Confessions

It's not always rainbows and unicorns here in my life. No, really. Recently there has been some trials and disasters. Last week was definitely one of those weeks.

Summary: hurricane, yellowjacket sting emergency with a ride in an ambulance, crabby preschooler, tropical storm, migraine, crabby preschooler. (The crabby preschooler is part of an on-going saga.)

I think it all caught up with me over the weekend, because I had one anxiety attack after another. It didn't help that these weather-related migraines (yes, it's true... look it up) are felt mainly in my face: sinuses and teeth. I have a dental phobia (which is pretty much anything having to do with teeth, especially a fear that they will just fall out of my head for no reason whatsoever [a side note: I've had my teeth checked many times and there's nothing wrong]) and that did NOT help my anxiety. I probably also had a touch of PTSD.

But after all, considering last week, who wouldn't.

There's stuff going on in my life that I'm not able to talk about right now because things need to happen first, and it's all about timing. Plus, just life in general... things I would love to change but can't right now, such as where I live. Then there's the things that just take time and I get impatient, such as finishing my studying. But yes, the stress gets to me at times.

One thing jumps out at me in particular. Something I should be able to change, but am having trouble. (This is where the confession comes in.) I'm a perfectionist. But not a very good one. I'm flawed... more than most people, I assume, but for whatever reason I have this need that things be perfect. Even though I know it's irrational and untrue.... I just can't stop it. (I figure this has everything to do with my childhood and never being able to please a bullying parent... or get her to love me.)

I guess it's just one of those times that I get to the point "can't just one thing go right?!" when my beautiful son acts up. Usually it's the listening thing. Then it escalates to doing ANYTHING right. I don't need to put that on him.... I don't want to stress him out.

No, he doesn't need to be perfect. HE knows that. Why do I need the reminder?!

Danny Destructo

Tropical Storm Danny (last night) actually left more of a mess than the hurricane from last weekend. (Isn't it fun how they are scheduled on the weekend? Nothing rocks my weekend more than a storm-induced migraine which makes me beg anyone (please!) to punch me in the face and knock me out of my misery.) But enough about me.

I'm Glad This Week Is Almost Over

I'm a bit twitchy about going outside now, even though Apma came over and sprayed the life out of those yellowjackets and buried the entrance to their nest. I hope it works. Knock on wood for me. (It really really works. Try it.)

However. I made myself go outside yesterday and got some long-awaited weeding done in my herb garden, so it was like aromatherapy at a retreat. A retreat you can bring your over-tired preschooler to so he can chase toads, grasshoppers and caterpillars, and you can say "don't do that" and "do that" until it feels like your mouth can just fall off. It was nice and relaxing like that.

Oh yeah. And the hurricane brought the cold in, so now it feels like fall. And I got to struggle with setting fire to damp wood in our (((cough!))) wood stove in the basement to take the chill out of the floors. Good times!

But I'm not totally out of cheer this week. While I didn't get pics of the paramedics, ambulance or hospital, I can share some other favorites from the last few weeks. Enjoy!

Since my Casablanca Lilies and Hibiscus didn't try to kill me this week, I don't have the hate on for them. Aren't they pretty? The picture of the lilies was taken during the eye of the hurricane.

Can I just say again how glad I am that he did NOT get stung?!

Isn't this the most adorable thing ever? See his special stirrups? He loves horseback riding!

A Very Long Story About A Very Small Incident

I'm having a hard time coming up with a title for this post. It should probably have something to do with being Accident Prone or a Disaster Waiting to Happen. Or even that I Nearly Died, but thats too dramatic, and possibly untrue. The one I like best is a Walking Calamity. What can I say... it's a work in progress.

I had a super fun day yesterday. It had an interesting plot line, a good cast of characters, movement forward, a lesson learned... or it could have been an episode from Days Of Our Lives... but with much less sex and romance.

I was stung by yellowjackets multiple times yesterday morning. But that's just jumping in, and I need to back up a bit.

