Naked Foot 5K
The race wasn't scheduled to start until 9AM, so we were able to get up at our regular time, which is always nicer than having to get up at the butt crack of dawn! I had my normal pre-race breakfast, a bagel with peanut butter and honey, then we loaded up the boys in the car and headed to the race site. There was a 1K kids fun run at 8:30, and my oldest was really excited about doing it, but he wanted one of us to run with him. My youngest has been really sick this past week, hence the lack of blogging, so he couldn't really run. The plan was to have my husband run with my oldest while I hung out with our youngest. Well, we had never been to the park where the race was before, so it took us a little longer to get there then expected. We pulled up as all the kids were getting lined up for the race. I really didn't want my son to miss it, so as soon as we parked, I grabbed his hand and ran to the start just as they blew the whistle. There were only about 4 other kids running, so it was pretty fun. My son loved it and towards the end, I asked him if he wanted to sprint to the finish by himself and he said yes! So, I stopped and watched him finish strong! It was awesome! He ran the entire way and I am so proud of him!
I know he looks a little grumpy in this picture, but he was pretty much laughing the entire time!
Rehydrating after his race! :)
As soon as the kid's race was done, I went to the packet pick-up table to get my stuff. They informed me that they no longer had my size small shirt (why does this always happen??), so once again, my husband got a new shirt.
There were no numbered bibs or timing chips. In fact, they wrote our race number on our calf. The race director made a statement about how he wanted the majority of the money to go to Soles4Souls, so he skipped the frills that other races have. It was actually really nice to race at such a small venue. I think there were maybe a total of 50 people running, and I am pretty sure I was the only one with a Garmin. Ha ha! It was so laid back, and just a nice change from the bigger 5Ks that we usually do. I was also surprised at just how many people were barefoot. If I had to guess, I would say 85% of the racers were barefoot, while the others had some type of Vibram Five Fingers on. Several people came up to me and asked me about my Bikilas and how I liked them. Everyone chatted with each other and talked about how long they had been running "barefoot." The race just had a really cool vibe to it.
Before the race. Notice the guys behind me without any shoes on?
Pretty soon it was time to line up. I was going to give my long sleeve shirt to my husband, but I forgot, so I ended up wearing it during the race. Ugh! The director counted down and we were off. I don't know if any of you have ever ran in a small race before, but it was awesome! There was so much room to run! The coolest thing about the race though was how quiet it was. Because everyone was either barefoot or running with VFFs, the only sound you could hear were people breathing. It was kind of surreal. It really is just you and the ground beneath your feet.
The course was a mixture of grass and paved trails. At one point, we ran across a soccer field while the sprinklers were going. Running through the water was fun and made me think about how much my boys love to run in the grass, barefoot, through the sprinklers. :)
I was surprised at how effortless my running felt. It felt awesome to run in my Bikilas and I found myself running a sub 8 pace pretty comfortably. Before I knew it, I was almost to the finish. The last 1/4M was a straight paved trail right to the finish. I decided to kick it in and finish strong! I saw my husband and boys on the side cheering me on and I waved to them as I passed. It was great! My husband took this action shot of my heading to the finish.
I crossed the finish line and stopped my Garmin and was completely shocked to see the time! I ran the 5k in 22:40, which was a 7:27min/mile pace. This time is 1 second slower than my 5k PR (22:39)! I couldn't believe it! But, truthfully, I think I could have gone faster. I ran this race for fun, and for an opportunity to be part of the first "barefoot" running race in CO. As strange as this may sound, when I was running, I was seriously not even thinking about "racing." I didn't feel like I pushed myself, which I wasn't really trying to do anyways. But, now my mind is spinning wondering just how fast I could have gone-ya know? It's exciting for me and I honestly can't wait to do another one!

