#54 ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ROOTS - Brooklyn, New York 2013 (Flac)

Elvis Costello and The Roots
Brooklyn Bowl
Brooklyn, NY, USA
16 September 2013

"At the very end of Elvis Costello and the Roots' show at Brooklyn Bowl on Monday night, Questlove thanked the crowd for supporting the "strange experiment" that is their just-released collaborative album, Wise Up Ghost. What's actually most surprising about that experiment is that it actually works.

On paper, the marriage of Costello's singer-songwritery, professorial erudition and the Roots' greasy grooves seems like a well-intended but painfully incongruous marriage. But Costello and Questlove are kindred spirits, two genius-level music geeks who not only have a deep knowledge of and appreciation for multiple genres of music, they're both restless musicians with Olympian work ethics who revel in challenging themselves. Over his 35-odd-year career, Costello has worked with everyone from Tony Bennett to Bajofondo, from Brian Eno to Burt Bacharach, from Billie Joe Armstrong to the Brodsky String Quartet (and those are just the "B"s); the Roots have backed a staggeringly diverse collection of performers nearly every weeknight during their four years as the house band on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

On the album and in this apparently one-off show (apart from two appearances on Fallon this week), the unlikely alliance — the Questello Show, if you will — finds its main common ground in the '60s and '70s soul and funk that both acts often reference in their music: Motown, Stax, the Meters, Philly Soul. And rather than using his more familiar reedy singing voice, Costello inhabits a smoky lower register that often slips into a sinewy sneer, and occasionally a polysyllabic chant that's not worlds away from rapping. The most dramatic example of the latter comes in "Stick Your Tongue Out," a supple reinvention of Costello's 30-year-old anti-Thatcherite broadside "Pills and Soap" that meshes that song's bitter lyrics with a sensuous midtempo groove, making for some deliciously cognitive dissonance. At different points in the set, Marisol Hernandez (of La Santa Cecilia) and Diane Birch harmonized with him, bringing some welcome diversity to the vocal palette.

The group did not phone this gig in: On Monday afternoon Twitter hummed with reports about unnamed chestnuts the group was banging into shape during a rigorous rehearsal, and the evening's 16-song set was tight and supple, leaning heavily on the album but also featuring several Costello hits ("Watching the Detectives," "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea" and "Pump It Up"), deep cuts ("Shabby Doll," "Spooky Girlfriend," an extended "I Want You"), and two startling covers: "Ghost Town," the 1981 chart topping single from the Specials, the legendary British ska band whose debut LP was Costello's first major outside production job; and John Lennon's "I Found Out," which closed the night on a dark but raucous note.

Through it all, Costello coaxed funky chords and howling feedback out of his vintage Fender Jazzmaster — the one with his name written in abalone across the fretboard — trading spiky licks with guitarist Captain Kirk Douglas. And the Roots were the Roots, which is to say just about the greatest band in the entire world. As they've proven time and time again on Fallon, the group has the ability unobtrusively to take an artist out of his or her element, get them out of their own way, enhance strengths the performer may not have realized they had — and have so much fun doing it they forget their usual, more serious selves. And by taking the time to let this collaboration marinate, with Wise Up Ghost the Roots have helped Costello sound more vital than he has in years." source 'Spin' - Jem Aswad

#22 ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS - Berkeley, California 1978 (Flac)

There are numerous early Costello recordings available in great quality. Of the three KSAN pre-fm recordings I have this is easily the best.

Here it again for anyone who wasn't around in 2005-2006. These are the original flac files except I've split off two long-ish encore breaks (1:24 and 2:36) into separate tracks.

#80 RADIOHEAD - Bonnaroo Festival 2006 (Flac)

Bonnaroo Music Festival,
Manchester, TN.
June 17, 2006

Radiohead’s North American tour in June 2006 comprised of nineteen shows, fifteen throughout six US states; Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Illinois and California. Four Canadian dates were shared between Toronto and Montreal. The tour was sandwiched between two European legs that had begun in May and would recommence in August. Bonnaroo situated on a 700-acre farm took place over three days in mid-June. The group headlined the What Stage on Saturday night, their only US festival appearance.

