In January, Bookscorpion over on Pillowfort recommended an app for doing pilates exercises at home. I have today finished Day 43 of the beginner's program.

It continues to humble me. Today I learned I am incapable of 60 seconds of jumping jacks. A full minute is a surprisingly long time!

I'm sticking with it quite well, though. There have been some breaks here and there due to illness and travelling, but I've been doing it every day as much as possible. It's not difficult when it's only ten to fifteen minutes.

I'm going to keep adding days to the beginner's program for as long as possible. It's plenty difficult thank you very much. I don't feel at all ready for intermediate, and I am downright frightened of advanced!

In happier news than my last few posts, I am sitting in my room!

This renovation project has taken longer than we expected, as we ran into some significant delays due to Christmas, illness, and family emergencies. But today we moved my desk back in, Husband mounted the new ceiling lamp and the curtains and we also moved the chair back in. New cupboards and the rest of the furniture will have to wait a bit longer, because it seems easier to buy and get the new stuff in first and move the rest of the existing afterwards. We have managed to reclaim a bit of our lounge.

I have a picture up of the progress so far on Pillowfort. Never mind the untidy desk, things were just sort of piled back on it randomly.

I did have to come up with plan B, though, because it turned out that with the rug I initially wanted under the desk, there wouldn't be enough room for the bookcases. The conclusion was that it was just not possible with the rug I had in mind to puzzle things in, in any way that didn't mean having to give up something. So I decided to give up the rug.

This decision was also helped by several quite recent reviews on Ikea's website about it not being cut straight. Not encouraging! I shall go without the rug for now and keep the dreaded floor protecter, and then if I later find I actually do want one after all, I'll go somewhere I can have it cut to measure instead. It'll be significantly more expensive, but probably a better quality and fit all in all.

My previous post has turned into a bit of a collection of other people's experiences with arranging funerals and their customs, which was unintended but which I've actually been finding quite helpful. There is a surprising amount of comfort in it, even if I haven't been replying (and am unlikely to do, sorry). I hadn't expected that. Aside from grandparents, it's the first time for me that it has been quite so close a relation.

Husband is on his way home. Uncertain about what time he'll arrive here other than 'late'.

I've been making a spinach lasagne so there's something in the fridge he can heat up if he needs it. The word 'lasagne' is doing some heavy lifting here, because when I did the shopping for it, I confidently assumed there was a whole box of it in the cupboard.

There was not.

There was enough for one layer, so I had to improvise for the other layers and have used spaghetti. I mean, pasta is pasta. It'll be fine.*

Funeral thoughts )

*It is, in fact, fine. A little more unruly to serve, though.

**It used to be a rule that the funeral should take place within a week of the death, so that's what we're used to here. I've never arranged one myself, so I can't really say what the difference is. Maybe it just went so much quicker because it had to? I'm informed, however, by a coworker who lost her father last year that this rule is in fact no longer in effect.

My estimate of snow depth turns out to have been a little exaggerated. About 16-17 cm in this part of the garden. Elsewhere in the garden I measured 23, but apparently failed to get a photo of that. The other two photos are from a few days ago, documenting a couple of garden visitors.

Also, the projected -20 next sunday was downgraded first to a still severe but less unusual -13, and then to a much more reasonable -5. They are however saying there's a risk of second load of snow next week. Lovely... Hopefully that's going to get downgraded as well.

(Husband, who can work from home, finds shovelling a good trade-off for the excitement of a lot of snow, and is keeping a running Snow Watch commentary...)

I was only at work for about an hour yesterday before sending myself home again. It was one of those times where you're unsure if you're actually a bit sick or if you're just tired and it'll clear up once you get going. Well, it didn't and I managed to leave before it got bad.

Unlike the previous time we were threatened with a snow storm, this one actually happened and all public transport from here is currently cancelled so I wouldn't have been able to go to work today anyway. However, because it's a sick day, I won't have to pay for an unexpected day off with holiday hours. So my timing isn't actually all that bad. Silver lining and all that, although I would have preferred to not be sick. Husband works from home on Fridays anyway, so he's fine.

It's still snowing out there, but we've got most of it now. We have gone from an orange warning to a blue warning overnight*. Not sure how deep it is, but I would estimate maybe 20-30 cm. The bird bath is so completely covered you can't even see that it's there, so that's an indicator of how deep it is.

The warmest temperature on the forecast for the next nine days at the moment is 0°C, so it's not going to go away anytime soon. In fact next weekend we might get down to -20°C at night. This is extremely unusual for this country, even at night!

Snow plough just came by. Our street is in the second priority category, so that's not bad if they got to us already.

*Scale is Red-Orange-Yellow-Blue, with blue being the mildest. I'm not sure I've ever experienced a red one.

Well, that was rather a full day.

