So here's the story:
Wednesday, the 29th was a doctors appointment. At that appointment I was told that I was dilated to a 3.5 and was told to make an appointment for next week, but I probably would not be making it to my appointment (because he thought I would probably go into labor that week). I had been thinking all week how this was the two week mark, and the baby could very easily come this week because that's what Alia did. But I was also thinking, "please don't let the baby come until after Wednesday night's rehearsal." This was going to be a big music rehearsal for the show that I am music directing, and I wanted to make sure that I was there. Well, I was there, but near the end of rehearsal and especially as I was driving home, I started having regular contractions. [Insert funny thing my dad said - I told him about this and he said, "Jonathan is just a theatre baby. He knew when his entrance was supposed to be." Definitely made me laugh.]
So that night my contractions continued, but never got close enough together to worry, and never got hard enough to think I needed to go to the hospital, but I was pretty certain I would be having a baby the next day. I was thinking to myself as I was watching TV at 2 in the morning because the contractions were too much to sleep though, "this is most likely my last night to actually get some sleep before I have the baby, and I don't even get to sleep." We, women, have to go though so much, right? I was finally able to fall asleep around 3 but was then woken up again around 5:30 with some pretty strong contractions. From this point, they just started getting closer together, much stronger, and more painful. But it was doing this very slowly, so I went ahead and sent Nick to work not knowing when we would need to go to the hospital. About 40 minutes after Nick left the house, the contractions were painful enough that I was hunching over furniture and making pained noises. [This was very disconcerting for Alia. She was very concerned about her mom and wanted to give me hugs. Unfortunately that did not help with any of the pain.] So I called Nick, who had only been at work for about 15 minutes and asked him to come home. He called his mom who got to our house to get Alia about the same time that Nick got home, and we headed to the hospital.
Contractions at this point were fluctuating between 5-8 minutes apart so I was really worried that they were going to send me home. But when we got checked out in triage, I had dilated to a 5 and they informed us that we would be having a baby that day! The nurse could see that I was in a lot of pain, and I still had not been checked into a Labor and Delivery room, so she was going to have the anesthesiologist give me the epidural while still in triage before he was unavailable because of a c-section of another patient. I was relieved to know that I would soon have some relief, but then another nurse came over my nurses walkie-talkie and said the c-section had already started and the anesthesiologist would be at least an hour. I was going to fall apart after hearing this. I couldn't wait an hour! The nurse calmed me down and told me she can give me some pain medication through my IV to help curb the pain until I can get the epidural. Oh man was that stuff nice. I was floating around the room, my arms weren't attached to my body anymore, and my head just felt like a cloud. Nick tried to ask me silly questions to get me to say goofy things like in those wisdom teeth recovery videos. It didn't work. I was still present enough to know what I was saying. By the time I got the epidural, I still had this pain medication in my system so the epidural didn't hurt or feel uncomfortable at all. I kept complimenting the anesthesiologist on how good he was before I realized the next day that it was probably the pain meds and not him. Oh well, hopefully I made his day:)
About 3:30 it was time to push. I pushed for almost 15 minutes, then Jonathan was here! I was so happy when they laid him on my chest. He even got to stay there for a while. When Alia was born, she had some breathing problems so she only laid on my chest for maybe 30 seconds before they took her away to help her breath. But Jonathan got to hang out with me for a good 5 minutes. Mess and all:)
Second time motherhood has proved to be a lot better than first-time. Less stress, less pain in breast-feeding, more sleep at the hospital, more happiness at the lack of stress and pain, and faster recovery. Nick and I just could not stop comparing how much nicer it was this time around now that we kinda knew what we were doing. Also, we wised up and let the nursery take Jonathan during the night instead of having him sleep in the room with us.
Now that Jonathan is home, we feel like a complete family. There's something about a family of four versus three. We just feel more complete. Alia has been a wonderful big sister. After being the only child and the only grandchild in state on both sides this girl has been...well loved. Because of this, we really expected a lot of resentment and lashing out, but she has really embraced and accepted Jonathan. She loves to give him kisses, always tells us when Jonathan is sad, helps us get his diapers and wipes, and informs everyone, "No! He eats ONLY MILK." [I made sure to teach this to Alia immediately after coming home to save Jonathan from any fruit snacks or gold fish crackers being shoved in his mouth in an attempt to share. This could be potentially dangerous.]

Jonathan has had his two-week check-up and everything is looking great. He has already gained almost a pound! He is now 9 lbs. 3 oz. He wakes up (normally) at 3:30 am then again at 7:30. And he has done this ever since coming home from the hospital. He just loves his mommy so much he wants her to sleep:) I'm guessing that his size has a lot to do with how well he sleeps. I certainly don't mind that. We have not gotten any smiles yet (well besides the ones while his is sleeping) but I read that we still have a few weeks before he will start to smile at us. I absolutely can't wait for that!

This is one happy family. So happy to have our two spectacular, beautiful, and handsome children. So happy that they are healthy. And so happy that they are ours!