An epic headlining performance by Radiohead. The band debuted half of the songs that would appear on their next album ‘In Rainbows’ released in 2007. Since the inception of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in 2002, it has steadily grown in stature and is now amongst the upper echelon of festivals in the USA. Other bands on the 2006 bill included: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello & the Imposters feat. Allen Toussaint, Beck, Buddy Guy, Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley, Dr. John and Sonic Youth.

In an interview by the BBC’s Radio 6Music digital station, Thom Yorke described the show as “My favourite gig for years and years and years.” and for 'Rolling Stone' magazine  "When we played Bonnaroo we got such a nice vibe, a genuine good feeling from the first beat. Things like Bonnaroo give you hope... I met Phish, most of their people are involved in Bonnaroo. And it's great. I dream to take some of that vibe and take it around the country."

A show that is considered by many, to be Radiohead’s best live performance, this two and a half hour set was generally agreed upon as the highlight of Bonnaroo 2006.

The mixing of the recording was done by Paul Phipps, who said, via RadioheadBonnaroo.com:

“It's hard to believe this was over 5 years ago, but a friend of mine was running sound that night. He snagged the 2-track master from the board and handed the raw WAV over to me. I felt like I scored the mix of a lifetime. I've spent twenty years behind mixing consoles and mastering is one of my fortes, so I couldn't wait to pull the best out of this one.

After two months of wrangling, I finally came up with a mix that I loved. Everything is crystal clear. I have heard every "official" Radiohead live release and none of them sound this clear. After 5 years of keeping this to myself, I had a talk with my friend and he gave me to the OK to go ahead and release this to the public on the 5th anniversary of this awesome show.

I really tried to focus the attention on the individuals, breaking it apart so you can hear everyone. The show improves as it goes, with the first couple songs being a bit rough, they settle in and the last ten songs are completely spot on and wonderful.

The arrangement to Bodysnatchers is a bit different from the album version. You can tell they were still working on it. This is the best Radiohead live recording you will ever hear. Quality. Performance. It's all here.My personal favorite from this show is Videotape. I like this version over the album version so much more. So passionate. Just amazing.”

Mastered by Paul Phipps. Paul also develops music apps for Android under the company name Semzo Multimedia.

Setlist:
01. There There
02. 2+2=5

Bootlegs of the Year 2015-2025

8th Edition including 2025

This document was first compiled in 2015 after I received numerous emails, enquiring as to where bootlegs #1-100 posted on site, could be found. (many of the links were lost in 2016, see Downloads box on top right-hand side panel).

This latest edition (the eighth) includes 326 bootlegs, the best I have downloaded since 2015. The 192-page book will point you in the right direction, in finding the sites I have used and most importantly the web addresses where they can be located.
Although it concentrates on the best bootlegs I have downloaded in the last eleven years, the same websites and addresses noted in the book, are where the majority of the bootlegs in the 100 Greatest listing originated from. The posts #1 to #100 were mostly made from downloads prior to 2015.

I have re-edited the document. The New Order & Television/Tom Verlaine boots have been edited into more readable sections, the best have been featured and further information for the keenest fans of these bands has been included. I have dropped some bootlegs that have now been officially released, especially those that have much superior sound quality on their official releases, e.g. David Bowie - Jazz Festival, Montreux, 2002.

To sum up, I have included the best bootlegs I have downloaded in the preceding years, 2015 to 2025. Having discarded numerous titles, these are the best from that time frame.

I have not provided a sound quality rating as virtually all are of sufficient high quality to rate around 5 out of 5, some are worthy of 5+ like the best official releases.

As you can imagine, it took some time and effort to pull this all together. What to include and just as importantly what to leave out, has taken considerable thought and listening hours, enjoyable nonetheless. So if you are a fan of any of the artists featured, then I can confidently state that you will definitely enjoy the bootlegs that have been chosen.

If you would like a copy of this document, it's only £6 GBP via the donate button (see the top right-hand bar - above blog archive). You do not need a paypal account.

Included in the main body of the text of the document are details of the 326 bootlegs downloaded, and where to find them by the following artists:

      #127 BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS - Paul's Mall, Boston 1975 (Flac)

The greatest bootlegs listing continues after the recent break for the special posts sequence (most had been previously available, albeit briefly.)
I have another sequence that includes radio sessions and live shows from Elvis Costello & The Roots, Johnny Marr, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Sonic Youth and the Afghan Whigs that have not been available on the blog before. These will appear in the coming summer months.

