An eventful week that left me more exhausted than I probably should’ve been. It was fun though. School on Monday, Wednesday and Friday but Tuesday I went to see Survival Guide (Emily Whitehurst) at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall where I’d seen SrvvlGd a couple times before and once had way too much to drink…It was a Tuesday night so fairly low-key, intimate you might say. I didn’t know what to expect from Krishan Abeyatunge who opened the show or MRCH who closed but I rather enjoyed each. MRCH covered “Heart of Glass”–cool.
It was good to see SrvvlGd live again, this was the first time I’d seen her in quite a while. Fun stuff like her “casual goth” look, working with a new piece of equipment and of course the songs which are obviously kind of the point. They were echoing in my head for days after.

SrvvlGd!..Blurry!
Wednesday brought a package–ink which means I can use my fountain pen again as well as a new pen–exciting?
Thursday was a long one with a morning stop in at CCSF where I saw Avotcja and Modúpue who were amazing. Jazz and poetry, something I’ve seen plenty at the Word Party but this was different, its own thing, more eclectic I think, great stuff.
…Followed by…work on an essay, my brain shutting down, wind through the trees, beautiful though chilly.
Then Voz Sin Tinta that evening. I was early and browsed a bit and found “The Red Shoes” by David Meltzer who died recently. I once had the privilege of hearing him recite that poem in the open mic at Bird and Beckett (and then I followed him–yikes). That was one of those times you see someone show I complete mastery of the form, of language, of speech, he was incredible that night.
Voz itself was great as usual, interesting and emotional and fun. The features–Emily Pinkerton, Shelley Wong and Gavin Page Townsley–as well as the open mic readers were awesome as were the usual folks.
(Ed…and now I just talk about me…)
I read in the open mic too. I felt kind of compelled to read a piece of “A Sword in a Cloud of Light” and then I read a new poem, part of The Book of…though I left out its epigraph and the ending, not entirely sure why or when I’ll read the rest of that but that was its debut and it was nice to get it out there.
Finally, had a drink with friends from Voz, something I hadn’t really planned on and something that was actually kind of ill-advised since I still had to finish that essay and was going to get up early but…heck, it was a good time. We had fries, friend pushed the mustard with fries thing…which actually wasn’t bad though I only had the one.
Then home, then back to school where I finally finished that essay, relief (it was long gestating) by the time I was back home I found it odd to finally be able to not think about that essay, to be able to watch something else or watch TV. Anyway, a good week all and all…speaking of long gestating it feels like it’s taken me about a week to write this–this is why I don’t blog more often! (+ laziness, lethargy etc.)
