I'm confused... help?
Oct. 8th, 2011 08:24 pmSo, the BBC TV series, Merlin. Something bothers me. Well, no... many things, really, but there's one thing in particular.
Angel Coulby, who plays Guinevere... I'm curious, and I need a straw poll of other people's opinions, because I've never really watched this show and a five-second internet search didn't turn up any answers to my question. Basically: is it an intentional in-joke to cast a mixed-race actor as a character whose name - linguistically speaking - effectively translates as 'Blondie'?1
Or is this an obscure enough point of etymological contention that it's generally assumed a) it's fine and b) nobody cares, stfu anna?
( More wurbling this way. Sorry. )
So, the lovely
rhiyah has been looking over some of my deathless prose, and slapped me upside the head about using the word 'fortnight' in US English (for which I was very grateful, because I always forget about that one). It also set me wondering: where the hell did that word come from anyway?
( Etymologists do it verbosely, with a greater number of archaic terms than are truly required to accomplish the endeavour. )