      Bob Marley & The Wailers
      Paul's Mall, Boston, MA
      June 25, 1975

The 'legendary' Lyceum show in July dominates the 1975 tour, recordings of both dates are now available on official release. In bootleg circles the recordings from the Quiet Knight club in Chicago and the Boarding House in San Francisco provide an unofficial perfect representation of the tour. This upgraded source from Paul's Mall can now be added to those two shows.

A consequence of the Wailer's growing popularity and fame enabled the quantity of live recordings to increase markedly for each subsequent tour. More in-depth information about the tour dates and set lists became available.

After a warm up show in Miami, the tour began with a trip over the border to Massey Hall, Toronto in Ontario, Canada; early dates in June then covered the north eastern states of the USA. After a seven day consecutive run at Paul's Mall in Boston, the tour broke for a few days with some much needed rest and the inevitable travelling time for the remaining dates on the west coast.
Ten consecutive days in California followed, beginning on July 4 with a four-night stand at the Boarding House in San Francisco. One night at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland followed before finishing this North American leg with a five night run at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles.  Only four days later, the group were in London for the previously mentioned Lyceum shows. One show followed in Birmingham before finishing this short visit to England in Manchester on July 20.

Paul’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop, located on Boylston Street, was a popular venue from it’s opening in 1963 until it closed in 1978. Bob Marley and the Wailers played there for 7 consecutive nights, from June 23-29, 1975.  Each show had 350 people in attendance and tickets were priced at $7.00.

I've heard a few versions of this in the past and prior to hearing this, the best was the 24-bit Dubwise source. This is an upgrade to that, despite a few small flaws; a tiny cut after a minute and an area of tape damage during "Get Up Stand Up" but only for a few seconds.

      Set list:
      01. Trench Town Rock
      02. Concrete Jungle
      03. Rebel Music
      04. No Woman No Cry
      05. Natty Dread
      06. Get Up Stand Up
      07. Kinky Reggae
      08. Stir It Up
      09. I Shot The Sheriff

A former bootleg record dealer left a comment on the Rolling Stones post live at Oakland Coliseum 1969. I asked him if he would like to share some memories of his former employment and he has agreed to do so. I’m sure many blog readers will be interested in how bootlegs were distributed and sold before the arrival of the Internet enabled us all to gain access to a world of free unreleased music.
He wishes to remain anonymous so I would just like to say many, many thanks ‘Anon’ for your contribution and taking the time to write the following:

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I have been asked by `thebasement67` to give a few recollections about being a Record and Bootleg dealer in the U.K.  Don`t `Flame` me if I get some details wrong…can you remember what you did 30 years ago?

In the early 60`s in the U.K. record shops sold Classical and Light Orchestral music, Novelty records and Sheet music...`POP` music records were few and far between.

The only opportunity for us `Teenagers` to listen to `POP` music was late at night on a transistor radio tuned into `Radio Luxemburg` fading in and out as you tried to get a signal.

Then a friend lent me an album called `Freewheelin` by a `Folk Singer` named Bob Dylan …and I was hooked.

A few years later my record collection Jazz, Prog, Blues, Rock, Folk, Beat, Soul etc., had grown so large that I needed to have a clear out, and a friend told me of a sale he had heard of where people gathered to trade and sell records…this was my introduction to the wonderful world of Record Fairs.

Over the next few years I gained Knowledge and developed contacts in the trade, so that when the first Bootleg albums came along I was well placed to start to trade.

The first albums that I recall being available were `The Great White Wonder` by Bob Dylan, and  `H-Bomb` by Deep Purple, though Led Zep, The Who and The Rolling Stones were also well represented, strangely I don`t recall any Beatles bootlegs at this time. The covers were just plain white cardboard sleeves, with in many cases the titles just handwritten or stamped on the sleeve. Later black and white printed covers were just glued onto the cardboard.

I still have my treasured copy of `Electrif Lycanthrope` by Little Feat (the `F` in electrif is not my error, it was a typo at the printers and they had to use it), This must surely rate as one of the best boots ever, (Reputedly mixed by Lowell George himself), The almost `whispered` version of `Willin` is spine tingling, and knocks spots off any commercial version.