A week in review and other things too
Training:
* This has been an interesting week because I have the Iron Girl Sprint Tri tomorrow and I wasn't sure what to do in terms of marathon training. I'm really just doing the tri for fun, but I definitely didn't want to run tons of miles and not even be able to perform well in the tri. So, I did a long run at the beginning of the week and a shorter run yesterday. I had the awesome 1hr. bike ride on Wednesday, and even managed to get in some nice, easy swims at the gym.
* I'm really excited about the tri tomorrow. But, what I'm not too excited about is having to get up at 4am in order to make it to Boulder (~1hr. drive) to do the whole packet pick-up thing before heading to the transition area. It should be an interesting drive. I really hope I don't fall asleep!
* I did my yoga class yesterday and let's just say that it totally kicked my ass! I am actually sore today from it in places that I haven't been sore in a long time. What is it about yoga poses that really effect those tiny muscle areas? Hopefully I won't still be sore for my race tomorrow!
* So, I am happy to say that I have made it to running 2 miles in my Vibrams and it felt great! I wanted to run longer, but held back because of my race. I can't wait to do a post on them, but I am waiting until I get a little bit more mileage out of them. There's a race coming up in Sept. called the Naked Foot 5k. It is the first ever barefoot running race in CO and I totally want to do it in my Vibrams! Plus, they are helping Souls4Soles, which is just a great organization.
Other things too:
* Patrick at The Road (A Multi-sport Blog) came up with a great idea for an Olympic tri virtual race! I am so excited about it! Check out the link above for more information about it!
* After I picked up my older son from Kindergarten yesterday he told me he drew a picture of me in art class. This is what he drew:
I don't really have red hair or green pants/shoes, but I love it just the same! :)
* Just an FYI: REI is having their Labor Day sale and clearance event and they have NUUN on sale. I totally stocked up! Oh, and I may or may not have bought some other totally unnecessary things while I was there too! :)
* So, I am totally addicted to Bonktown.com. There are some sweet deals on there sometimes! Check out what I picked up for $12!
That's right, a super cute, awesome pair of Ryders Adrenaline sunglasses! Woohoo! :)
* And, just for fun I have to mention this great gadget I picked up at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It is called The Cherry Chomper and it is perfect for pitting cherries (or olives!). My boys love it and are able to use it by themselves! All you do is put the cherry in the "mouth," push down on the head, and the pit falls into the clear container. It ROCKS! Seriously, I don't know how I managed without it! :)
* Don't forget to enter my giveaway for a chance to win a $40 gift certificate to CSN! Woohoo! I have to say though that I am blown away by the number of you that do not have a foam roller yet. I really thought I was one of the last few without one!
I hope you all have a great weekend! See you Sunday for my race report! :)

A Perfect Mother's Day
Yesterday truly was a perfect Mother's Day. :)
Mother's Day 5k Race Report:
The Mother's Day 5k wasn't scheduled to start until 9AM, but we wanted to give the boys a chance to play at the park before the race, so we got there a little before 8. Like I mentioned before, the race was held at City Park. It is a beautiful place with lakes, huge trees, and an awesome playground. The weather was absolutely beautiful and there wasn't any wind to be felt!
When we got to the venue, I picked up my timing chip and bib, and started walking around the little booths. I was so excited when I saw the "Run Like a Mother" booth. I'm sure most of you know about the book already, but if not, you can check it out here.
Dimity's sister was running the booth and she was selling t-shirts. So, look what I picked up:
I got a sticker for my training book, and a very cute, soft, and comfy shirt! :)
Anyways, back to the 5k. As we were getting ready to go to the park I asked my husband if he wanted to run the race with the boys. I like when they cheer me on at races, but I also know that this would have been a fun race for him too. He was wearing his running stuff and we had the jogger, so at the last minute he decided to run too! I took the boys to the park while he registered and they had a blast playing on all of the fun equipment.
Around 8:45 we headed to the start area. No one was lining up yet, and it was a little strange. Now, this was an inaugural event, so they were kind of scrambling to get things set for the beginning of the race. But, we decided to line up even though no one else was. As we lined up the announcer grabbed the microphone and told people to start heading to the starting line. All at once, hundreds of people started making their way over. It was kind of chaotic, but it all worked out. The great thing about this event was that it brought out tons of people and families. Everywhere I looked there were mothers having their picture taken with their kids. It was awesome, and it made for a very relaxed and happy racing atmosphere.
Finally, it was time to start. The gun went off and adrenaline took over and I just ran as hard as I could. Within the first mile I felt the effects of my hour long run yesterday. I know it probably wasn't the best idea to run an hour the day before a race I'm trying to PR, but whatever. Through the entire race this other girl and I were pretty much running together. Sometimes she would pull ahead, sometimes I would pull ahead, but it was great to have her push me. By mile 2 my mouth was so dry I couldn't even swallow. I could have stopped for some water, but I didn't want to take the time. Plus, it was only 3.1 miles so I knew I'd be fine. Finally, I had the finish line in my sights. The girl and I took off in a sprint and she ended up beating me by 2 seconds. It was an awesome race, but I was so happy to be done!
Here are my stats:
Time: 22:39 (7:18pace) A NEW PR! WOOHOO! :)
Sex Place: 9/376 (Top 10...another WOOHOO!)
Overall Place: 37/542
And, my husband did it in 26:56...with the jogger! Hooray for him!