Needing stove wood to get through the winter, I called a cousin-in-law to bring firewood. We clear a small area and he dumped the wood behind my house in front of the walkout basement doors. Yesterday morning, while waiting to go to his Nannies's for a Day of Fun and a much-anticipated sleepover with his little cousin, Evan decided now would be a good time to start piling the wood in the basement. I'm going along with my 3 yr old's suggestion because it needs to be done. While out in our tee-shirts we agitated some yellow-jacket nest in the ground by the wood that we didn't even see. Flailing my arms around must have further enraged those nasty little dive-bombers who then came after me.

(Remember in the good old days? Life was simpler then. You got stung by a bee, you passed out. Simple. I'd had wasp stings before.)

Take with me now a little walk through my head as I look at the reactions I experienced during this next weird time in my life.

"Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! What the heck?! Evan!!!!" I run away from the woodpile and grab Evan to take with me.

There is little to no screaming occurring from someone other than me, so I assume he's not stung; I check him over just to be sure. Thank God he didn't get stung. Not even once!

And then I praise him, for listening to mummy and getting away when I told him to; that he heard the danger in my voice and really listened and did what he was supposed to (because every opportunity is a life lesson, right? And you have to catch your child doing something good and praising it).

I'm nothing if not thorough.

We check out the woodpile from a distance, but can't see much. I have to get the wood in the basement eventually, but not with an open wasp nest because those little buggers REALLY hurt. Plan of action: go to Apma's (grandfather's) house to ask him about the yellow-jackets and what to do.

Meanwhile my pinky finger starts swelling (where a stinger lodged in the knuckle) horribly. "Gee, I hope it doesn't get too big and cut off my blood vessels and circulation and end up losing a finger." (Didn't I tell you I was thorough?)

After putting benedryl creme on the stings (4 of them) I took a couple benedryl and we headed out. (When tree planting [in a former life] in Northern Alberta and the Yukon, it was standard procedure to carry benedryl and some little stimulant pill [I forget what it's called] in a tiny pack provided by the company. That's what I was taught. I learned well.) The little finger isn't so little anymore and I'm becoming more concerned, and then a new thought crosses my mind: "I hope I don't get stretch marks on my finger from becoming a small sausage."

Apma checks out the situation and helps make a plan to deal with them for us. I did too: I decided to leave my son with his grandparents early and I would make a plan for seeing a doctor because the swelling and pain (did I mention the pain? the burning hot pokers of hell and destruction stabbing into my hand, arm and leg? Oh. My. God.) are really getting to me.

Somewhere in all this I have a sudden strange compelling itch and find big angry bumps all over my... um... inner thigh and lower stomach area. Okay, okay. On the groin area as well. "What the hell? I wasn't stung THERE!" But I do what I gotta do and spread more benedryl cream on this new wonderful affliction. "Damn! I hope I can still get a bikini wax."

I gather up Evan's clothes for his overnight adventure, but realize I'm getting weirdly shaky. My heart is pounding. I figure driving into town by myself is not the best idea, and get the Apma to agree to drive me in. (Yes, I'm prone to panic, but not usually about things I understand or have thought out. And this all has taken an hour, giving me plenty of time to reason and rationalize and conclude: it's not really that bad. So I'm honestly not panicking.)

Then I realize, "Oh crap. I'm in sweat pants. I can't go to the walk-in clinic in sweat pants!" But then my legs don't really work, things start going dark, and I'm panting. So I do what any normal person would do: I call a friend who's been trained as a volunteer fireman/medical first responder. He tells me to get off the damn phone and call 9-1-1. But my question was really, "Is this just an anxiety attack? Cuz I'm gonna feel dumb about this later!"

He insists.

By now I can't stand up, so I call 9-1-1. Here's when something else weird happened: an EMS vehicle was on it's way back to the next county after transporting an elderly patient to our hospital and just happened to be passing by my road on the highway, about a mile away. We're several miles out of town, and an EMS would normally take a good 15 minutes. I should know. It's happened before.

While I'm still asking the 9-1-1 operator "Is this just an anxiety attack?" I can hear the sirens.

By now I'm lying down because everything is dark and shaky and my chest hurts. "This is some anxiety attack."

