Games: Pretty much the typical go-tos.

Music: We have seen some great shows. The first was Peaches Cut because Peaches. ) Everything about it: the costumes, the choreography, the energy, was so good. Absolutely phenomenal show. A++ please don't make us wait another three years before you come back again.

The following day we saw Timecop1983 with Bad Dreamers and Brent Michael Woods opening. Woods is very much of the "Richard Marx with an acoustic guitar" mode of mid-80s nostalgia pastiche, which is not my thing per se, but he is very talented at it and thus fun to watch live. Bad Dreamers joined the tour at the last minute when the scheduled opening act was unable to get US visas; I'd been aware of him through his vocals on a bunch of Timecop tracks, and he was just as good live. (And I particularly appreciated his insistence that the venue turn the stage lights off so that he could see the audience despite it's meaning that the audience could not see him.

Timecop1983 was fabulous, as expected. Just a really energetic show that sounded as good or better than the albums live. He was joined by Josh Dally on guitar and vocals as well as a killer live drummer, which really added to the energy (the drummer was clearly having the time of his life), and Dally and Timecop had great onstage chemistry, with Dally providing the garrulous crowd engagement and running commentary, and Timecop the well-timed laconic one-liners. (Dally also graciously handled the very drunk woman in the crowd who kept loudly insisting he go for drinks with her after the show despite the conspicuous wedding band on his hand.)

They played a good selection from their back catalogue as well as some new tracks we weren't familiar with, as well as a few numbers with one or both of Bad Dreamers and Woods on the stage with them. This too was an excellent show and I will certainly see any or all of these acts if they're ever in town again.

Podcasts/Articles: I listened to The Women's Podcast episode The Digital War on Women and How To Fight Back, which was unsurprisingly as horrifying as the title suggests. The panel members were (rightly) so energized about how vile this stuff is that they were unfortunately often not as clear about explaining to the audience what it was they were discussing as one would have wished but they made up for it by explicitly pointing out that the primary solution to all this shit and enshitification is to stop. Just stop. Get off these platforms and go do something else with your time. (That said, how you convince anyone under 15 to do so...)

For long form articles, I read:
Roleplaying: Nothing. The GC is DMing some one shots, but since they're on the days that I am step dancing and I can't be in two places at once, dancing it is 🩰

Television: When the TV's on, pretty much all AEW, all the time. The pendulum is very much swinging back toward Restaurant Quality 😁 these days. Of course, the usual suspects (Hangman, Mox, Young Bucks) are still there with predictable plotlines, but everything going on around them has been great. FTR and Stokely steal the show for every promo and match they're in. You wouldn't necessarily think Brody King vs. Swerve would make sense but it does, and Prince Nana is clearly having the time of his life. The Brawling Birds won me over with the throwback name alone, but they are more than living up to its promise. Jet Speed and Speedball are great. Kyle Fletcher is great. The IInspiration should annoy the living bejeezus out of me but they were hysterical and I wish they'd got five times the screen/ring time, TK please bring them back. Don Callas is as oily and entertaining as ever. The Thunder Rosa vs. Thekla match was fire.

Speaking of wrestling, we also finished out Dimension 20: Titan Takedown group watch, which had a very satisfying (if a bit railroaded, probably due to time constraints) conclusion. Humor, action, lore and iterating in-jokes, and some really affecting emotional character arcs: this is what I want from wrestling and from a D&D game, and this D:20 season had them all in spades. I enjoyed the nostalgia of (most of) The New Day and Bailey, and while I don't watch WWE anymore, it absolutely sold me on Chelsea Green and I hope she makes it over to AEW some day soon.

Video Games: The gaming computer is acting up *sigh* so nothing these past few weeks. We did get Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2, which seems to have inspired divergent takes among the people who've played it, so we'll see.

9. As it’s ‘Check Your Batteries Day’, when was the last time you checked your stock of batteries? Or, do you buy them when you need them?

Hubby checks all of ours every three months. We stock our batteries every ten months. We don't want to find out something doesn't work the hard way.

When and where was the most memorable sunrise or sunset you have ever seen?

My favorite sunsets are here in Tucson. They are absolutely breathtaking. Hubby and I watch them as often as we can. I'm never up in time for sunrise. 😂 We also saw some gorgeous ones on different cruises we went on. Sunsets are so gorgeous. I'm grateful for all of them.

Things I'm Disappointed About

Sometimes I find a new recipe to try and it flops. At first I'm angry that I used money to make something that was so awful. After about ten minutes, I then blame myself for choosing something so gross.

I get disappointed in people that show no compassion for anyone who has to use hearing aids. They lose their temper because they don't want to repeat themselves. I've even seen them yell at the person who has no control over their hearing.

But, the biggest disappointment in people who don't have empathy for the person with dementia, or worse. They have no control over what is happening to them And their family. They need all the Love and caring they can get. Please be thoughtful. A lot of people are.