Pre-race Mother's Day picture :)
Mother's Day:
After the race we headed out for our annual tradition of getting flowers and veggies for our garden. The weather had warmed up quite a bit and it was the most beautiful day! After working hard for the rest of the afternoon, here is what our front porch looks like:
Part of our vegetable garden. Tomatoes on top, herbs in the middle, carrots on the bottom. The stepping stones are another Mother's Day tradition. Each year I have the boys make their hand prints in the stones, then I use them in our garden. I love them and they always make me smile every time I see (step on) them. :)
All in all, it was just a perfect day. I got to spend Mother's Day with my family and I couldn't have felt more blessed. I am so lucky to have two wonderful, healthy boys. As cliche as this might sound, they really do make my life complete and I can't imagine my life without them.
I hope all the mothers out there also had a wonderful Mother's Day! :)

Tall Mom's Virtual 5k Race Report
Virtual 5k Race Report:
I registered for Tall Mom's Virtual 5k as a way to donate to Marathon for a Cure, and yesterday was the day for the race. I was planning on running with my boys in the jogging stroller, but we never got the chance. Clouds started rolling in, the winds picked up, and I really didn't want to be out and about with my boys if the sky decided to open up and rain. So, I opted to run on the treadmill instead. In honor of Mother's Day, I decided to let my boys decorate my bib. They used water colors to paint it and then decorated it with some sea stickers. Here it is in all of its beauty:
I got all of my stuff ready, set my boys up with an "Elmo's World" DVD and got running! I don't know about all of you, but I actually run faster outside than on my treadmill. So, I did the best I could. Here are my stats:
It was hot in my basement and my youngest kept asking me things about Elmo..ha ha. I found it hard to keep a fast pace, but I am happy with my 5k effort! :)