The door opens and in comes Apma and his nephew, who is also a volunteer fireman and medical first responder. No, they're not the paramedics... just happened to see the ambulance and think the worst, so came on over. The paramedics are behind them. (Those paramedics are greats guys and gals, and seriously don't get enough credit.)

Next thing I know I've got a stethoscope down my shirt and I hear Paramedic 1 say, "She's wheezing," and pops a mask on my face with the glorious Ventolin. (It's awesome: helps you breathe and makes you just a little high. I think it's my new drug of choice.) Of course I have to ask, "Am I having an anxiety attack?" (I'm starting to get a little obsessed at this point.) "No, you're just having a little reaction."

Paramedic 2 helps me out, as we get ready to go to the hospital, by getting the pull-ups for my son's sleepover party. (Hey, I can multi-task whenever I want to.) And to maintain my last shred of dignity, I insist on walking out to the ambulance. On my way out, my most pressing thought is "Should I bring my laptop and camera? Hmmmm. This might be worth getting some pics of, and it's gonna be boring at the ER.... I should really bring my laptop." But for some reason they're hustling, and I'm a pushover.

We're then in the ambulance driving back to town. "Watch it! Slow down!" P1 yells to P2 as we're bouncing all over the place. "It's okay. It's just our road. It really sucks." I told him. "Nevermind!" he yells back to her.

"Do we have to have the siren on? Please don't turn the siren on!" They're nice enough to comply. "This is so embarrassing." I'm not easily embarrassed, but for some reason medical things are embarrassing, and I hate hate hate the attention. I'm also embarrassed and shamed by physical frailty, I think, and probably why I despise the fibro so much. I probably should have been obsessing about what this is all going to cost, but we recently got on a medical and drug plan, so I let that one go.

Luckily, once I got to the ER I wasn't in for very long. (And bonus: I didn't have to have my shirt cut off me this time.) A couple of hours turnaround. Antihistamines and steroids are offered. I hesitate. The nurse is patient. I'm not sure I want the steroid because I know a side effect is weight gain. But then I figure just one won't hurt. (Isn't this how issues start? With just one? Oh well. Doomed if you do, doomed if you don't.)

At last I leave, a full 4 hours after the first sting. I'm dopey from the antihistamines and still a little high from the (wonderful!) Ventolin. But all that's going through my head is "I had a full day [without Evan] to paint and do fix-up stuff around the house... now it's blown!" Because I figure now is not the best time now to start fiddling with the wiring. Yes, I have to replace a broken light switch. So I called it a wash and decided to take the rest of the day off, which is very difficult for someone who likes to stay busy.

I did a little post-incident research and found, to my very great surprise, that I had 8 of the 10 symptoms of anaphylactic reaction. I did NOT know I was allergic to bees. I now have to carry an epi pen. (Those previous incidents of being stung and passing out were minor reactions, a sign of my body developing an allergy. It's thoughtful that way.)

My thoughts today are pretty much about how much I hate nature. And my body hates me. It's a hate-fest.

(So, what's the morale of the story? When in doubt, take benedryl. Good for any occasion. Except driving and operating large farm equipment.)

Hurricane Aftermath

Hurricane Bill, category 1 with winds up to 130 kph, swept through. A sudden calm descended on us, and I ran outside to take some quick pics. Here's what the sky looked like:

Within a minute, it had changed to this:

Our beautiful 8 foot tall sunflowers didn't fare so well.

I think the wind and rain had an effect on the little person of the house, because he became a whirlwind of activity, eventually gathering up toys and pillows and scattering them around his bedroom. Here is the aftermath of Hurricane Evan:

Two hurricanes in one day. No wonder I'm tired!

Eye Of the Storm

It's hurricane season... and we're expecting one tonight. It's been reported category 4 with caution to evacuate, but has since been downgraded to category 2. It's expected to continue downgrading to tropical storm status by the time it hits the South Shore.

I'm not too worried.

I'm expecting power outages through the night (which is fine with me because I often sleep then, and hopefully won't be aware of it).

We're storing water for drinking and flushing.

