK. A little like two B stories (and no A)
& Rick reviewed = Predator: Badlands (film) Predator series had languished for a while, but this is the second in recent times that have marked improvement. He’s about 2/3 through, and looking forward to finishing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predator:_Badlands Yochanan: Saw in cinema and liked it. Graet world-building. Lots of fun.

Yochanan = Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die (in cinemas) SF Comedy dir: Gore Verbinski with Sam Rockwell and a guy from the future. Dark humor and unique style. A bit over the top at the end. A-, more than matinee, possibly full price. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Luck%2C_Have_Fun%2C_Don't_Die
& Yochanan reviewed = Undone (Prime 2019) Two seasons of eight x 23-30’ episodes. Animated comedy series. Rotoscope style. Compelling watching, detail and world-building. Not crazy about the final episode, but over all loved the show. Highly recommends. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undone_(TV_series) Rick: Has only seen the first season, but the most effective use of rotoscope, and engaging story.
& Yochanan reviewed = Stargate Infinity (Prime 2002) animated. 1 26 episode series. Not considered cannon, where the gate is public knowledge. A group of young agents trying to clear their name. Animation sucked. Worth only if you have nothing else to do (or are a completist). (A DIC Entertainment production…) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Infinity

Deirdre = Addicted to BitCraft – a rust based proof of concept game. It’ll be relaunched later this week. bitcraftonline.com/

Reviews:

Yochanan reviewed a subtitled popular Hong Kong based movie 'Back to the Past' that does have time travel & a lot of action. He had fun, rates it a 'B+' and says it's worth matinee plus. There was some discussion on the genre, with Duncan recommending 'Back Alley Princess' from 1973

Yochanan also reviewed his 'away mission' - a trip to San Francisco on Feb 12th for a Star Trek event that included loot-bags & ran through the 16th. He considered it to be a really successful idea and he had a lot of fun and took public transportation

President: Not present, therefore nothing fannish to report.

Committees: None.

New Business: None.

Announcements:

Gerald: He and Gayle will attend RadCon in Pasco, WA (near Hanford) this coming (Presidents Day) weekend, and Gerry will have several panels. Bob Brown of B Cubed Press will be one of Publishing Guest of Honor. Duncan: 30 years ago, there was a lot of concern about radiation. Have things changed? Gerald: Other concerns are now more immediate than nuclear war, but there has always been a sense of humour about these matters at RadCon. Bob Brown, for example, was always famous for bunnies that glow in the dark. Gayle: The radioactive bunnies did appear at cons.
https://www.radcon.org/

Yochanan: Go Boldly SF observes both the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy being set in SF (RM notes: for values of "SF" approximating Sausalito). Blue & Gold Fleet will do themed cruises around the Bay between Feb. 14 and Mar. 22nd. Several stores at Pier 39 between Feb. 12th and 19th will have a promo with swag, and you'll have to cite the phrase "Live long and prosper" to qualify.
Paramount is sponsoring Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Scrap&Sip: Wed. Feb 18th, 5:30pm, 3292 22nd St, SF. "Bring your journal, and we'll offer a Starfleet Academy themed scrap pack with ephemera and stickers. RSVP required. Link in bio." It was Ethan Phillips's (Neelix's) birthday on Feb. 8th! Happy 71st, Ethan.

Reviews

Yochanan: Movie currently in cinemas: "Iron Lung", an SF/horror film, by Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach, based on a video by the same name, 2026. Has received mixed reviews, praised for its atmosphere, criticized for its slow pace. Slow but intriguing. Produced on a budget. Worth matinee, deserves to be in theatres. Popular with GenZ.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Lung_(film)
and Yochanan: Fallout season 2 just ended. 8 episodes, released weekly on Amazon Prime Video, based on the game of the same name. Post-apocalyptic series. Yochanan loved the retro-futurism, flashbacks. Worth full price. Now airing on Amazon Prime Video, 8 eps. per season. Kennita: Enjoyed it, particular scenes were clearly based directly on the video game. Rick observed that there are three interweaved story lines, that Namibia's Skeleton Coast standing in for The Wasteland was spectacular, and that Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard / The Ghoul largely carried the season. (Yochanan demurred, putting in a good word for co-lead Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean.) Kyle MacLachlan appears in a supporting role as Hank MacLean, Lucy's father.
and Yochanan: Streaming on Prime, "Stargate Origins" (variant name "Stargate Origins: Catherine"), 10 episodes, Web series, each segment about 15 minutes or less, low budget, cast included Connor Trinneer (as Pro. Paul Langford, father of Catherine Langford). 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, not well reviewed. Nonetheless, holds up well, and he considered it worth his time.

