fandom snowflake day 3
Jan. 3rd, 2016 06:43 pmIn your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
so, obviously, i love recommending myself, though i am also rightly embarrassed by it. i'm going to rec four, because recommending three just puts me in the awkward position of either not reccing a D/M work (when i think that it's pretty important to who i am as a writer) or not reccing anything i've written in the last three years. so - here we go. incidentally my methodology is - my favourites, narrowing down particularly to my favourites that define me.
The Sleepwalker (Doctor Who, Doctor/Master+ensemble, January 2011)
Recommended because: One of the first fics that took Roberts!Master seriously, though it's also one of my last Whofics, so I'm at the height of my "powers" regarding writing my favourite Doctor (the eighth) and companions. It's both curtain fic, and (thanks to a familiar appearance of the Time War - a massive concern in my writing/one of my favourite plot mcguffins) epic enough that it can't be written off as fluff. It also inspired me to write tens of thousands of words of sequel (and spin-off material seems like quite a good way of gauging whether a story has been successful/it's easier to be invested in it if you spend that length of time with the characters).
The Importance of Being On Stage (Gallifrey, Brax+ensemble, February 2012)
Recommended because: Gallifrey fandom got away from me, but I feel like I was quite important to it at the beginning, there. I tended to write farces set around Brax in this fandom, and this is the best one - I still think it's hilarious, with everything slotting beautifully into place character-wise. When I was re-reading it for this rec I began laughing at the casting of Jack all over again. It also accomplishes what it wants to in a short space of time, which you can't say for any of the others. It has a remix, a podfic by someone else, and a Russian translation, which helps assure me that it is indeed v good.
An Apple Cleft in Two (Blake's 7, Blake/Avon+ensemble, October 2013)
Recommended because: Easily my favourite B7 fic that I've written, which is a bit of a shame as it's quite old now - but it was a joy to write. It has all my favourite ridiculous tropes, quite a convincing magic!science-plot (where usually I can't be bothered to think of one), Avon having strong relationships with practically everyone (but most of all, with Blake), funny lines, good sex writing, and it's warm. It has two sequels - only one of which I wrote.
Then I wibbled about recommending Human Nature (is it better than everything else? I asked myself, and concluded probably not. It's certainly not more liked or more important), but then fortunately i worked out what i should rec...
Pride and Prejudice (zine) (Blake's 7, Blake/Avon+ensemble, September 2015)
Recommended because: It's the first B7 zine for X years - proving that the fandom isn't dead, and that it remembers and builds on its past. It features new Suzan Lovett artwork that I magically managed to get (because she was so nice) as well as old Suzan Lovett artwork, as well as many many thousands of words of great fic that people wrote only because I asked them to be in a zine (x_los only started writing B/A for this zine ...). As well as writing my own (perfectly OK) fics for the zine, I also imposed my own views of the characters onto the other writers through editing and through rejecting material that didn't fit. It printed up beautifully, and looks like something worth keeping around. It's a lasting testament to the work that I did in this fandom - which I think I can fairly say goes beyond just writing fanfic and stretches into reinvigoration and memorialising (slight exaggeration obviously as I have nothing to do with Horizon - still going strong! - and Tumblr, but still, not insignificant I think). Even though the fic is all online, you should all buy a copy!
