Slow start of the mushroom season

After those few days of rain, now we're back to the dry weather again. It rained on Wednesday for a few minutes; 0.38 mm. Barely enough to dampen the top of the leaves. And the weather forecast for the whole month ahead gives us another 1/2 a mm. the 22nd. That's it.

Last Sunday, though, I had hopes. It had rained 6 times in the previous week. Maybe there would be a few mushrooms popping up. I dropped in to the Elk Falls trail to look.

No.

All I could find were tiny, tiny ones down in the duff in the shade of a log, some Witches' Butter, and one guttating polypore.

Very small, barely 1 cm. tall. Possibly the Orange Mosscap. The arrow shape at the top is one of the "mice" trying to hide under a scale of a Douglas-fir cone.

Hard to identify; the wavy edge may be a clue. On the wood at the left, there's a spiky, grey springtail.

With a pretty, red-eyed fly.

More Witches Butter, on the same log. As they dry, the colour intensifies. This one's loaded with springtails.

It may be dry now, but this polypore is still shedding liquid (guttation) that it absorbed while it rained.

At least it's cooler this week. Maybe there will be mushrooms down in the wetlands beside the river. I'll go look.

Después de unos cuantos dias de lluvia, estamos otra vez en tiempo de sequía. Llovió el miércoles por unos minutos; total, 0.38mm. Apenas suficiente para humedecer las hojas más expuestas. Y nos están pronosticando medio milímetro de lluvia el dia 22. Y nada más hasta la segunda semana de octubre.

El domino pasado todavía tenía esperanzas; después de 6 dias de lluvia, tal vez habría uno que otro hongo. Fui a buscarlos en el sendero hacia las cataratas Elk.

No.

Los únicos hongos que pude encontrar eran unos cuantos escondidos en el musgo debajo de un tronco caído, un poco de Mantequilla de Brujas, y un poliporo solitario.

1. Se levanta apenas 1 cm. sobre el suelo. Puede ser Rickenella fibula. La cosa en forma de flecha atrás del hongo es uno de los "ratones" que se tratan de esconder bajo las escamas de las piñas de abeto de Douglas.
2. Este es difícil de identificar. El borde ondulado es una característica que puede ayudar. A la izquierda, sobre la madera, hay un colémbolo gris.
3. Un hongo con una mosca de ojos rojos.
4. Mantequilla de Brujas, Dacrymyces chrysospermus. Con una ala perdida de mosca.
5. Otra, esta con colémbolos. El color se hace más intenso mientras el hongo se seca.
6. Ya no llueve, pero este poliporo sigue exudando el líquido que recibió la semana pasada.

Hide and seek

Sometimes a quick point and shoot works. I was checking out the red moss again (still red) and grasshoppers were clicking around me; I heard them, but mostly didn't see them. But one clicked right in front of me. I still couldn't see it, but took a photo of the ground at my feet anyhow. One camera click, one grasshopper click, and it was gone; I didn't see it go, either.

The red here is the ripe heads of roadside weeds.

Here it is:

Pallid-winged grasshopper, Trimerotropis pallidipennis.

The clicking sound is called crepitation. Sometimes it's quite loud, sometimes it continues the whole time the grasshopper is in the air, or sometimes, like today, it's just one click as it takes off, maybe because it's taking short hops in a space where there isn't much flat ground. It is produced by snapping taut sections of the hind wings.

Compare: crepitation, click, click, click. With stridulation (remember the crickets!) a strident (good adjective for stridulation); cree, cree, cree, cree, cree, continuing on and on and on ... if it's a cricket. The grasshopper males also stridulate, but the Pallid-winged's song is a soft trill, produced by rubbing the upper part of his back leg against his forewings. And he sings during the day, and sensibly sleeps at night.