We started with an appointment with a solicitor regarding setting up wills, which, while unpleasant, turned out to not be as unpleasant as expected. I liked the woman we spoke to. She seemed friendly and had some input on which details might or might not be relevant for us, and some of them were about things we hadn't even thought of.

Finished the day off with a vet appointment for Holly, who has an inflamed tooth. The veterinary nurse agreed with me that it looked Capital S Suspicious, so she's now booked in for the full works. X-rays, teeth cleaning and possibly removal of the bad tooth if they can do it at the same time. She said she could make the booking with extra time for the extraction, but it ultimately depends on what they see on the pictures. If it's more complicated than just the one tooth, it will take too long. I have previously been told it's also a question of there being a limit to how long they can safely keep a cat knocked out. They'll do some blood tests on her at the same time, which is a non-mandatory routine check of organ functions. With several previous kidney-cats, it's not non-mandatory to us.

Roll on the weekend, with book swap day at the library and opera in the cinema!

I booked Holly in for a vet appointment. I strongly suspect she's got an inflamed tooth. It looked rather red around it when I looked at her teeth, but we'll see what they say. If it is inflamed, I'd be surprised if it wasn't FORL* rearing its ugly head again. Ah, it was quite nice not having any chronic conditions going on for a few weeks.

*Feline Oral Resorption Lesion. It's a weird condition where the cat can basically get cavities in their teeth from the inside out. Unknown what triggers it, but it's quite common in cats. Both Luna and Charm had teeth removed because of it.

We went to the museum today. We have a year pass, so entry is free. We only have to go a couple of times a year for it to be worth it and we also get a discount in the shop, the cafe and if we want to go to some of the talks they have there.

They have a new special exhibition every year and this year it's about the Celts. It actually opened back in September, (I think? August? There about. Doesn't matter.) but we haven't had time to go until now. There's just been so much and we had done that thing we do where we suddenly find we have tickets for everything and not a plan-free weekend in sight. Plus there was the Christmas trip to the UK and the sudden unplanned trip to the UK in autumn, so what few plan-free weekends we had were very much guarded and protected.

Anyway, the Celts. I had thought that there might be fewer people there since it had been open for so long, but I still had to wait my turn in a lot of places before I got to see the things, and try to read some text over someone's shoulder and hope they didn't move to block my view before I was done.

It was very interesting, especiallly seeing how many of the things shown were things found in Denmark, even though the Celtish culture didn't actually stretch this far. We were all Germannic tribes up here, but there was clearly a lot of culture and mythology that was shared. Plus obviously there would have been a lot of influence from trade, and maybe some marriage alliances and such as well. And probably your basic copying of styles and fashions in both directions. Did not know how obsessed they were with chopped off heads, though!

Absolutely made us want to dip in the Asterix collection again though. :)

I bought the catalogue, because I always do. It's nice to be able to see photos of all the items again and there's usually also a lot more information to read. It's only really the highlights that make it into the exhibition. So that's mandatory, and I'm quite happy with the collection of them that we have at this point.

They do have a pretty good book section in their shop and I had a good look for interesting titles, but didn't get anything else this time. There were a couple of things I was a little interested in, but I'm also really behind on the unread books that we already have, so that made me rather more picky about it. If the same title tempts me next time I can get it then.

Big Clean Up No 1 has started. I had not forgotten how much fun this isn't. I've been looking forward to it because it's the end of the plastering phase and the beginning of the painting phase so it marks significant progress. But it's not fun. Once more so glad I bought that shop vac. Big Blue is such a huge help in this. (I remember cleaning the utility room before we had it, dealing with the drifts(!) of dust with a broom and a dust pan.) Big Clean Up No 2 will take place tomorrow, and then we'll see how many more times after that the floor needs mopping before it no longer feels dusty to the touch. Probably a couple. I'm glad we're only doing this once. I'm also glad we're doing it one room at the time. I think cleaning the whole house post-plastering would probably make me cry. (Plus, of course, we wouldn't be able to live here during.)

Was talking with a co-worker yesterday about both of us wanting new kitchens, preferably without having to go through the actual process. We're saving the kitchen for the very last thing, so we've got a few years still before getting to that. One room a year seems to be the best pace for us.

I think I've settled on the colour. It's been WAY more difficult for this room than any of the others. At first I found I liked this particular one best. Then I became uncertain about it and eventually circled back to it. This cycle has now happened at least three times, so I'm going to take it as a sign. Besides, it's paint. If it really does turn out to be a mistake it can be repainted. That would be really annoying to have to do, but it would be possible.

Still haven't made the curtains.

