Volkswagen to Launch New Subcompact SUV in India by 2027; To Rival Brezza, Venue, Sonet and Kylaq

Volkswagen has confirmed, the German carmaker is building an all-new subcompact SUV for India, one that will slot in under the crucial four-metre mark and go on sale in 2027. The announcement marks the company's first real push into the country's biggest and most fiercely contested vehicle segment.

For years, Volkswagen has watched from the sidelines as rivals fought over India's sub-four-metre SUV space, a segment kept artificially attractive by a tax structure that rewards shorter vehicles. Maruti Suzuki's Brezza, Tata's Nexon, Hyundai's Venue and Kia's Sonet have all built their businesses around this space, and even Volkswagen's own sister brand, Skoda, has been cashing in with the Kylaq since late 2024. Volkswagen itself, meanwhile, has stuck to pricier territory with the Taigun, Virtus, Tiguan R-Line and Tayron.

That changes with this new model, which the company describes as its most accessible German-engineered SUV yet for the Indian market. It will be built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, a version of Volkswagen Group's modular architecture that was developed jointly by engineering teams in India and Europe specifically for local tastes, price points and regulations. Volkswagen says the car will also be manufactured in India, reinforcing what it calls a long-term commitment to the country.

For all its detail on positioning and platform, Volkswagen is quiet on specifics. There's no name, no design sketch, no confirmed engine, and no price. The company hasn't even confirmed a precise launch month, only committing to "2027." That lines up with how Volkswagen has handled this project so far. It has let dealers, suppliers and media speculation do much of the talking while keeping the official messaging focused on strategy rather than specifications.