A vece sirve sacar fotos sin tratar de enfocarlas. Fui a ver como seguía el musgo rojo (sigue igualmente rojo) y allí entre las hierbas al pie del afloramiento, los saltamontes saltaban, con cada salto haciendo un breve chasquido. Los oía pero pocas veces los veía. Pero uno produjo su chasquido justo en frente de mis pies. No lo vi, pero saqué una foto rapidamente del suelo. Un clic de la cámara, otro clic del saltamontes, y ya se había largado. No lo vi al irse, tampoco.

    1. Aquí está esa foto: ¿puedes hallar el saltamontes?

    2. Y aquí se ve mejor. Es un saltamontes de alas pálidas, Trimerotropis pallidipennis.

El chasquido que hace se llama crepitación. A veces suena bastante fuerte, y a veces sigue mientras dura el vuelo. O a veces, como hoy, solamente se oye un "clic" cuando salta, tal vez porque hoy hacían saltos cortos, estando en tierra accidentada. El sonido se produce estirando y acortando partes de las alas delanteras.

Compare: la crepitación suena como clic, clic, clic. Y la estridulación (como lo que hacen los grillos) es un constante cri, cri, cri, cri, cri ... Un sonido estridente si se trata de un grillo. Los machos de los saltamontes también estridulan, pero el canto del saltamontes de alas pálidas es un zumbido suave, que produce tallando parte de su patas posteriores contra las alas delanteras. Y canta de dia, y cortesmente duerme de noche.

Red moss cushions

I'm still looking at that sedimentary rock outcrop. The first time I stopped, two weeks ago, most of the moss on the rocks was red. Ok; we've had a hot, dry spell, and moss does turn red or brown without rain. Then I went back once more, to look at the moss more closely. Still red and orange. And it had been raining. Hmmm ...

I went back again this week, in the pouring rain. Some spots of the moss have turned green, as expected, but the rest is dripping wet and still red.

Here it is, on the second visit, Aug. 28th. It had rained twice since the first visit.

And two days ago, in the rain. The greens are brighter. The reds are still red.

Some areas are a deep, winy red. At least three species of moss here, I think.

I loaded my photos on two different search engines. For the top two photos, both suggested Fire Moss, Ceratodon purpureus. Except that Google, for the same photo, once I added in that it was on Vancouver Island, said, no, it's not a moss at all, but Orange Rock Hair, Trentepohlia aurea, a green alga. And some photos of this do look similar. Others not so much. I'm not convinced.

And then, I loaded the third photo. Now Google gives me Star moss, Syntrichia sp. as well as the Fire moss again.

EFlora (UBC) says, about the Fire Moss, "Forming dense, short turfs varying from dark green to wine-­red, with erect, usually unbranched shoots, stems red-brown; leaves somewhat contorted when dry." That sounds about right.

I collected two handfuls of moss from the bottom of the slope and brought them home for a closer look. 

Google image search calls this Juniper haircap moss, Polystrichum juniperinum. Could be.

And this, they say, is fire moss, Ceratodon purpureus.

So is this, they say.

I'll have to take a fourth trip out, with a long stick to knock off one of those red pillows from higher up. Sunday, maybe; it's not supposed to be raining.

Sigo pensando en ese afloramiento rocoso. La primera vez que lo vi, hace quince dias, casi todo el musgo que crece en las rocas estaba rojo. Bueno, hemos tenido un verano seco, y los musgos sí se vuelven rojos o cafés cuando no llueve. Pero luego regresé para verlo mejor. Y seguía rojo y anaranjado. Y eso después de 2 dias de lluvia. ¿Qué pasa aquí?

Regresé otra vez esta semana. Llovía; había estado lloviendo todo el dia. Y algunos de los cojines de musgo se han vuelto verdes, como era de esperar, pero la mayor parte sigue rojo. Empapado, pero rojo.