Right. Back to the dust hell.
angrboda: Viking style dragon head finial against a blue sky (Default)
Husband is currently putting the very final touches on the plastering in my room. I get to do the cleanup on wednesday and thursday. It works out pretty well actually, because I worked yesterday so I get thursday off instead, and I can just get it over with. He already hovered up most of the dust, so I'm already well helped there. Once that's done, he can paint it (still haven't fully settled on a colour), and then it's getting the new furniture, getting that installed and moving back in. Still haven't managed to have a go at those curtains, though.

It's not going to be today, because there's opera this afternoon. Andrea Chenier, which I had never heard of before, by Giordano, who I had also never heard about before. It was a bit uncertain whether or not we would go what with me having a one day weekend and all, but I was listening to it while at work yesterday and I thought it seemed pretty good. Plus, it's opera in the cinema, so it's a Met production and those are always pretty lavish and worth seeing.
angrboda: A primula flower (Marine Blue). Petals are blue, center is yellow. (Primula)
Snowpocalypse seems to have been downgraded rather. At least where I live. Up north they're still under an orange weather warning.

In other news, I received some colour cards today. What they had in the paint shop was quite limited, because purple is apparently not a fashionable colour this year or something, but I could order some more on their website and pretty much just put anything in my basket that had purple in the name. I'll have to have a good look at them in the room tomorrow in daylight. I do have a new tentative favourite now, though. We can get paint samples, so if in doubt that's what we'll do.

I'm also hoping to get the sewing machine out tomorrow and have a stab at the curtains. Husband is nearly finished with plastering and sanding, so I can't keep putting it off. I cut the (rather expensive) fabric the other days, so we're already past the point of no return. It's just a question of getting it done now and remember the stuff I learned while making the bedroom curtains.

ETA: "Though" Gosh, I overuse this word. Please don't make any drinking games based on this, I fear it might end poorly.
angrboda: Viking style dragon head finial against a blue sky (Default)
Don't you just love it when looking at a weather forecast and there's a coloured scale showing the expected amounts of snow, and then half the country is a colour not represented on the scale?

How does light green fall on a scale from white to dark blue???

(Yes, we might be looking a some large amounts of snow next week. Here's hoping it won't be like the one we had two years ago at around this time. Back then we had people at work who couldn't get home for two nights. We sent them home on day three as soon as the roads were sufficiently clear. "Yes, I know it's not even time for coffee break yet, your work day is done, goodbye.")

Gosh, I nearly forgot!

10 things I did in 2025 that I have never done before:

1. Hosted nearly 20 people in our lounge at the same time!

2. First important marriage anniversary milestone (Copper anniversary, 12½ years)

3. Discovered the Fish Doorbell, and spent a LOT of time just staring at a coloured rectangle with no fish in it.

4. Saw Heilung in concert

5. Went to a baby shower

6. Sewed a skirt out of some unused duvet covers.

7. Released a hedgehog in our garden.

8. Signed up to be a stem cell donor. (Apparently this can be done with blood these days and there's a less than one percent chance of being a match with someone, but then at least I'm on file.)

9. Dug and planted a whole flower bed almost all by myself.

10. Was present for the death of a pet.
angrboda: My cat Luna. She's white and grey (Luna)
I went to the pharmacy today to give back Luna's left-over medicine. Also washed and decommisioned one of the cat toilets. It doesn't feel necessary to have two while Holly is an only-cat.

In a few months, when we're ready, we will of course find a new co-cat for her that she can train and teach everything that she knows. I have been low-key collecting potential names since we got Holly.

I have been thinking about it, and I have come to the conclusion that I don't think there is any alternative reality in which the medicine we were given, or any other medicine, would have worked. I think it was simply her time. 14½ is not a bad age for a cat after all.

I have a germinating idea for a little memorial feature in the garden, which may or may not happen. I need to consider and plan, and then see what we can do in spring. I like the idea of something small and simple that you might not even notice unless you already know it's there.

Dear Americans, especially those of limited means,

I came across this. I don't know if it's accurate, but if this offer is in any way relevant to you, it might be worth checking it out.

Link has details about an offer from Aldi for a Thanksgiving meal package costing $40 and containing food to feed ten people. There's a list of what's in the package. Even if you don't actually plan to feed that many, that's still a lot of food that sounds like a lot of it could be frozen or stored for another day. If the offer is true, it sounds like a really good deal. I'm not entirely certain what the equivalen of $40 is in my local currency, but it doesn't sound like an awful lot for this amount of food.

Yesterday, at work, I managed to get myself into a spot of bother.

In order to promote the personnel policy, hospital management have been handing out these chocolate confectionaries (P tærter, containing white nougat and peanuts, covered in chocolate) with stickers on them to go and read said policy. (Which, incidentally, is exactly the sort of inconcrete high-flying nonsense that you would expect) I happen to know, because I've checked previously due to Husband being vegetarian, that these contain gelatine.

