2 Elvis 45's

What can I say, not everything he did was all that great, but when he was on, he was ON. My parent's old pile of Elvis 45's is pretty much all the Elvis I've ever had (other than the fantastic "Tiger Man" CD from the 68 Comeback, which showed he had a much better sense of humor about himself than any other superstar I can think of). Unfortunately his (early) kind of showmanship (lays it on thick, but doesn't overdo it) is a thing of the past. Plus, if someone can get me into sappy love songs, then they've really got some fucking talent.

The Fall- It's The New Thing!/Various Times 7"

From when the Fall sounded almost like a punk group (but not "punk"), on the A side at least...a great shit-take on most everyone.
B-side is a step forward (ha) from "Repetition," becoming darker and more atmospheric.
Seems like this single is a bit overlooked, don't know why. Just look at their release list for their first few years and the rate of growth (and at that pace) is amazing, with a great sense of humor that way too many people completely miss.

Uuhng Schpugg Oldies Radio: Wrong Speed Edition

Yet another dumb idea to share.
One night while less than sober I put a 45 on 33 rpm and was too lazy to get up and change it. In my mind at the time, making a whole tape this way seemed like a great idea, even though I didn't have the 45 adapter thing and with intoxicated accuracy, a lot of the songs, to my amusement, came out incredibly wobbly (warning: could make you barf if you're too drunk). All this seemed funny at the time, and at least a year has passed since then, and it is still amusing now, but would probably just be annoying if you're sober. I do find myself getting oddly adapted to slow motion living.
This could be the soundtrack for a pathetically drunken/stoner attempt at a party, by yourself or with others, where dancing is encouraged...should at least be funny to who ever's there.
I'm full of stupid shit like this...
Waging war on people who take themselves seriously...

Ramrods- Ghost Riders In The Sky/ Zig Zag

Unfortunately this record is cracked from the inside all the way out, but it only makes a small pop...not too bad. Just another solid instrumental RNR 45 by a band I've never heard anything else by. Tough stuff.

Lee Hazlewood- Greyhound Bus Depot/Trouble Maker

A rare (for what reason?) single from 1969.
Great stuff...both sides (both covers). If you've ever wanted to give a puppy to a woman with chili all over her dress or crucify a hippy, this record is for you.

Uuhng Schpugg Oldies Radio: 45s Edition

I've all but ceased listening to the radio since oldies stations went off the air (plus college radio seems to only play that Shitfork crap). So why not make mixes from old vinyl (50s-70s) and pretend it's "radio?" And to make it even cheesier I'm not including a tracklist here (it is available once downloaded) and recommend not looking at it when first playing this. Why? Why not?
Attempted simulation of radio (not knowing what's coming next) with the added bonus of no DJs or commercials (and skipping, if you must).
There are well known songs in here, so if you have a problem with that, kindly fuck off.

Alexander Spence- All My Life (I Love You)/Land Of The Sun

If you have never heard Skip's solo album, "Oar," (still available from Sundazed) I highly recommend starting there.
Any album by a guy who, after a drug induced axe attack on a friend while on tour, upon being discharged from a mental institution in New York, rode a motorcycle down to a Nashville studio to record a solo album, (and also being the original drummer for Jefferson Airplane, hired because he "looked cool" even though he said he couldn't play drums, and then got kicked out because he wasn't a good enough of drummer, and then being in early Moby Grape) is bound to be "interesting"...then you find that the bonus tracks on the CD get even stranger... (AKA it's really good).
This 7" is all I've been able to find of his since that late 60's solo album.
The first track (from '72...solo in studio) almost sounds like it could be an early Moby Grape outtake. The lyrics, sung by almost anyone else, are moronic...BUT few musicians are quite as sincere as Skip...and his simplicity only amplifies it.
Track two is where it gets interesting to me. I've heard a lot of this guy's stuff from the 60's and one song from the 70's, but for the next thing I hear is a solo track from '96 that he sent to the X-Files people because he heard they were putting a CD together and thought his song would fit their "spooky" theme...he had definitely stayed weird.

The Impalas- Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)/Fool, Fool, Fool

The A-side should be familiar to some. I would prefer it to be more like "I ran all the way home, just to say fuck you," but that wouldn't have sold as many copies, unfortunately. The main reason I posted this was for the excellent B-side...a should be classic in white boy Doo Wop.

Charlie Ryan & the Timberline Riders- Hot Rod Lincoln/Thru the Mill

Late fifties hillbilly rap rock? More like rockabilly storytelling which Bob Dylan came to be famous for, in a more pretentious way. Too bad he never used slide guitar for sound effects or was this direct and down to earth...common folk ain't into all that poetry shit.
The A-side is a rockabilly classic, but as time goes on I think I prefer "Thru the Mill." Worrying about your music "career" versus your crappy day job? Sounds awful familiar...