Rick: Reviewed the most recent (4th and 5th) episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as showing the strength of the production with episodes about (respectively) the Klingon and "photonic" (holographic) cadets, both carried off with panache. Yochanan: looking forward to every episode. Delightful, irreverent, broke the mold, beautiful homage to ST:DS9. These episodes were a nice but entirely implicit way to honour February being Black History Month.

Duncan: "Octopus Heart", a short film, drew him because of his appreciation for octopuses. Film is available free on the Internet (https://fawesome.tv/movies/10649135/octopus-heart). Basically has to do with empathy. Gerald: Asked clarification about spelling of the film interviewee's name "Anastazija Zivanovic". Duncan: [protracted observation about the complex relationship between spelling and nationality, including but not limited to the difference between Ukrainian and Russian names] Yochanan: What language was the film in? Duncan: I think it was in English, but it's actually unclear. It wasn't dubbed.
RM notes: This short 2024 documentary was made by Serbian-ethnic screenwriter/director Goran Zivanovic, who has been Australian since age 2. His film "examines the emotional aftermath of trauma through the lens of Takotsubo Syndrome [aka Takotsubo cardiomyopathy aka stress cardiomyopathy], also known as Broken Heart Syndrome". IMDB says it was filmed in Australia. It's in English, with Anastazija speaking with a strong Serbian accent. Runtime is just over 40 minutes.
Trailer: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x981ygc

Rick: Provided brief review of his SuperbOwl Sunday walk up Alpine Road Regional Trail, as enjoyed by a cheerful crowd enjoying perfect weather and pleasant, shaded surroundings near a bubbling stream. No owls were injured in the production of this walk.

Rumour of the Week: "Radioactive bunnies are superior to bad bunnies or bad robots."

Gerald: They also have/had a display of Jellies (and yes, still there).
Gayle: Remembers the Sand Dollars – all vertical!
Yochanan also reviewed = The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek (prime). Five years old. Originally produced for the History Channel. 11 parts. Very interesting documentary. The order seems a bit off. Most episodes go through each era of the series. Informational, entertaining, interviews. Good but not great. Not blown away. Great if you don’t know the history already. imdb.com/title/tt15766736
Yochanan also reviewed = Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary (prime) 2019 look at the making and effect of the move for its 20th anniversary. Really good, worth full price. www.imdb.com/title/tt11044122/

Rick: Wonderman (D+/Marvel Spotlight) 8 part mini-series. Don’t need to know the MCU to watch. Contemporary LA, with an actor trying out for roles. Meets Ben Kingsly’s Trevor Slattery. Small intimate character, dialogue based story. Absolutely delightful. Spoof on hollywood and superheroes. Highly recommend. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Man_(miniseries)
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (HBO) 6 part story. Before the Song of Fire and Ice. Nice to see Northern Ireland again. Keeping Irish, British and Aussie actors employed. Based upon Martin’s short stories of Dunk and Egg? So far so good. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Knight_of_the_Seven_Kingdoms_(TV_series)

Gerald: The Right Cross, thrown by US Congressperson Ilhan Omar, to assailant squirting with unknown liquid. Looked like it was done with significant velocity.

Kennita: Exploratorium. MIT-AIP Afterparty. Delightful. Didn’t go deep inside. The front part was engaging. Worth full price (and this was more expensive for this event)! At Pier 15 these days. exploratorium.edu

Yochanan announced that Artemis 2 is on the launch-pad

Reviews:

The secretary reviewed being diagnosed with & suffering from bacterial pneumonia as very much NOT worth the effort and is not recommended

Rick reviewed 'Starfleet Academy' as 'very promising', having seen the introductory episode. He finds the acting to be good, the plot serviceable and the dialogue mostly good, with an excellent villain - so far. Yochanan also commented to the topic, saying the show is 'interesting', but opines that show's musical theme meanders and does not grab him at all. Ken commented that 'Trek Culture' on YouTube is going into details about easter eggs in the show.