    1. Esto es el dia 28 de agosto, en la segunda visita. Ya había llovido dos veces desde la visita anterior.

    2. Y aquí está el 2 de septiembre, en la lluvia. Los musgos verdes se han puesto más brillantes. Los rojos siguen rojos.

    3. En algunos lugares, el musgo es un rojo oscuro. En esta foto, creo, hay 3 especies de musgo.

Subí las fotos a dos buscadores. Con las primeras dos fotos, los dos sugerieron Musgo del Fuego, Ceratodon purpureus. Pero Google me dió otra identificación cuando le dije que el sitio estaba en la isla Vancouver; entonces, en cambio, dijo que no era musgo sino Trentepohlia aurea, un alga verde a que le dan el nombre de Pelo Anaranjado de las Rocas. Y algunas de las fotos se parecen. Otras no. No me convence.

Cuando subí la tercera foto, Google me sugerió Musgo Estrella, Syntrichia sp., y  también el musgo del Fuego otra vez.

EFlora (UBC) dice, acerca del musgo del Fuego, "Forma cojines espesos y cortos que van desde verde oscuro a rojo vino, con tallos erguidos, generalmente sin ramas, color rojo/marrón; las hojas algo retorcidos cuando están secas."  Eso los describe bastante bien.

Recogí dos cojincitos de musgo de donde los pude alcanzar en la base del afloramiento y los traje a casa para verlos mejor.

    4. Google dice que esto es el musgo junípero, Polytrichum juniperinum. Puede ser.

    5. Y esto, dice, es Ceratodon purpureus.

    6. Y este también.

Tendré que regresar otra vez, con un palo largo para desprender uno de esos cojines de un lugar más alto. El domingo, tal vez; dicen que no va a estar lloviendo. 

What is this?

I had to go back to the outcrop of sedimentary rocks I posted photos of last week. Some of my photos (the ones I didn't post) had large burnt-out patches, something white smeared on the rocks. Or was it the rock itself? I had to go and look at it.

Up close, it's really green, a bright lime green in spots, in others that shiny white with a hint of green. And it draws patterns on the rock.

It covers equally the matrix and the embedded stones and the hollows where stones have fallen out.

Some kind of a lichen, I think. Or an ambitious slime mold?

Where the light hit at a different angle, it looks blue-green.

Zooming in. The criss-crossing lines have a sort of slime-mold look.

I've gone through my Lichen book hoping for an id. Unfortunately, it's arranged, not by type or growth pattern or colour, but in alphabetical order. So I looked at all the photos; none match this. I've posted photos on iNaturalist, hoping someone will recognize it.

And then, looking at these new photos, there was something else to wonder about. That moss looks unusual. So I had to go back. Again.

The Drive BC webcam captured me heading for the outcrop this afternoon. Both the camera and I are wearing rain gear.

Tuve que regresar al afloramiento de roca conglomerada de que subí fotos la semana pasada. Algunas de mis fotos, las que no subí, tienen grandes manchas blancas, sin detalle; algo blanco que cubría las rocas. ¿O podría ser la roca misma? Tuve que ir a verlo mejor.

Visto de cerca, es verde; en algunos sitios un verde fuerte, verde lima; en otras partes es blanco con apenas un tinte tenue de verde. Y pinta redes en la roca.

    1. Cubre igualmente la matriz, las piedras, y los huecos donde piedras se han desprendido.

    2. Creo que puede ser un liquen. O tal vez un mojo mucilaginoso muy grande.

    3. Donde la luz le llega desde otro ángulo, se ve verde azulado.

    4. Las redes sí se parecen a los diseños que hacen los mohos mucilaginosos.

Miré todas las fotos en mi libro-guía sobre Líquenes. No hubo otra manera de buscar; el libro tiene los líquenes en orden, no por su forma, ni su manera de crecer, ni siquiera por el color, sino por orden alfabético. Y ninguna de sus fotos se parece a esto. Subí fotos a iNaturalist; con suerte, alguien lo conocerá.

    5. Una vista más amplia de parte del afloramiento.

Y ahora, mirando las fotos nuevas, encontré otro misterio. Esos musgos ... no deben ser de ese color después de la lluvia. ¿Qué pasa ahí? Tuve que regresar otra vez.

    6. Una foto del webcam de DriveBC que me vió camino al afloramiento esta tarde. Tanto la cámara como yo estamos vestidos para la lluvia.

