A disgusting new iOS app called "Peekaboo T*****y" was brought to my attention earlier this evening via Twitter. As
solarbird explains in this amplification post, it's alarming that this app has been made available because Apple exerts editorial control over the iTunes Store, and that means that someone at Apple has approved of this.
I don't think I need to explain to anyone reading why something called "Peekaboo T****y" is intolerable. The very name is a slur, and it's the sort of dehumanizing, othering rhetoric (in the guise of "humor") that ultimately leads to violence, something that trans women are at an extraordinarily high risk of. We can see that the makers of the app think that they're at the pinnacle of humor, and don't even understand who it is that they're targeting; on their Twitter feed they have made an effort to garner the attention of comedienne Sarah Silverman by asking her "you like gay shit, right?"
Apparently the phone number in
solarbird's post goes to Apple PR which only talks to journalists. I'm going to attempt to call tomorrow as the "editor" of the
iapps community here on DW to see what light I can shed on this crap.
I pulled the app up in the iTunes Store on my computer and couldn't find a link to provide any sort of feedback to Apple about the app outside of the ratings system, I'd rather not have to get into the whole ratings thing in order to quash this, though. If anyone knows of any formal complaint channels, please let me know.
Meanwhile, please feel free to link, to signalboost, to call, e-mail, etc. (Especially if you're an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad user, we're their consumer base, we need to let them know what we think.)

It will take you to a complaint form to fill in.