We're charging the battery-powered dvd player... just in case.

We have a camping cooker.

We're set.

Here's hoping this is the most we'll see of the storm.

The Reason

I haven't been out here much in the bloggy world lately, and I have a good reason. This:

... and focusing on doing better overall in my life. One thing at a time. (Trying out a new treatment, also, that hopefully will make my fibro a little easier to deal with.)

But, miss you all, too.

The Heat! Oh, the Heat!

I'm feeling the heat... and the fuzzy numb brain that goes along with it. Or, for some weird reason, the "seasonal" allergies that are still here. Isn't that the point of seasonal? Aren't they supposed to go away after a while? Or does the term seasonal refer to lasting the whole fricken season?! Enough already!

It seems everyone is feeling the heat.

The alpacas are probably regretting those fine wool coats about now.

Some are finding ways to beat the heat.

Would you look at that! It works!

Evan Is Talking My Ear Off Again

Oy! Now I feel guilty.

Apparently talking more leads to better learning for children.

Sometimes I just want peace and quiet.

I guess you really can't have your cake and eat it too.

Around The Garden In Which Photographers Grow

I'm playing along with Candid Carrie with her Friday Foto Finish Fiesta. Click on the button below to join the fun.

*************************************************

So this is what we were taking pictures of this week (the photos I took of Evan from Wordless Wednesday). It all started with Evan finding a mushroom, and then the situation, well, mushroomed into a photographing extravaganza.

He insisted on getting in on the action. I think he's a bit like me--he'd rather be behind the camera than the subject. But, unfortunately for him, he's so darn cute and adorable that he's just gonna have to suck it up and model. His life is rough. Don't you feel for him?

In front of our house, with a great view of the neighbour haying.

A view of the church next door, hazily seen through a nice patch of cutgrass. Although it isn't pictured here, it's important to note that this church, like each and every one in this area, comes complete with a cemetery.

Nothing says "welcome home" like a bunch of tombstones beside the house.

Things I Want To Remember

I hope I never forget just how cute Evan is when he says excitedly with his mouth open wide so I can see the broccoli, "Look! I'm eating my begetables!"

Yes, honey, we can see.

And then he'll laugh his butt off and fart.

Technical Difficulties

I currently have a button problem. For weeks now I've been looking for information--that makes sense to me, someone who knows nothing about html or coding--to put a "grab my button" button on my sidebar. I've come far enough that I can do the link, but I can't get the image to show up. Any ideas?

***************

Update: Thanks to this site and this site I've been able to rework and modify the button so that it ((GASP!!!)) works! I've now played around with coding more than I ever have in my life (and I still know nothing about how it works).

I need to lie down now.

Thanks to the awesome help I had today. The internet rocks!

Just as an example to show that Evan hasn't lost his "cute edge", here's a new favorite of mine from one of our many trips to the zoo. This particular day he was very attached to his doll. He calls her "Baby". He fed her and held her and hugged her and kissed, and did all kinds of caretaking things. Most importantly though, he ensured her safety.

He calls himself "Safety Boy". Couldn't you just gobble him up?!

He'd Better Take Up Sports...

Secret Mom Thoughts is hosting Then And Now Thursday, and I'm playing along!

This was Then... last summer at the beach with my Toddler.
Notice the rock in his hand? He likes throwing rocks at the water.
His aim is very good. His strength is good.
BUT, he's still a toddler and still throws like a toddler.
In short, he's adorable.

See the smile on my face? I'm not worried.

******************

This is Now... What? Wait... no picture.

Sorry, but I CAN'T TAKE PICTURES NOW.
I'm too busy chasing my Preschooler (notice the distinction?) around the beach, yelling--yes, yelling--at him to STOP THROWING SAND/ROCKS/DEAD CRABS at people.

His aim is dead on; his arm is stronger than most shot-putters.
(He's had lots of practice, see?)

I'm chasing and yelling because he's full-on in Preschooler mode: WHAT, MOM? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

I'm SO looking forward to what comes next. Tossing people? Small boulders? Large buildings?

.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before.
The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