Dylan`s `Little White Wonders` Vol. 1 /2 /3 Notable for the unissued tracks of `Dusty Old Fairgrounds` and `Angelina` were much in evidence, thought these were mainly imports from Italy on the `Joker` label.

When it came to labels `Trade mark of Quality` and `Swinging Pig` were the ones to go for as they were usually of good quality.

From this period Bruce Springsteen`s `You can trust Your Car to the Man Who Wears the Star` (Texaco service staff wear a Star on their caps), was by far the biggest seller and fabulous quality, also Elvis Costello`s `Live at the El Mocambo` was better than any of his official albums. Later Prince`s `Black Album` would break all sale records, reputedly selling over 500,000 copies! (In the video for `Alphabet Street` there are letters falling from the sky, if you paused the video at the right place the letters read `Don`t Buy the Black Album`!”

To be able to deal in Bootlegs you first had to find a supplier…..This was like asking Al Capone if he had any jobs going!  Finding a supplier was hard enough, but you then had to convince them that you could keep your mouth shut, and you had lots of cash to buy in bulk, The Masons, MI5, and the Magic Circle were easier to get into!

I recall meeting a contact in the dead of night at a service station on the M1 Motorway to take delivery of my order. Many deals were done behind the skips at the rear of Hotels.

You always had to be wary of being raided by the BPI (British Phonograph Industry) there was always a danger of having all your expensive stock confiscated, placed in plastic bags and taken away, and then you were threatened by court action and a VERY large fine. I saw this happen several times, but luckily not to me, as I did not do the London Fairs, or open markets (Camden Lock). The thing was that the BPI did not have a clue as to what a `Bootleg` actually was! and so they would take anything , they were unable to understand the difference between a `Pirate` album and a `Bootleg` album, no one in the business would ever Pirate an official album.

As far as we were concerned the only `Criminal` action here was the fact that the record companies were content to sit on unissued tracks for years with no intention of ever releasing them to the fans, ( Dylan`s `Blind Willie McTell` ) it was not until the advent of the Internet when their sales plummeted, and they were forced to find another way of generating sales ,that they realised that the true fan would have bought ALL the official albums anyway, and they needed to provide more.

The organizers of the fairs had `Fits` about Bootlegs being sold and often put an outright ban on the sale of any item that might not be legitimate, this was got around by selling from lists on the stall (Lists could be moved quickly!) But this was never satisfactory and the Bootlegs soon appeared again.

Originally most of the Bootlegs were pressed in Belgium and Luxemburg, but later as the covers became more elaborate production moved to the Far East.

As the production values increased the `pride in quality` aspect of Bootlegs fell by the wayside and the record fairs were flooded with poor quality Boots with elaborate covers, and awful quality `Audio tapes` and `Videos`. This was about the time of the `Goth` and `New Romantic` era, which had no interest for me.

Nowadays the Internet has almost put an end to Record fairs, and the `Product` has diversified with so many `Indie` and home produced bands doing their own thing, that the great `Classic` bootlegs are hard to discover, which is why it is important that Blogs like `100GreatestBootlegs` exist to point the way."

BEASTIE BOYS - Saul's Boutique (Flac)

An amazing spell of great weather has finally broken here in the UK. It has provided the opportunity to work on a new post and get it shared to all like minded music lovers out there in the blogosphere.

There haven't been any hip-hop posts on the blog (apart from the Costello/Roots collaboration, not because I don't like the music, far from it, but mainly due to a lack of high quality bootlegs in my collection. This is one all hip-hop heads should enjoy as well as fans of 70's soul and funk.

      Beastie Boys - Saul's Boutique

      Original Uploader's Notes:
"The quick and to the point version is this is a collection of instrumental versions of the tracks from the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique album. They were primarily sourced from the vinyl intended to be used for their live tour circa 1989, though that tour did not happen as planned and the vinyl went mostly unused, eventually falling into the hands of collectors.

There are several versions of the instrumentals from Paul's Boutique around, but most are either mp3 sourced or very low quality. Unless there is an official release of these instrumentals, this will probably be the best quality version available, period.