And so at lunch a coworker sat down across the table from me and put her chocolate next to her plate no doubt to have as a little dessert. Said coworker is muslim. I couldn't not tell her when I knew it had gelatine in it, because I didn't know how strict she is about it.

Flist, she was so disappointed. It had never occurred to her that chocolate might not be safe for her to eat and she loves those. At first she tried to argue that it didn't say that it was gelatine from swine, but failed to convince herself that it was okay, and in the end she couldn't bring herself to eat it. Instead she gave it to me, which made me feel like I had tricked her out of her chocolate, so I couldn't bring myself to eat it either, and ended up giving it to a third person with the complete story of why it was a bit tainted.

I absolutely think it was the best thing to tell her about it, especially since it obviously did matter to her, but the guilt was still real.

When Husband does the grocery shopping for next week, I have asked him to buy me a Snickers bar. Those are definitely safe and it's a relatively similar confectionary, so I will give her that on Monday instead. A little plaster on the wound.

Can't imagine what purpose the gelatine could possibly have in there, though.
angrboda: A treble clef symbol on a sheet of music (Music)
We went to opera cinema today. This time the Met offered us La Somnambula (The Sleepwalker) by Bellini, which was rather thin plot-wise but I'm going to want to listen to the music again.

This was also the second one we've seen where they've had the general manager of the Met say a few words at the beginning and both times, without mentioning him at all, it was abundantly clear that he is NOT a fan of That Guy. You know the one. This time it was a bit of a greeting/dedication to "those who are marching, those who have marched and those who wish they could be marching." I have decided I rather like him.

We have also put in the calendar our first go at Opera on the Sofa and we'll see if we can make that a thing. We will stream one or procure a disk or something (almost certainly stream one, we have sources), and we will get some cheese and some biscuits and some goodies and snacks and maybe I'll make some little sandwiches, and we'll have a brunch-y nom to go with the opera. Bit like we do with the concert from Vienna on new year's day. It's a bit of a test run. If it does become a thing that we do from time to time, we might try out the Met's own streaming subscription and indulge in more of their stuff, and then we can also see the things that aren't going to work out with the cinema. Husband, for example, was quite disappointed that Tristan and Isolde isn't going to be possible for us to go and see.

*

In other non-operatic news, we are making good progress on wall paper removal in my room. We are well over half way at this point. Not a lot is likely to be happening next weekend as we're going to a wedding, but we'll probably be close to finished with this step then.

Have also received the fabric for my new curtains, but there's no haste in sewing them yet.
angrboda: Viking style dragon head finial against a blue sky (Default)
We are getting our ducks in a row to get started on renovating my room. I have packed down all the books and most of the loose objects. As part of the project Husband wants to chase some cables into the wall, so he's also been shopping for tools and equipment for that.

Me, I've been looking at finding a rug that I want to put under my desk, because I get chilly feet and I hate this plastic floor protector that always seems filthy no matter what I do. It's like it attracts dust and cat hair and refuses to let go. Ikea seems to have a good candidate in the colour and size that I want.

I have also been searching for curtain fabric. Because it's not a bedroom (normally), I don't have to worry too much about light exclusion, so I have allowed myself to be picky. And I am indeed very picky. Last year, while searching for curtain fabric for the bedroom, I came across some that I thought would be a really good choice, and I was sure I'd be able to find it again. Can I heck! I'm sure I was looking at the right shop, but either I'm conflating several patterns or they haven't got it anymore.

So yesterday I ended up just googling 'fabric shops' and started from the top. Eventually I got to one that said on it's front page, "We've got the things the others haven't got." I was starting to feel a bit cynical at that point, but fine, I'd have one more look before bedtime.

Two, maybe three candidates! They really DO have the stuff they others haven't! AND you could order swatches! None of the other shops seemed to do that that I could tell.
angrboda: Viking style dragon head finial against a blue sky (Default)
Hole digging has commenced! I have a picture of some bare soil over on my pillowfort.

Husband helped me measure out the area and strimmed the long grass for me first (to the best of his ability. Conditions weren't very good for it), but I did all the digging myself. I have made a small start at digging it over the first time just to see how difficult that was going to be compared to lifting the turf, and the answer is A Lot Easier! Thank Cat for that! I'm glad I chose the bed for 5 square meters and not 10! As you can tell, the lawn has been wild on purpose for years, which didn't make it any easier.

I ordered the plants in a hurry yesterday, because I saw the bed I actually wanted had sold out, so I've wound up with my second choice. This one is mixed plants for biodiversity rather than native for pollinators, but to be honest, I can't think that there can be that big a difference. Doesn't really make that big a difference for me anyway.

Husband has rewarded me with a cup of tea (I'm weirdly thirsty this afternoon for some reason!) and I'm rewarding myself with a bit of Stardew Valley, which feels appropriate.