Mañana, creo, tendré fotos del musgo.

Midnight serenade

It was the middle of the night and I was poking into corners, looking behind and under furniture, searching for a midnight singer. A cricket; he'd been chirping hopefully since dark, announcing to the world, "I'm here, I'm here! Ladies, here I am!"

I wasn't one of the ladies he was dreaming of.

Why, is it, I wondered, that you can never tell where the cricket is by the racket he makes?

Fall Field Cricket, Gryllus pennsylvanicus, male.

Only the males sing. Or "stridulate", a word that feels more appropriate at midnight.

The stridulatory organ is located on the tegmen, or fore wing, which is leathery in texture. A large vein runs along the centre of each tegmen, with comb-like serrations on its edge forming a file-like structure, and at the rear edge of the tegmen is a scraper. The tegmina are held at an angle to the body and rhythmically raised and lowered which causes the scraper on one wing to rasp on the file on the other. The central part of the tegmen contains the "harp", an area of thick, sclerotized membrane which resonates and amplifies the volume of sound, as does the pocket of air between the tegmina and the body wall. Their song seems loud from close up (like when he's under your bed), and is louder on warm nights. A study of this species, (PubMed), measured their chirp at an average of 61.7 decibels, about the level of a dishwasher, or a busy office, with about 2 chirps per second.

And the singers hide in cracks, which amplifies the sound. And then it bounces off every little flat surface around, so that it seems to come from every corner of a midnight bedroom.

I gave up after a long, fruitless search and went back to bed to the serenade of "cree cree cree cree cree ..."

Cricket females have smoother forewings, without the carving that converts them into musical instruments.

Era medianoche y yo andaba investigando rincones, mirando debajo y atrás de los muebles, buscando un cantante nocturno. Un grillo. Había estado cantando, esperanzudo, toda la noche, anunciando al mundo entero, "¡Aquí estoy, aquí estoy! ¡Muchachas, heme aquí!

Yo no era el objeto de su serenata.

¿Porqué será, me preguntaba, que nunca puedes saber por el chirrido precisamente en donde se esconde el grillo?

     1. Grillo de campo de otoño, Gryllus pennsylvanicus, macho.

Los machos son los que cantan. O mejor dicho, "estridulan", una palabra más apreciada a medianoche.

El órgano estridulatorio se halla en la tegmina, o la ala delantera, la cual tiene la textura de cuero. Una vena grande corre por el centro de cada tegmina, teniendo dientes serrados, en forma de peines en el borde, haciendo una estructura parecida a una lima, y en el borde posterior de la tegmina, hay un raspador. Las tegminas se sostienen a un ángulo respeto al cuerpo y se levantan y se bajan rítmicamente, lo que causa que el raspador de una ala cepille la lima de la otra. La parte central de la tegmina contiene el "arpa", un area de membrana gruesa y esclerotizada, la cual amplifica el volumen del sonido, como también lo hace la bolsa de aire entre la tegmina y el cuerpo. Su canto suena fuerte cuando están cerca (como por ejemplo debajo de tu cama) y es más fuerte en las noches más templadas. Un estudio sobre esta especie, en (PubMed), midió su chirrido, calculando un promedio de 61.7 decibelios, aproximadamente el nivel que produce un lavaplatos, o una oficina activa, produciendo más o menos 2 chirridos por segundo.

Y los cantantes se esconden en grietas, lo que también aumenta el sonido. Y luego rebota de cada pequeña superficie plana, de manera que parece venir de cada esquina de una recámara.

Después de una larga búsqueda, me rendí y regresé a la cama, oyendo la serenata; "cri cri cri cri cri cri ..."

Las alas delanteras de las hembras son más lisas, sin el grabado que las convertiría en instrumentos musicales.

    2. Hembra. El apéndice central al final del abdomen es su ovipositor.

These are the last of the rainy day pics, from the "trail of sorts" above Myra Falls.

