A disgusting new iOS app called "Peekaboo T*****y" was brought to my attention earlier this evening via Twitter. As [livejournal.com profile] solarbird explains in this amplification post, it's alarming that this app has been made available because Apple exerts editorial control over the iTunes Store, and that means that someone at Apple has approved of this.

I don't think I need to explain to anyone reading why something called "Peekaboo T****y" is intolerable. The very name is a slur, and it's the sort of dehumanizing, othering rhetoric (in the guise of "humor") that ultimately leads to violence, something that trans women are at an extraordinarily high risk of. We can see that the makers of the app think that they're at the pinnacle of humor, and don't even understand who it is that they're targeting; on their Twitter feed they have made an effort to garner the attention of comedienne Sarah Silverman by asking her "you like gay shit, right?"

Apparently the phone number in [livejournal.com profile] solarbird's post goes to Apple PR which only talks to journalists. I'm going to attempt to call tomorrow as the "editor" of the [community profile] iapps community here on DW to see what light I can shed on this crap.

I pulled the app up in the iTunes Store on my computer and couldn't find a link to provide any sort of feedback to Apple about the app outside of the ratings system, I'd rather not have to get into the whole ratings thing in order to quash this, though. If anyone knows of any formal complaint channels, please let me know.

Meanwhile, please feel free to link, to signalboost, to call, e-mail, etc. (Especially if you're an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad user, we're their consumer base, we need to let them know what we think.)

See, I don't agree that they censor the App store in the first place, BUT I agree that since they're doing the censoring anyway, they SHOULD get it right, and not let things like this slip through.

Yes, I agree, and said as much in my complaint, that iTunes is not a "free market" to start with.

Yes. And it kind of makes Apple responsible. Not for the app being what it is, but for that app being in their store, and thus assumedly approved by them.

(that icon is kind of scary, with the raised eyebrow and the intense stare *G*)

Well, scary is probably too strong a word, it's early, my vocabulary is not quite booted up yet.

But it looks very... determined! *G*

That's true! Nothing wrong with that, to the contrary :)

I used the "Provide iTunes feedback" link to complain about it.
In iTunes, click on "iTunes" in the upper left and select "Provide iTunes feedback" from the menu.
It will take you to a complaint form to fill in.

I just filed a complaint at iTunes Australia via 'Provide iTunes Feedback', and I quoted part of the ToS about apps that cause harm or endanger others.

Grr. The stupid and the thoughtless, they are both thick on the ground today.

For anyone in the UK, the link to the UK iTunes version.

I'm using the Feedback page for iTunes, as I've been unable to find a suitable UK number to complain too.
