For Realz

This month has been ca-ray-zee.
I had a list of things that I needed/wanted to accomplish. Didn't happen. Maybe next year, I am keeping the pictures on file. So my one major objective was to finish the Halloween costumes. I have 4 out of 6 done. I finished the kids costumes on Tuesday just in time for us to go to a neighbor hood spook alley. Canon took 3 steps out of the car and fell and ripped a hole in his pants. So now it is on the list to make new pants. Gavin spilt hot chocolate down the front of his costume and the bum of Penny's is all brown from sitting down in the dirt. Have mercy. I have resewed my costume no less then 5 times no more than 10. My costume may be the bane of my existence. It is a good thing I like Halloween other wise this one may make me throw in the towel.

The other day our downstairs bathroom flooded. Just another monkey wrench.

Gavin and Laney dressed Penny all on their own. Picked out the clothes too. She didn't seem to mind.We are co-hosting a Halloween party on Saturday. I feel like I haven't really done much for it. Fingers crossed it turns out OK.

Penny has cut all four of her top teeth at the same time. So while sometimes I would like to put her in a little kitchen cupboard, I swear she did it all on her own.
Sometimes we just need a moment to ourselves.

Our Trip to Vegas

Blake's mom just turned 60, so we thought it would be fun to surprise her for her birthday. In Vegas we stayed with our friends the Scows. We big puffy heart them. Julie gave us some left over popcorn from a carnival that she threw. Canon would not let it leave his side. Popcorn is like his life force. Gavin got some fangs. I think he is Team Edward all the way.
Our attempt at a kids picture was somewhat successful. Perhaps it was due to Brad's face making? Or mine. Someone smacked me on the back of the head so now my face might be stuck like that. When Dana showed up to the park, for her surprise party, I am sure it came as quite a shock to see a whole bunch of Dana faces. We all had a blast. Dana and the kids played Red rover. I am sure most of you are aware that the game red rover normally doesn't end well...thankfully there were only a couple of hurt feelings but in the end they were still holding hands. The kids played at the park. I normally have this look on my face when I am watching my children. I have given up naming them in my head to keep track of them. It normally goes something like this "1, 2, 3...where is 3? 4. Golden."#1 Scaring the children whilst swinging on the toys. #2 pumping her heart out on the swings. #3 Contemplating whether he should poop in the slide, in hopes of trapping the smell in, or waiting for a quiet moment at Grandma's house. #4 thinking that she is the IT because she can walk all on her own. Know what else I did? I couldn't help myself. It may have made me a little giggly.
All around the weekend was a success.

Laney's Big Day

Turning 5 was a big one for Laney. She still tells me on occasion "Now that I am five (insert whatever you will here)." She was prepped and she was ready for the big day. Only one problem. We decided since Grandma Dana had had a birthday a couple of days before and she had turned 60 it would be nice to surprise her. No big deal...except that we had to drive to Vegas on Laney's birthday. Only she didn't know. Because we don't tell our kids ANYTHING until the moments before we do them. Trust me, it has saved oodles of heart ache. So we started off the day like regular. Silly faces. I always start the day off with a good silly face. Makes me feel alive. Balloons. Lots of them. Birthday cereal. It can be made of pure sugar and what does Laney pick? The sensible option. However, this is coming from a girl that will eat Mini Wheats over Lucky Charms any day. Then there was some present opening. (This did technically happen after we got back from Vegas.) There were also some Thank you squeezes given. Now, I feel like I need to brace you for this:
Laney has always had a lot of spunk. Someone put a lot of personality in her little body. She has also always had her own style. (exhibit a, b, c, d, e) If I think that she will love something, she doesn't. If I try to pick something out for her at the store, she doesn't wear it. That's the facts. I went to a store with the intention of buying Laney a necklace. I figured that it had to be the exact opposite of what I would normally pick out.
Big? Check. Gaudy? Check. Shiny? Check. Multicolored? Checkity check. She says she loves it so I think it is a win.
"How do you style such a fine piece of jewelry?" you ask." Pajama bottoms and a wife beater. Thug life style.

Back Peddling

I realized yesterday that I am not a very good Monday/Tuesday blogger. I normally start on Wednesday. Not the best approach if you want to stay up to date on things that happened over the weekend, or last weekend, or the weekend before that. In other words be prepared for stuff that happened 2 weekends ago.
My Dad called a few weeks ago and asked if I could plan a surprise party for my step mom Jackie. A surprise party? That isn't surprising me? Where do I sign up?
The planning began, and if you ask me I think we pulled it off swimmingly. My sister Sarah made the cake, and I was in charge of decorations, invitations and food. Dare I say the food was delicious? It was delicious. Except for my cheesecake that somehow went awry. I don't like to talk about it...it makes me sad on the inside. All that wasted cream cheese and caramel. And there is the birthday girl. In all of her embarrassing glory. (Have I mentioned I am glad it wasn't me that was being surprised?) The other surprise was that my Dad flew in my two younger sisters for the party but somehow I only got a picture of one. You are gonna have to trust me that Meridith was there. (And she shredded cheese like it was no ones business.) Did I mention that the food was so good we had children hiding under tables hoarding salami? We take our salami seriously around these parts. Of course no birthday party is complete with out the lighting of candles and singing Happy Birthday. I was afraid at one point I might drop the cake or catch on fire, I couldn't decide which would be worse. Jackie was probably just shocked at my brute strength. I am shocked the fire from the candles didn't singe her eyebrows. Seriously all kidding aside. Look at the smoke coming off of that cake. The best part? They stayed another couple of days. My Dad and Laney worked their best to try to have matching faces in the photos. It turns out, our kids LOVE electronics. Not that this comes as a big surprise, but it was kind of like crack. They couldn't stay away from it. Which seems to be the case for my Dad and Jackie too. Have I mentioned how much I love, love, love when my family comes to visit? Well, I do. Because if you ask me, my family is the best. Hands down. Plus it doesn't hurt the coolness factor when they do little jigs at the top of the stairs and we catch it on film. And...I am fairly certain that the picture of my Dad will distract from the picture of me eating a giant number 50 cake.

Big Day

Today Laney turns 5. She couldn't be happier.
The prospect of cake, balloons, and presents has her giddy.
I have loved her every day for the last 5 years and I will love her for many many more.