see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Edge_of_Sleep_(TV_series)
Yochanan also reviewed 'Anaconda' - a comedy out in theatres now - saying that it has a meandering plot that is all over the place and is not really well-written. He rates it as not worth seeing in theatres and maybe only worth streaming. He also comments that Sony is name-dropped multiple times in the movie.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaconda_(2025_film)
Yochanan also reviewed a Prime series called 'Gen V', a follow-on series in the universe of 'The Boys' with 'more penises than he has seen in a long time' and a lot of violence. He found the storyline to be done very well and he liked it quite a lot - rating it worth full price. Rick enthusiastically endorses' Yochanan's opinion and comments that the humor is very dark, with over the top violence & he also recommends the show.

see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Level
Yochanan also reviewed another Amazon Prime show called 'It, Welcome to Derry', a semi-prequel to the Stephen King novel 'It' as being rather interesting, while a bit on the mystical side. It's somewhat over the top with violence and worth paying full price to see
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_%E2%80%93_Welcome_to_Derry
Yochanan also reviewed a Netflix show called '1899' that starts as a historical drama, moves on to time travel and science fiction. He thought it had lots of potential - but sadly there is only the one season. He enjoyed the use of multiple languages, but thinks the English dub is terrible. He considers it still well-worth watching and also recommends the 'making of' special, as well. Rick agrees with Yochanan's opinion & there was some discussion of the topic

Yochanan: Zootopia2 (in theatres) CGI animated film. returning characters, and new ones – including the voices of Danny Trejo and Patrick Warburton. Excellent world building, introducing reptiles into the world (with explanation of their previous absence). There’s a post credit scene that may set up another film. Possibly full price – fun movie! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zootopia_2
NOS4A2 (Netflix) The title is a plate on a Rolls-Royce Sp.E.C.T.R.E.. Based on a book by Joe Hill (Steven Kings son!) Horror series with Christmas music. Zackary Quinto is the lead. Hooked from the first episode – but many find the book better. Not perfect, but worth full price. Liked it a lot. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOS4A2_(TV_series)
The Jewish Heroes collection (book series he bought through a 3Below sale) The highlight was “Fascinating” the life of Leonard Nimoy by Richard Michelson (who also exhibited Nimoy’s photography!) The collection is worth more than full price. Beautiful books. richardmichelson.com/childrens-books/fascinating/

Rick: The War Between the Land and the Sea (BBC 1, Disney+ in 2026) really liked it. Well done. When RTD is feeling good, he only kills a small amount of the cast. The plot does rush at the end, but has nice touches. There is a inter-credit scene. Pretty good stuff. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_Between_the_Land_and_the_Sea
Ken: Pretty decent. Kate gets quite dark in this. Something that was commented on in a previous episode comes back. The resolution of the war is reminiscent of what the Legion of Rassilon is currently watching. And, yes, the Legion of Rassilon will be showing this five episode story at their January, February, and March meetings. Disney+ release date is still TBA.
and Rick reviewed: Pluribus (?TV) it has reached its penultimate episode (he has an alarm for Wednesday’s finale, though it’s getting a second series). Not predictable. Excellent story-telling. Tour de force. Looking forward to the finale and next season. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluribus_(TV_series)

Reviews:

Ken reviewed 'Wake up Dead Man', the 3rd Benoit Blanc murder mystery (aka A Knives Out mystery) that he saw on Netflix as enjoyable & that it's showing at 3Below for the next week. He rates it as 'definitely worth having Netflix to see it'
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake_Up_Dead_Man

Yochanan reviewed 'Five Nights at Freddie's 2' - based on the video game - as he enjoyed it. His nephew plays the game and says it follows the game well & comments that reviewers who savage the film don't play the game. He recommends either playing the game, or being aware of it before seeing the movie since it is information dense.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Nights_at_Freddy%27s_2_(film)
Yochanan also reviewed an aid to viewing 'Star Trek Deep Space 9' in a more condensed version as 'it helps to see the series that way and skip all the junk'. He has really enjoyed watching the show again and rates it as worth full price - but Paramount Plus needs to work on their programming. Gerry followed, recommended getting a 'Goldberg Whoopie cushion' & Trey is happy that someone is a '10 Forward thinker'

Valerie reviewed attending the Santa Clara City Hall menorah lighting tonight as she found it to be very nice. There was free junk food and sugared up kids with lots of fun had by many. The rabbi fire juggled, break danced, somersaulted ... and accidentally lit a tree on fire. The fire dept was fortunately in attendance & the mayor was dancing by the end.