Honestly the "Drink" prompt did not come to me because of St. Patrick's day but in the fact that I really wanted a female character as the prompt image in honor of Women's month/day, but then it kinda just felt right using the prompt with both communities especially when I saw that image of Emma. I didn't think through the Monthly Character prompts, otherwise I'd have done female characters there as well.

In other news, [community profile] galorechallenge Round 14 is now open! Officially finished uploading all the old prompts. I still need to add new prompts/crossovers since nothing new has appeared, feel free to suggest prompts/crossovers HERE. Still need to make a new promo banner & header but meh, I haven't felt like it honestly.

So it's been awhile since I posted anything directly to here, I apologize for that, but February has oddly been busy? Mostly with work but I also wrote a lot more last month (8 fics/drabbles) which I'm so proud of. I also did something to my right foot (not quite sure if it's my ankle, it feels more like the top of my foot) so I've been dealing with that pain off and on since mid-February. Most of the time I forget about it because my full-time job is mostly a sit down job (and it only vaguely hurt while sitting), and I haven't had a lot of scheduled retail shifts last couple weeks (thankfully for my mental health, horrible for my bank account), but I do have to get up and move around at my full-time job - sometimes a lot so that's when it mostly hits me. I did rest it a lot when I got home from work as well and I rested a lot this weekend (although I did get some cleaning done), so I didn't spend a lot of time online thus my oblivious to the world becoming on fire (I listen to audiobooks at work, and usually on the way to & from work, rarely do I put on the radio and when I did nothing mentioned anything at all - all I noticed was the gas prices shot the fuck up and I'm like why? Found out last night. Yeah. Fuck. The world is on fire. Again/Still depending on your viewpoint.)

ANYWAY due to my offline time, my newest obsession:

the Monsterverse (aka Godzilla 2014 & Kong: Skull Island shared universe along with the TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters). Caught the trailer for Monarch on Prime and I was like sign me the fuck up. I enjoyed every second of it.

Look I've loved Godzilla since I watched Godzilla (1998) and the animated series based on the film - I know most people shit on that movie but I enjoy it. And it satisfied the need for more dinosaur-type stuff I wanted back when I was a kid and in love with the Jurassic Park trilogy (haha, still am). I think the animated series of Godzilla also kind of synched it for me (I have the DVD set for it) and it's still pretty good - I want to rewatch again thanks to Monarch (they share some similarities that probably only I can see and enjoy but I'll take it). I also really enjoyed Godzilla (2014) film, which people also kinda dislike? I think or at least have mixed feelings about? I enjoyed all the sequels as well, and I appreciated what they were as monster movies, but I think Monarch show really kinda synched my love for the universe. I kinda wish I could have showed the show and the other newer movies to my Nana, she loved the original Godzilla stuff and would watch those, I'd love to know what she'd think of the show. I haven't seen those since I was a little kid and I don't remember actually enjoying them? Maybe it was the graphics, maybe it just didn't hold my attention - not quite sure (might try again). Anyway, as much as I loved Aaron Taylor-Johnson & Elizabeth Olsen in Godzilla (2014), I didn't really go looking for fanfiction or other fanworks (maybe gifs on Tumblr) until Monarch. The cast is just so good, and the characters! Ugh, I love all of them and I ship like everyone (as you can see what I've iconed so far). And the fact that they have Kurt & Wyatt Russell playing the same characters but at different points of time - BRILLIANT. I think my favorite characters are probably the "core" main characters: Cate Randa, Corah "May Olowe-Hewitt" Mateo, Kentaro Randa, Keiko Miura, Bill Randa (did not expect to like that character after Kong: Skull Island!) and obviously Lee Shaw.

Also I obviously noticed back when they did Kong: Skull Island, but a lot of Marvel/MCU actors/actresses appeared in the Monsterverse and all it does is making me want them to do a Godzilla/Marvel crossover movie. They won't do it, but there is at least I think a Godzilla/Marvel comics series I think.

It's a small fandom, so there's that... but at least it exists. Anyway, let me know if you like any of the movies or like Monarch! I'd love to hear what you think or who you ship :)

A Reckoning of Swords 67

It has been awhile since I've sorted my swords... February ended up pretty busy and I got behind on a lot of things.

But I've done updates on the Lemonade Cafe, both website and at [community profile] lemonadecafe. Going to try to do a few more before it's time to sleep. There's a very real chance I can finish off January's very full calendar pages and debate how to tackle both February and March's.

I'm still working through my inbox and found a comment from 2022 talking about The Mangar and getting back to it and I did! I finally got back to The Mangar! I went to mention this and ah, the entry is gone. ^^;; This will probably be the case more and more often as I get back to the truly ancient messages. Alas. (After a point I will also find the people and entire sites gone, which will be far more complicated.)

I suppose at some point I will claim true comment amnesty. ^^;;
kalloway: (KoA Siegfried Purify)
[personal profile] kalloway
Ooof, I got incredibly off-course with these and it'll probably take a little while to catch up. ^^;; But here's a start!