Duane Eddy- Yep/Three-30-Blues

Another from my Dad's collection of old 45's that has been a favorite of mine for a long long time. I was lucky enough to get a hold of his Duane Eddy collection at a young age and I consider Duane Eddy as an integral part of my love of instrumental music.
Another reason I love this 45 is the way it jumps out of the speakers and you can still hear it unamplified, which unfortunately is lost in the digital transfer.
Once I got into Lee Hazlewood in college I was surprised to learn that he had written many songs early on for Duane Eddy and "Yep!" oozes with that wonderful Hazlewood cheesyness. It's not to hard to imagine his reverb drenched baritone over this one. I may be wrong, but I think he may have played a part in Eddy's aquarium tank echo system.
A great well balanced single.

The Fendermen- Mule Skinner Blues/Torture

The Fendermen were two guys with the exact same birthday in Wisconsin and who both played Fender Guitars through one amp.
"Mule Skinner Blues" is classic RNR, it's just that simple.
"Torture" is an instrumental number and falls a little flat due to the lack of a rhythm section. Not a bad song at all, though.

Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs- Li'l Red Riding Hood

These guys complete and total lack of seriousness never loses its charm. Too bad it's not seen in bands these days.
These guys were the Ramones of the 60's. Almost every song sounded exactly the same and they were one of the few bands who could pull it off. Even if a lot of songs are based on nursery rhymes. If you take it seriously, you may not enjoy it...so don't!
If you've heard "Li'l Red Riding Hood" or "Wooly Bully," you know what to expect...great times and silly tunes.

Davie Allan & the Arrows- "Blues Theme" LP, and "Apache '65/Blue Guitar" 45

Every younger generation has to go one step further than the last, and in that way I see Davie Allan to Link Wray. Where Link Wray seemed to write street fighting anthems, Davie Allan was more into motorcycles and tough guy cruising tunes.
Allan's claim to fame was "King of the Fuzz Guitar" and I sure love fuzzy music, especially swarming over trebly primitive backdrop plus the longest tune is 2:10. Too tough to live, too fast to die.
There are a few songs that seem like either pressure for the label or audience pandering, namely "William Tell 1967" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky." They aren't bad renditions but they lack the spark and street punk nature of the Arrows' originals. That's an unusual amount of freedom for a small band at that time. A lot of the albums by its contemporary garage rock vocal bands have one amazing song, maybe a few copies of said song, and a whole lot of covers of already popular songs. All in all these records don't really stand up as strong as they could, but "Blues Theme" is definitely an exception.

This must have predated the "King of Fuzz Guitar" title (released 2 years before "Blues Theme"), seeing as these tunes are not fuzzy, but don't let that stop you. "Apache '65" is a very strong, solid rocker and "Blue Guitar" reminds me of Duane Eddy's "The Lonely One," if only because it's a more "sensitive" tune by a rebel rock n' roll guitar slinger, but Allan's retains more street-cred.

Dave 'Baby' Cortez- The Happy Organ

My Mom has always claimed this song as a favorite and no matter how much fun I used to make of it as a kid, "The Happy Organ" really is a great song. I love instrumental "oldies" especially one with this much spark and vitality.
The B-side is a odd choice for what would seem like a party music A-side, a broken hearted ballad. Taken out of context, it works a lot better.
Even though getting the light and dark sides of R'N'R on one single seems like a good idea, it comes off a bit weird...but who cares, right?

Calypso Carnival featuring King Flash

Yet another 45 from my parents' collection. This one has been a long time favorite, mostly for "Mama Looka Boo Boo (Boo Boo Man)." Harry Belafonte did a vastly inferior version that I'm sure a whole lot more people heard. There really is no justice in this world...
Try not to smile once for the duration of this song.
"Zombie Jamboree" (in Long Island Cemetery) isn't bad either.

Jim Bakus- "I Need a Vacation/Delicious"

Wow, what a bad record. You may know Jim Bakus as Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island, the voice of Mr. Magoo, or the Dad from "Rebel Without a Cause," but this is his um...single. My Dad says that he used to buy discount bundles of 45's, with good ones on the ends and crap in the middle. Here's one from the crap pile.
The music on "...Vacation" is actually okay, but Jim takes it beyond cheesy. "Delicious" is kinda creepy-ish, unlistenable some days and hilarious the next.
To be honest, I don't feel the need to write about this one...you'll see. Just give it a few listens before you think about deleting it. It becomes rewarding later.