Valerie also reviewed this year's Hallmark Hannukah/Christmas Special, 'Oy to the World', as it got some basic visual information wrong [it sounds cringe-inducing]. She reports that the principle actors had little to no chemistry and overall sounds like it isn't very good.
see = https://www.hallmarkchannel.com/oy-to-the-world

Geri reviewed the Winchester Mystery House as currently being a bit spooky and 'Ren Faire like' and you can get your picture taken with Krampus. It's lots of fun

Announcements:

Yochanan: Star Fleet Academy (Jan 13, Paramount+) A new poster has been released, which looks a bit “Star Fleet 90210”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Starfleet_Academy_(TV_series)

Reviews

Yochanan: Eternity (A24, theatres) Fantasy with Elizabeth Olsen, of a soul who has to decide to spend eternity with her first (long deceased) husband, or her most recent. Cute and charming, and light for a serious subject. Zero CGI. Refreshing. B+ Definitely matinee, maybe full price.

This reminded Gerald of a story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternity_(2025_film)

Yochanan also reviewed = Dr. Seuses’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (back in theatres) Lots of practical effects, but a little dated. Followed the original cartoon, with extra padding. Characters follow the dimensions of the Whos in Horton Hears a Who (aka tiny). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_the_Grinch_Stole_Christmas_(2000_film)
Jerry watched recently, and amazed by the acting level of Jim Carey.
Yochanan also reviewed = Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. His second book, written in his 20s (??) the first third was best, bogged down in the middle, and resolved too quickly. Not the nicest portrayal of a Jewish character (Fagan). Oliver is a little too noble. He prefers David Copperfield and a Tale of Two Cities. Solid B, even if a bit long. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Twist
Gerald suggests Hard Times by Charles Dickens: industrial Capitalism in 19th-century Coketown, following Thomas Gradgrind's children, Louisa and Tom, as their utilitarian upbringing leads to emotional emptiness and moral ruin, culminating in Tom's bank robbery, Louisa's loveless marriage to the wealthy Bounderby, and the false accusation and tragic death of the worker Stephen Blackpool; ultimately, the novel shows the dehumanizing effects of industrialization, exposing Bounderby's lies and prompting Gradgrind to embrace compassion and imagination, with Louisa finding meaning in helping others en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Times_(novel)

Rick: The War Between the Land and the Sea (BBC, and D+ eventually) Five part series. UNIT heavy, no Doctor (mentioned). Disney money has been used to great effect. Very winning everyman person, coping with elevated importance. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_Between_the_Land_and_the_Sea

Gerald: Won an art print in a a raffle at Los Con of an art deco rocket (from the Fritz Lang film Frau im Mond). Has fallen in love with it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman_in_the_Moon

Lisa: LosCon (in LA) Harold enjoyed the gaming room (with a small computer room). She enjoyed the panels, including ones with Gerald. Worth the hassle of driving down. New hotel Hilton LAX, smaller but a good size (and closer to other food items). loscon.org

Ken = Frackham Hall (theatres) Poking fun at those Upstairs Downton Abbey type programs. Orphan boy joins staff at manor that is in danger of being lost by current family. Funny. Does not have the LPM (laugh per minute) of Airplane!, but still enjoyable. There are some visual jokes that might require some more attention (as in, I didn’t catch it this time). BritCom fans: full price, Everyone else: Matinee. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fackham_Hall
Fantastic 4: First Steps (Disney+) Finally got around to watching this. Great world building – an alternate ‘60s, with a retro mid-century futurism. Not the greatest Marvel film, but definitely enjoyable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fantastic_Four%3A_First_Steps

and Gerry also announced that he won a cool Art Deco rocket picture in an at-con raffle

Rick announced that John Scalzi has released the 7th novel in the 'Old Man' series, called 'The Shattering Peace'

Reviews:

Yochanan reviewed 'The Running Man' remake as a popcorn movie and worth matinee. He hears that this version is closer to the Stephen King story and liked it well enough.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Running_Man_(2025_film)
Yochanan also reviewed 'The Naked Gun' remake, streaming on Paramount right now as 'so silly' and not that good. Ken followed, agreeing that the original was much better and that it was worth 'matinee maybe', but don't expect too much out of it.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Naked_Gun_(2025_film)
Yochanan also reviewed 'Wicked for Good' as it doesn't have any songs that 'jumped out at him' and felt much less magical than part 1. He rates it as worth matinee for him. There was some discussion.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked:_For_Good

