Lua Obfuscator

Obfuscate Lua and Roblox Luau code online for free. Our Lua obfuscator renames variables, encodes or encrypts strings, removes comments, and minifies whitespace so your scripts are hard to read and copy. Choose Light for speed or Strong for encrypted strings.

Obfuscate Lua Code
Paste your Lua code or upload a .lua file to obfuscate it. Renames variables, encodes strings, removes comments, and flattens whitespace to protect your source code.
Protection level

Light: short local names, strings as string.char(...), no comments or formatting. Stops casual reading and copying, but deobfuscation tools can read it back quickly.

Common Use Cases for Lua Obfuscator

Game Script Protection

Protect Lua game scripts for Roblox, Love2D, Corona SDK, Defold, and other Lua-powered game engines. Make it much harder for players and competitors to read, copy, or modify your game logic and mechanics.

Plugin & Addon Distribution

Distribute obfuscated Lua plugins and addons for World of Warcraft, Garry's Mod, and other platforms. Protect your commercial or proprietary addon code from unauthorized copying and redistribution.

Intellectual Property Protection

Safeguard proprietary algorithms, business logic, and trade secrets in Lua code before sharing it with clients, contractors, or third parties. Makes reverse engineering significantly more difficult.

License Enforcement

Add a layer of protection for commercially licensed Lua scripts and modules. Obfuscation makes it harder to bypass licensing checks or extract and resell your proprietary code.

Shared Script Bundles

Hand out OpenResty, Nginx or game-server Lua bundles without exposing readable routing and business logic. Keep secrets such as API keys out of the code: obfuscation hides structure, not credentials.

IoT & Embedded Deployment

Protect Lua firmware and scripts running on NodeMCU, ESP8266, and ESP32 devices. Obfuscated code on embedded devices helps prevent competitors from cloning your IoT product logic.

Understanding Lua Obfuscation & Source Protection

What is a Lua Obfuscator?

A lua obfuscator rewrites Lua source code into a form that is hard to read but behaves exactly like the original. Using a lua obfuscator online deters casual readers and copy-pasters from taking or modifying your scripts.

This tool applies these transformations:

  • Local Variable Renaming: local variables, local functions, parameters and loop variables get short, meaningless names (e.g. _a, _b). Renaming follows Lua scoping, so globals, table fields and method names keep working.
  • String Encoding: text strings become byte lists (e.g. "hello" becomes string.char(104,101,108,108,111)), or with the Strong level, entries in an encrypted pool decoded at run time, so they cannot be found with a text search.
  • Comment Removal: comments that explain the code are stripped. Roblox --!strict, --!native and --!optimize directives at the top are kept.
  • Whitespace Minification: indentation and line breaks are removed, so the script is one dense block.

Light and Strong Protection

Light is the fast, compact default. It stops casual reading, but deobfuscation tools can read it back quickly. Strong also encrypts every string with its own key into a pool that the script decodes when it runs, and hides whole numbers in arithmetic, so none of your text or constants appear in the file. Strong output is larger and starts slightly slower. Both levels use only standard Lua, so the output runs on Lua 5.1 to 5.4 and in Roblox Luau.

Roblox Luau Support

Modern Roblox code is understood: type annotations, type and export type aliases, generics, :: casts, if-then-else expressions, string interpolation, compound assignments such as +=, continue, and 0b or 1_000 numbers. Types are never changed, and variables inside interpolated strings are renamed along with the rest of the script.

What Obfuscation Can and Cannot Do

When you obfuscate lua scripts you are not encrypting them: the result is ordinary Lua that any Lua VM runs immediately, and everything needed to run it is in the file. Obfuscation raises the effort needed to understand and copy your code; it cannot make reverse engineering impossible. Commercial virtual-machine obfuscators such as Luraph go further by compiling code to custom bytecode. Never put secrets such as API keys or passwords in client-side scripts, obfuscated or not.

How to Obfuscate Lua Code Safely: Best Practices

  1. Never Overwrite Originals: keep your clean, readable source code in a private version control system (e.g. Git). Obfuscated code is not meant to be maintained or debugged.
  2. Test Obfuscated Builds: the transformations are designed and tested to keep behaviour identical, but always run your obfuscated scripts in a test environment before pushing them to production.
  3. Keep Secrets on the Server: anything a client can run, a determined user can inspect. Validate important actions on the server instead of trusting client code.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Lua Obfuscator

A Lua obfuscator rewrites Lua source code so that it is hard to read but runs exactly the same. This one renames local variables, encodes or encrypts strings, removes comments and minifies the code, entirely in your browser. It deters casual reading and copy-pasting; like every Lua obfuscator, it cannot make code impossible to reverse.

Light renames locals to short names (_a, _b), writes strings as string.char(...) byte lists, removes comments and minifies the code. The output is compact and fast, but deobfuscation tools can read it back in seconds. Strong adds an encrypted string pool that is decoded at run time (every string has its own key) and hides whole numbers in arithmetic, so the text and numbers of your script no longer appear in the file. Strong output is larger and starts slightly slower.

It should not. Renaming follows Lua scoping rules: only local variables, parameters and loop variables are renamed, while globals, table fields, methods and table keys keep their names. Encoded strings produce exactly the same bytes. The transformations are tested by running original and obfuscated programs in a real Lua VM and comparing their output. Still, test the obfuscated script before you ship it.

Yes. Type annotations, type aliases and export type, generics, :: casts, if-then-else expressions, string interpolation, compound assignments such as +=, continue, and 0b or 1_000 numbers are all understood. Types are left untouched (strings inside types stay literal), variables inside interpolated strings are renamed, and --!strict, --!native and --!optimize directives at the top of the script are kept. The Strong preset only uses arithmetic that behaves the same in Luau and standard Lua.

Yes, to a degree, and that is true of every Lua obfuscator. Light output can be read back almost completely by tools such as our Lua Deobfuscator Helper, except the original local names and comments, which are gone for good. Strong output takes much more effort. Commercial virtual-machine obfuscators such as Luraph or MoonSec go further by compiling the code to custom bytecode. Never rely on obfuscation to hide secrets such as API keys or passwords.

No. All processing runs in your browser using JavaScript, and your code never leaves your device.

No. Obfuscated code runs directly in any Lua VM. Even the encrypted strings of the Strong preset ship together with their decoder, so a determined analyst can recover them. Obfuscation slows people down; it does not lock the code.

Yes. Only local names change. Global variables, the keys of returned module tables, require() calls and method names stay the same, so other scripts can keep using the module.

Yes. It is free to use, needs no sign-up, and the tool sets no file size limit.

Yes. Keep the readable original in version control and obfuscate only the copy you distribute. Obfuscated code is not meant to be edited or debugged.