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers 1-5 (Katsuyuki Sumizawa, Tomofumi Ogasawara) - I have had all of Glory sitting around for ages and have tried to read it more than once only to repeatedly have Stuff happen. This time, I will grab my swords if Stuff gets in my way. While normally I'm fine with the Sunrise stance of "only animated is canon", this is a firmed up version of the story featuring a lot of amazing redesigns, extra info, etc. Looking forward to reading the rest.

My Love Story!! - anime, since I'd just watched the live action. Honestly, I liked the live action more. I thought the anime was only 12-13 episodes but it's 24 and it really drags in places. It's nice to have the setting and characters filled out, but it really drags in places. Can probably let it go since I can't imagine wanting to watch it again.

Tsukipro The Animation - S1, like with any idol anime, I'm here to listen to the songs as much as anything. One of the guys looks a bit like RS2's Noel so he's automatically my fave. I have S2 waiting in the queue.

Cyborg 009 vs Devilman - this is a lot of fun and a complete mess. Should you watch this if you don't know either franchise? No. Should you watch this if you do? Probably not. But you'll do it anyway, just like I have multiple times now.

The Omen 1-4 - ah, boycritter brought these over because I'd made a comment about never having seen the first one (or being aware of there being more than one, I guess). The first one was pretty good, 2 had me laughing uproariously at the bad special effects, 3 was decent, and 4 was atrocious. Good fun, but more ridiculous than scary and I also feel like 4 forgot half the plot of 3.

Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors - technically the latter since I watched the dub. Absolute fun except for the middle part which I want to edit down with a knife. This is one of those "I have watched good chunks of this in the past but never made it all the way through" shows, and yay, now I have. (Except the OVAs which... I can continue skipping, lol.)

And now, I can't believe I'm watching these before even the halfway point of the viewing period - JFF Theater!

The Lines That Define Me - culture drama about a young man finding healing through sumi-e. Absolutely gorgeous and takes the time to explain sumi-e and demonstrate beautifully without feeling like it's taking away from the plot. Also very tropey, as far as culture dramas seem to go. Definitely recommended if you can watch JFF stuff.

Bonsai Warrior - a documentary about a guy traveling the world teaching and demonstrating bonsai. Interesting watch, worth it also for the information about bonsai practitioners around the world.

Thermae Romae - if you can watch any JFF film this quarter, watch this one. It's fucking hysterical in every way. The gist is that a Roman bathhouse architect is in a slump and ends up magically transported to a modern Japanese bathhouse. This happens again and again, and he experiences all sorts of interesting things (like a bidet, lol) but not really understanding what's happening. At one point, a group of old Japanese men end up in Rome.
(Roman slavery is a fairly prominent concept, however, if you would rather not.)

Ooey gooey snack bars
Ingredients You’ll Need
For the crust:
* 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 large eggs
* 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
* ½ teaspoon baking powder
* ¼ teaspoon salt
For the gooey layer:
* 8 oz cream cheese, softened
* ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
* 2 cups powdered sugar
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 large eggs
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or line it with parchment paper for easier removal later. This ensures your bars come out cleanly and hold their shape.
Step 2: Make the Crust
1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugaruntil light and fluffy.
2. Beat in vanilla extract and eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined. The result should be a slightly sticky, soft dough.
5. Press about two-thirds of this dough evenly into the prepared pan. This will form the base of your ooey gooey bars. Set aside the remaining third for the topping.
Step 3: Prepare the Gooey Layer
3. In another bowl, combine cream cheese and butteruntil smooth and creamy.
5. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing well to eliminate lumps.
7. Beat in vanilla extract and eggs until the mixture is glossy and smooth.

Things I Find Hard To Share

6. Who are the five people you spend the most time with? How does each of them impact your life and behavior?

First, my hubby, second, would be my brother Dan, third, would be my daughter, Chris, fourth, is easy, my friend Lisa, and fifth, my friend Kelly.

My hubby has my back at all times. He calms me when I'm stressed, makes me smile when I need it the most, and makes me happy.

Dan is always there for me. Everyone loves Dan.

Chris makes me laugh, and I'm happy that we raised such a good person.

My two friends would do anything for me. They're both the best.

8. It’s International Women’s Day – can you name any famous female artists, musicians, scientists, or authors?

For all the female scientists, I am grateful for everything you have done through the years. When many people don't believe in science, yet you all carry on. To every female recording artist, thank you for making my life better through music. As far as authors go, I love Maya Angelou’s work. I could read it all day and night. I get her books from the library and read them often. And let's not forget Harper Lee. I've been reading To Kill a Mockingbird once a year for years. And I have to mention Agatha Christie. She's one of my favs. To all female artists, I love so many that I don't know where to start. I'll list a couple that I like. Kara Walker is an artist from the American South. Georgia O’Keeffe, Amy Sherald, Cindy Sherman. These e are just a few. We're very lucky to be surrounded by such talent. I'm going to some art shows next weekend.

There are so many women I didn't mention. It's not because I forgot. Just ran out of time.