Rick reviewed more of the 2nd season of 'Pluribus' on Apple TV and continues to enjoy the series. He notes that there is not 'a single wasted word or action in the entire season' thus far. It is very 'morbidly funny', is very fresh & Rick appreciates this a great deal. He is 'definitely along for the ride'.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluribus_(TV_series)

Robin reviewed 'Surviving Daylight', a book by local author Kendra Merritt. Robin enjoyed the story and found it quite good. 'A book so nice we bought it twice'. She recommends it highly.
see = https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/123005294-surviving-daybreak

Gerry reviewed LosCon as they had a good time, although there was a minor problem with the way the organizers set up the Dealer's Room. He & Valerie managed to sell books while there anyway. The Con was otherwise well-organized, the badge typeface was large & legible & appreciated. There were only a few 'anomalies' with the hotel.

Gerry also reviewed Fritz Lang's 'Frau im Mond' as very innovative, and the picture he won was based on it. There was some discussion.

Reviews:

Rick reviewed the 2nd season of 'Pluribus' on Apple TV as the series contains many familiar acting faces & is very 'Twilight Zone-y'. It really feels different & the acting is excellent, with the stories going in unexpected directions. He is 'definitely fully-invested in the show' and heartily recommends it. Duncan followed, saying that the series causes deep thoughts, especially compared to the modern political system.

Kennita reviewed 'Wicked For Good' in 3D as the special effects showed well in 3D. She thought the movie was interesting & enjoyed the way the plot was done. She rates the movie as a 'solid B+' but not quite as impressive as she might have hoped. She thinks it will make a good 'sing-a-long' movie.

Announcements:

Reviews

Rick: first season of Pluribus (?TV) is ongoing. Audacious series from the Breaking Bad creator. Fan of 50s classic SF. In the style of classic Twilight Zone (though not an anthology). Hard to not spoil. Albuquerque is the setting. The big threat isn’t very threatening, and the good guys aren’t very good. They have two-year commitment. First episode is the best thing he’s seen lately. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluribus_(TV_series)

John: Predator: Badlands (in theatres) latest in the Alien/Predator universe. No humans, and no connections to other characters. Core is exploration of the Predator culture. Follows a runt Predator, and a half a synth. Standard youth adventure, with a group of friends – but on rails. Great cinematography. Recommend matinee, but they did a good job of 3D. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predator:_Badlands

Yochanan: A lot of CGI, which was a problem for him. Really build on the world-building of the Predator culture. Kind of Klingon-esque. Planet is like Australia on steroids. Smartly done. B++ stand-alone film. Only full price if this is your jam.
also = Twisted Metal (Peacock) Binged season 2. Definitely not suitable for NBC (lot of violence). Anthony Mackie as the Milk Man, – who delivers stuff across a near future wasteland (most cities are now walled fortresses). Season one was in New San Francisco. He finds it deathly boring being in the ultimate HOA. SF CEO wants him to participate in a tournament of “travelers.” This brings it more in line with the video game. Mackie is not needing to stretch his talent in this roll… No deep plots, but fun to watch them bash each other up. Violent, bloody). Don’t need to see season 1 to see 2. Recommend, especially if you already have Peacock. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twisted_Metal_(TV_series)

Duncan: The Brand New Testamant (2015 streaming) by writer/director Jaco Van Gormael (of Mr Nobody (2009)). God is alive in Brussels, in an apartment with no windows or doors. Amazing, delightful, parody of religion. Highly recommend. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brand_New_Testament
Rick: Works, but is extremely French.

Yochanan: The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (AMC+) recently concluded third season. Best spinoff of the Walking Dead. Set in Spain, mixed language, beautiful locations. A+ for whole series, A++ for season 3. Highly recommended. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead:_Daryl_Dixon
also = Monster House (2006) GC/MoCap animated horror/comic. Crazy story. Fun, dated, nostalgia. Maybe tween and up.