There are some small patches where there were skips and jumps that were unable to be repaired, but you probably won't notice them unless you're really into digging for such detail. Seriously, I think I covered them up pretty good. Also, the name is from Saul's Boutique having been written in sharpie on the label of one of the show vinyls.

This is a project I did with some friends. One of those friends would like to remain anonymous, but they generously provided the raw audio. The other friend is Harvey Cliff, artist and all-around awesome guy, who did the artwork and handled the physical packaging. Myself, I cleaned-up the audio a bit, edited it, sequenced and pseudo-mastered it. We had some professionally manufactured cassettes made that we gave to friends and intend to give copies of to the remaining Beasties and the Dust Brothers.

Notes about the original album released in 1989

"The Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique was a masterpiece in sampling, and an album that could never be made in the same way again. Created during the golden age of sampling – that is, before stricter copyright laws were enforced – it epitomised the times. Alongside 3 Feet High & Rising by De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory, Paul’s Boutique marked a change in hip-hop, towards the D.A.I.S.Y. Age of rap music you could dance to.

At the time of its release Paul’s Boutique was a relative commercial dud for the Beasties, given that the success of Licensed To Ill had taken the trio from middle-class punk kids to rap poster boys overnight. In Licensed To Ill the Beastie Boys came to disturb the peace, at least for the white, middle-American music market Def Jam were looking to break into. They succeeded in that. “I’m real mad at the Beastie Boys, they definitely messed up a lot of things for me,” said LL Cool J in a 1987 interview. But the Licensed To Ill formula was not built to last. You can only play the teenage rebels for so long.

Anything from “100 to 300” samples lie within Paul’s Boutique according to one of its creators, Mike Simpson of The Dust Brothers. With production partner John King the duo crafted Paul’s Boutique from their LA studio armed with an MPC and a near-encyclopaedic knowledge of funk, soul, rock, rap, jazz and everything in-between. For the Beasties, Paul’s Boutique was their unabashed ode to ’70s funk and bravado, an album as lyrically potent as it was tongue-in-cheek and one that helped set the tone for rap music throughout the ‘90s."

I’ve included one example for the track ‘Shake Your Rump’ of the kind of information that is included on the site.

      track 2. ‘Shake Your Rump’

Sample: Alphonse Mouzon - ‘Funky Snakefoot’ from Funky Snakefoot (Blue Note, 1974)

As one of the most underrated breaks in sampling Alphonse Mouzon’s criminally slept on ‘Funky Snakefoot’ appears only a handful of times in modern day hip-hop. Although Kris Kross’s ‘I Missed the Bus’ didn’t exactly set the world alight, the Mouzon break would become the backbone to one of the Beastie’s most recognisable party anthems ‘Shake Your Rump’.

      • The main drum roll is from “Funky Snakefoot” by Alphonze Mouzon from the 1973 album “Funky Snakefoot”
      • Beat is Harvey Scales’s “Dancing Room Only” from the 1979 album Hot Foot (A Funque Dizco Opera)
      • Additional beats from “Super Mellow” by Paul Humphrey from the album "The Drum Suite"
      • "Shake Your Rump-ah" - from the Unity album by James Brown and Afrika Bambaataa
      • Mostly taken from the "Car Wash" soundtrack by Rose Royce
      • "It's the Joint" - song of same title by Funky 4+1
      • Bong hit
      • ‘Scratch’ heard under "the most packinest", "your belief, chief" and at the end - "Could you be Loved" by Bob Marley
      • "Hoo-ha! Got them all in check." - "8th Wonder" by The Sugarhill Gang
      • Afrika Bambaataa’s, "Jazzy Sensation"
      • Ronnie Laws, "Tell Me Something Good"
      • The sound similar to a straw being pulled through a soft drink lid is an African percussion instrument known as a "cuica" (kwee-kuh). The instrument was originally used in Africa for lion hunting because the sound produced is very similar to a female lion’s roar, thus attracting the male. The cuica’s sound is produced by pulling and pushing a wet cloth on the bamboo stick.
      • The disco call is from Foxy’s "Get Off"
      • After the chorus phrase "Shake Your Rump-a" there is a drum break with synth. The first two run throughs, right before the rap starts again,
      • The concluding drum fill is from "Good Time Bad Times" by Led Zeppelin.