Myra Creek, from the top of a cliff. Raindrops show up against the green pool. I was on the edge of the rock, an arm about one of the spindly trees to keep my balance. The rock walls here are tall and cut straight down.

It isn't really a trail, just about 50 metres of open ground ending on slippery rocks at the top of the cliff. That's Buttle Lake in the background.

What's at Fault?

Whether slender ribbons or seething walls of foam, all waterfalls owe their existence to an abrupt change in the level of a river or creek channel. All along Buttle Lake earthquakes have caused breaks in the earth's crust where the land has been displaced vertically. Here at Myra Falls, the creek plunges nearly 70 metres in three cascades, each marking a shift in the crust and reminding us of the forces at work deep within the earth.

En estas fotos, trataba de capturar en ambiente, fresco, lluvioso, y algo peligroso, del caminito en el bosque arriba de las cataratas Myra.

    1. Mirando desde la cima del precipicio sobre el riachuelo Myra. Gotas de lluvia se ven contra lo verde del agua. Yo estaba parada en el mero borde de la roca, abrazando uno de los árboles para no perder el equilibrio. Las paredes rocosas aquí son altas y completamente verticales.

    2. No es precisamente un camino, sino solamente unos 50 metros de terreno abierto, terminando sobre rocas resbalosas y luego nada. En el fondo se ve el Lago Buttle.

    3. Rocas típicas de esta zona; se rompen en planos angulares, y se cubren de musgos y líquenes, y a veces los helechos regaliz.

¿Qué es una Falla?

Si son listones angostos o paredes de espuma hirviente, todas las cataratas deben su existencia a un cambio abrupto en el nivel del canal de un rio o riachuelo. A lo largo del Lago Buttle, terremotos han causado rupturas en la corteza terrestre, donde el terreno se ha desplazado verticalmente. Aquí en las Cataratas Myra, el riachuelo cae casi 70 metros en tres etapas, cada una a raiz de un movimiento de la corteza; nos hace pensar de las fuerzas obrando en las profundidades de la tierra.

       5. Helechos regaliz, Polypodium glycyrrhiza, creciendo en una roca cubierta de musgos.

All wet; lichens and mosses loving the rain

I drove all the way to Myra Falls (about an hour and a half from town if you don't waste time on the road, but I did; I always do) and then never went down to see the falls. By the time I got there, it was raining steadily, and getting dark. I'll leave the hike down for next summer, I think.

But there was a sort of trail leading off behind the information kiosk; it went to a point where there was a glimpse of the creek above the falls. With its own little bit of a falls; the creek comes from high above. I took a few photos before my cameras got too wet; mostly of lichens and moss.

Cladonia lichens, moss (Dicranum sp.?), and wet rocks.

The Douglas-fir needles looked this red, maybe because they were sunburnt and soaking wet.

There are two kinds of moss here; the spiky one in the centre is probably Polytrichum sp. And up near the top, several brown disks that look like the peridioles (spore cases) of bird's nest mushrooms. I looked but couldn't see any of the nests.

One of the reindeer lichens, with fewer branches than the ones I find down at sea level. Scattered throughout, down in the moss, a close look shows pixie-cup lichens.

Manejé a las cataratas Myra (ruta que, dicen, ocupa aproximadamente hora y media, si no pierdes tiempo en camino; pero sí me distraje, como siempre) y llegando allí, no bajé hasta las cataratas. Ya cuando llegué, estaba lloviendo continuamente, y además, ya la luz se desvanecía. Dejaré la visita para el verano siguiente, creo.

Pero hay un caminito que no figura en el mapa que se ve en el quiosco de informes; se dirige a un punto desde donde se puede vislumbrar el riachuelo arriba de las cataratas, este con su propio caída pequeña de agua. Saqué unas pocas fotos de líquenes y musgos bajo la lluvia.