Aatheus: Remembers it as being goofy/fun horror. Polar Express syndrome (the CGI). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_House_(film)
also = Wish Upon (2017) Horror/Fantasy. Feels like a Netflix film. Jolie King is a teenage girl given a Chinese magic box, with 7 wishes (with the usual caveats). Was a bit disappointing. C- worth meh. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wish_Upon

Aatheus: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Worth the wait. This series has no right to be so good and so clever (as a friend of his said). The Gamora sub plot kind of bogs it down, but still highly recommended. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_Vol._3
Yochanan: Loved it, and Aetheus’ friend is right.
also = When The Moon Hits Your Eye, by John Scalzi. After effects of the moon turning into cheese. A Scalzi novel: AKA not bad (and suffers from sadism…) The audio book was narrated by Wil Wheaton. Good time filler for a trip back from Paris. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Moon_Hits_Your_Eye

Ken = R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots, Lohman Theatre, Foothill College) West Coast premiere of a recent updating of the classic Karel Capek. Simple one set staging (two acts) great cast, and a great story. A play from over 100 years ago, still relevant on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Our performance was followed by a discussion on AI (it wasn’t listed as a feature when we purchased). The theatre is very intimate, so there’s no bad place to sit. Run ends this Sunday (23 November). Highly recommend. foothill.edu/theatre/RUR.html

Lisa: Nightmare Before Christmas Hollywood Bowl. Look for it online (there’s been a couple songs on FaceBook) – it was wonderful! There’s also a making of out there with Danny Elfman.

Rumor of the Week: “Parisian Furries,” not a phrase you expect to hear every day.

Reviews:

Yochanan reviewed a Netflix show called the 'Lazarus Project'. He saw it on Netflix, describing it as an action - spy - thriller that grabbed him from episode one. There are 2 seasons of 8 episodes each. The entire series is rated well with excellent acting and he considers it absolutely worth full price
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lazarus_Project_(TV_series)
and Yochanan also reviewed the Murderbot Diary book series by Martha Wells, having now read the entire series, as 'reading one makes you want to read all the others, like popcorn'. He finds the entire series delightful. He recommends both the books and the TV adaptation as wonderful, worth seeking out and 'so much fun to read'.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Murderbot_Diaries
and Yochanan also reviewed a film called 'Weapons' that is streaming right now. The film is a supernatural horror movie that he found to be outstanding and worked on many levels. He considers it absolutely worth full price, especially since he usually doesn't like horror movies at all. Again, highly recommended.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weapons_(2025_film)

Randy reviewed a book, 'The Unkillable Frank Lightning' by Josh Rountree, as a reimagining of the Frankenstein idea set in the Old West & highly recommends it. Also set in the same universe is the author's first novel, 'The Legend of Charlie Fish' that he also recommends.
see = https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/217105589-the-unkillable-frank-lightning

Ken reviewed the Guillermo del Toro version of 'Frankenstein' - that was briefly out in theaters & is now on Netflix - as it was gorgeously done and is worth full price. Yochanan opined that it is a visually striking movie. He thought it done very well & highly recommends it.
see = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankenstein_(2025_film)

Rick reviewed Guy Fawkes day as 'Guy got burned'. He says it was a nice day on the beach & a fun time was had by all
and Rick also reviewed 'Fantastic Four, First Steps' as the set design is retro-1960s and fun, although he is only 30 minutes into the movie thus far. Thus far he finds it very well done. Yochanan followed, saying that he saw it when it was in the theater and liked it a lot.

Reviews

Yochanan: What We Left Behind (YouTube, and maybe other places) Documentary about Deep Space Nine. Very enjoyable. Worth full price (though, it was free). youtube.com/watch?v=Ya8WTQc93yI
Invasion (Apple+) 3 x 10 episodes. Just concluded. Slow burn show. A lot of real time, and real languages. Non-humanoid aliens, with indiscernable motives. Plot meanders on a glacial pace. Disappointing. B+ for effort, C- for execution. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_(2021_TV_series)
Star Trek: Khan (audio drama on various platforms) Final episode (9 total). The story of what happenned on Ceti Alpha 5 between Space Seed and Wrath of Khan. George Takai and Time Russ are in it. Entertaining show to listen to. Worth full price – highly recommend! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Khan

Rick: The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (various services, and DVD) Bruce Campbell in a weird western, last thing shot on the WB western lot. Forward looking lawman in 1863. Tone is just under over the top. Light, action orientated, and a delight so far. Looking forward to the rest of the one season. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Brisco_County,_Jr.
Lisa saw it on first run, and liked it enough to by the DVDs (most likely from Dave Clark).

Gerald: Happened on an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess. Got mixed up with Julius Caesar. Didn’t do too badly on some history. Worth the time to watch.
Rick says one does not watch it for a sense of history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xena:_Warrior_Princess

Rumor of the Week: Gerald had a good rumor, but that was 20 minutes ago.
