With our industry and government partners, we have worked together to identify suspected mortgage fraud and vulnerabilities across Australia's financial system. This includes loans obtained using falsified documentation through organised networks of facilitators to obtain home loans against real properties. Operation Claw highlighted weaknesses that could be exploited by criminals seeking to abuse Australia's financial system. It also reinforced the importance of public-private collaboration in detecting and disrupting emerging financial crime threats. June is Elder Abuse Awareness month. A recent study by Seniors Rights Victoria found that 1 in 6 people 65 years and older in Australia had experienced at least one form of elder abuse over the previous 12 months. At Fintel Alliance, we work on a broad range of issues to protect the community from financial harm, including elder abuse. We’ll soon be releasing a new financial crime guide focused on protecting older Australians from financial abuse, with practical indicators to support detection and prevention across industry and government. AUSTRAC intelligence has helped locate an alleged fugitive wanted for serious crimes. The arrest comes just a week after #AUSTRAC intelligence was used to locate a 67-year-old Vietnamese national who was extradited from Sydney to Vietnam for alleged property crimes in her home country.