1. Líquenes Cladonia sp., musgos Dicranum sp. (creo), y piedras mojadas.
2. Las hojas secas de abeto de Douglas se veían tan rojas, tal vez porque estaban primero quemadas por el sol y luego empapadas.
3. Hay dos especies de musgo aquí; el musgo de color verde fuerte en el centro será probablemente  Polytrichum sp. Y en la parte superior de la foto, hay varios discos color café que se parecen a los periodoles (sacos de esporas) de los hongos "nido de pájaro", Polystrichum sp. Busqué, pero no vi ninguno de los "nidos".
4. Uno de los líquenes "reno", Cladonia sp.. Y entre el musgo se pueden ver otra Cladonia, los líquenes "taza de duende".

Rainy day drive

It was a misty, rainy day. For me, the perfect weather for a long drive, so I went to Myra Falls at the far end of Buttle Lake, stopping along the way to pick up some rocks and to look at the view, all in muted blues and silvery greys.

All I could see of Buttle Lake from the top of the hill at Myra Falls. I didn't go down; at that time it was raining pretty hard.

And Upper Campbell Lake, through the window of Strathcona Lodge, where I stopped for coffee on my way home. It was 5:30, several hours before sunset, but the afternoon light was already fading.

Llovía. A veces fuerte, a veces apenas lo que llamamos "neblina escocés"; gotitas finísimas. No hay nada mejor que manejar, estar en la carretera, en un dia como este. Fui a las Cataratas Myra al extremo del Lago Buttle, deteniéndome en camino para recoger algunas piedras, y para apreciar la vista, todo en colores apagados, azules y grises plateados.

    1. El lago Buttle, como a medio lago. (Es un lago larguísimo; casi un rio lento de 20 kilómetros de largo.)

    2. Llegando a las cataratas en la lluvia, esto es todo lo que se pudo ver desde arriba. No bajé a las cataratas; llovía algo fuerte en ese momento.

    3. El lago Upper Campbell, desde la ventana de Strathcona Park Lodge, donde tomaba un cafecito en camino a casa. 5:30; faltaban horas todavía para la puesta del sol, pero ya el dia se oscurecía.

Just rocks. And stones. Lots of stones.

Crossing the island, I pass (and stop to crane my neck at) great masses of rock, entire mountains seeming to be one solid piece of rock. And tall cliff faces with jagged cracks and squarish slabs. Even the rocks that fall on the side of the road are sharp. "Angular", the BCGov publication I've been reading calls them:

But there's one spot I've passed many times, looking to the south where there's a webcam, and speeding on past; this is a heavily logged-off area, not inspiring. But this time, I looked at the north side of the road. And the rocks are different here. I had to stop.

At first glance, just another logged-off space. But ...

It's made up of small, round rocks all cemented together.

It looks like mud, but it's solid rock.

Some of the stones have fallen out, leaving round pockets behind.

And more. No sharp edges anywhere.

Like the crest of a wave.

This is an outcrop of conglomerate: sedimentary rock whereas the others were igneous (volcanic stuff). I'll have to quote the Google explanation, against my inclination, but it condenses info scattered all over other sources.

Sedimentary rock ((is) characterized by smooth, rounded pebbles and cobbles (clasts) embedded within a hardened, finer-grained matrix. ... The smooth, rounded profiles of the embedded rocks signify that they were heavily weathered and tumbled by ancient, high-energy flowing water—such as a fast-moving river or a wave-battered shoreline—long before being compacted and cemented. ... subtle horizontal layering ... indicates sequential periods of deposition where changing water currents deposited different sizes of sediment over time. This formation is typical of the sedimentary units found along the eastern margin of Vancouver Island.

The area is a mid-level, lumpy shelf, all lakes and wetlands and meandering rivers, about 300 metres above sea level. It forms a low step between the flat lands in the Comox valley along the eastern coast and the towering peaks of the majority of the island.

Cruzando la isla, paso por rocas enormes, montañas enteras hechas, al parecer, de una sola roca. Y precipicios altísimos con grietas afiladas y bloques rectangulares. Hasta las rocas que han caído al lado de la carretera tienen los bordes agudos. "Piedras angulares", las llama el informe del Gobierno de BC que he estado estudiando:

    1. Cerca de Buttle Lake, agosto de 2022.

O hay masas gigantes compuestas de lava acojinada:

Pero hay un tramo de carretera donde siempre he recorrido viendo hacia el sur, donde hay una cámara web, sin detenerme; el area ha sido talado no hace mucho, e inspira poco interés. Pero la semana pasada, miré hacia el norte. Y las rocas son distintas. Me tuve que detener.

    3. A primera vista, un terreno como muchos.

    4. Está formado con muchas piedras redondas, todas integradas en la roca.

    5. Parece ser lodo, pero es roca firme.

    6. Donde algunas piedras se han caído, dejaron pocitos redondos.

    7. Más. No hay ni un ángulo agudo; todo es redondeado.

    8. Se parece a una ola marítima al punto de romperse.

Este es un afloramiento de roca conglomerada; son rocas sedimentarias, donde las otras eran rocas ígneas (volcánicas). Tendré que citar la explicación que me da Google, lo que no me gusta, pero aquí han condensado información que de otro modo encontré en fragmentos en varias partes.

La roca sedimentaria se caracteriza por piedras redondas y lisas, y guijarros (clastos) integrados en una matriz endurecida, de granos más finos ... Lo liso y redondo de las piedras integradas demuestra que se habían desgastado y revueltos en corrientes de agua de alta energía — como por ejemplo un rio de corriente rápido o una costa golpeada por las olas — mucho antes de que fueron integradas y cementadas ... Capas horizontales sutiles ... sugieren que hubieron períodos secuenciales en que fueron depositadas, donde las corrientes variables de agua depositaron sedimentos de distintos tamaños. Esta formación es típica de los depósitos sedimentarios que se hallan en el margen occidental de la isla de Vancouver.

La zona es una plataforma accidentada, llena de laguitos y humedales y rios sinuosos, a una altura promedia de unos 300 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Forma un escalón bajo entre las tierras planas del valle de Comox en la costa y las montañas altas de la mayor parte de la isla.

Happy event

Well, this was exciting! I was dusting in the hallway and looked at the underside of a wood carving. And see what I found there:

A fat cellar spider. 

And would those be eggs in her big belly?

She didn't appreciate the duster, and moved up to the ceiling. So I followed, and then kept checking on her, several times a day:

Watching me, watching her.

She did some vibrating dances to discourage attention, but had to rest occasionally.

Still watching me.

A day later, in the next room.

And tonight, a week later, when I checked on her, she looked skinny, and longer. I climbed on a chair to see better, and, Yes! those had been eggs in her belly.

If she stays put (I hope she does), I may be able to see the spiderlings developing, showing off their baby legs even while they're inside the eggs. 

The spider: cellar spider, Pholcus phalangioides. Female, obviously.

Nunca sabes lo que te espera; iba tranquilamente haciendo los quehaceres de la casa. Estaba sacudiendo una talla de madera en el pasillo, y mira lo que encontré escondida abajo:

    1. Una araña fólcida bien gorda.

    2. Y esas cosas en su abdomen, ¿serán huevos?

No se sentía a gusto con el plumero tan cerca, y se mudó a un sitio protegido bajo el techo. La seguí, y luego seguí buscándola varias veces diarias:

    3. En el techo azul cielo, mirándome que la miraba.

    4. Se puzo a bailar el baile suspendido que usan para confundir otros predadores, pero por fin descansó.

    5. Me sigue observando.

    6. El día siguiente, en la cocina.

Y esta noche, una semana después, cuando la vi estaba delgada, y parecía estar más larga. Me subí a una silla para verla mejor, y ¡Sí! Esas cosas que había llevado en el abdomen eran sus huevos.

    7. La madre orgullosa.

Y si permanece guardando su cría en el mismo sitio (Ojalá) tal vez podré ver cuando las arañitas empiezan a desarrollarse; con buena luz, se pueden ver sus patas antes de que salgan de los huevos.

La araña es Pholcus phalangioides.