Valentine's Day 5K - Race Report
Valentine's Day 5k
Yesterday we got up around 6:45 with about 2 inches of snow on the ground, cloudy skies, and light snow still falling. The race wasn't scheduled to start until 10AM. So, because we were going to be running with our boys in the jogger we decided to wait and decide if we were going until closer to race time. Slowly, but surely, the snow stopped falling and the sun started peaking out from the clouds, but it was COLD! We decided to go to the race and just make the best of it!
Because we knew our boys would get cold sitting in the jogger, we gathered all sorts of things to ensure they would be warm and cozy. We made a big thermos of hot chocolate for them to have once the race started. We boiled some water and put it in two water bottles that we put on the side pouches next to them to act as heaters (this worked great by the way!). We dressed them in thermal underwear, wool socks, snow bibs, snow jackets, gloves, and warm hats. We also brought a big fleece blanket to drape over them in the stroller. Last, but not least, was the weather shield that goes over the stroller. It is awesome because it protects them from the wind, snow, or rain. Here is a picture of our boys in the jogger at the start of the race.
So, you can't really see our boys, but you can see the blanket and the awesome weather shield!
The picture was taken on a sidewalk, so you can see how much snow there was. Just walking to the starting line my feet were already cold even though I had on my awesome Smartwool socks. *Note: I guess regular running shoes are not meant to be worn in snow and slush. The mesh at the top of the shoe that works so well at keeping your feet ventilated when they're hot completely backfires when there is wetness! Luckily, the course wasn't this bad. They attempted to plow the snow, but there was lots of slush and ice.
We picked up our timing chips, attached our bibs, and waited at the back of the starting line. With a double jogging stroller, we always try to stay towards the back. I really had to use the bathroom, so I told my husband to just start when the gun went off and I would catch up to him. There was a long line of people waiting and I soon realized why. There were only 4 porta-potties! Can you believe it? Why can't race officials figure out that there needs to be more facilities for people!!
Anyways, as I was waiting in line the gun went off and everyone started running. I watched as my husband took off. Finally I was able to do my business and get on my way. I didn't bring my Garmin with me because we had timing chips and we were running with the stroller. Plus, after running 7.9miles yesterday I just wanted a nice, easy run. I did however start my Timex watch, just so I would know my time at the finish because I started late. I'm so glad I did this by the way because I realized there was no starting line timing mat. So, your recorded time is based on when the gun goes off, not when you actually cross the start line. What's up with that?? What is even the point of having timing chips? This was really my only gripe about the race.
Shortly after I started I caught up to my husband. He told me he had to use the bathroom (too much coffee!), so I took the jogger and kept running. Unlike a lot of people I've met, I actually enjoy running with the jogger. But, now that my boys are 2 1/2 and 4 1/2, I was pushing a lot of weight!!! Luckily, the course is pretty flat and I felt great running! I don't know what comes over me in a race, but I actually get pretty competitive. It's hard for me to run nice and easy when I see all of these people in front of me. When I run with my husband we run at a slower pace, but when it's just me I tend to push it. Suddenly, I was passing people while pushing the jogger and it felt awesome! A couple people made comments like, "good job momma" and "watch out, double load coming through," and I would smile, say thanks, and keep going.
Around the 1 1/2 mile mark there is a hill on the course. I was not looking forward to it, and my husband still hadn't caught up to us, so I knew I would have to push through it. It was tough, but I did it! Afterwards I was sucking wind, but the course turned flat again so I was able to regain control of my breath.
Around the 2 1/2 mile mark my boys started dropping stuff out of the jogger. I didn't notice, of course, but the people behind me kept yelling, "I think you dropped this" at which point I would stop, turn around, say a big "thank you," and grab whatever item had fallen. All in all, my boys dropped a water bottle, one glove, and a snack trap. At the last pick-up my husband finally caught up to us and took over pushing the jogger. He was a little tired from having to run hard to catch up with us (oops..sorry!) that once he took the jogger, he slowed down. He made a comment like, "Geez, you were flying!" to which I responded, "Well, let's keep flying because we're almost done!" I was partly kidding, but I wish I hadn't said that because he took off! It took all I had to keep up with him. My shins were burning and my legs were more tired then I realized from my long run yesterday. We hit the 3 mile mark, turned, and sprinted to the finish line! It was a great finish! The clock said 30:03, but according to my watch I did it in 28minutes! Not too bad for running with a jogger and making a few unscheduled stops!
We pulled off to the side, let the boys play in the snow, and took turns going around getting our goody bags and filling them with vendor stuff. It was a small race, but we got some great things in the goody bag. Here's a picture of some of the stuff. I love sport beans, so I'm excited to try these new ones out. Also, how cool is the hand sanitizer spray? That will definitely come in handy!
All in all, we had a good race! It felt great to get outside and exercise on a day that we probably would have just stayed inside and vegged by the fire. Our boys had a blast and stayed nice and warm the entire time!

5K fun with my boys!

I did my first 5K post half-ironman on Sunday! My husband was supposed to join me and push our two boys (4 and 2) in the jogger, but we were doing several remodeling projects and he decided to stay home to finish some of them up. Our house is in complete disarray and with two young boys that's not the best way to keep a house!! I decided to do the race anyways and push the boys myself. Now, during my half-ironman training I would often do short runs (30-45min.) while pushing my boys in the jogger. Although it was definitely harder to run while pushing 60+ pounds of weight, I was still able to do it because I was in pretty good shape. Yesterday however was the first time I had pushed the boys in the jogger in probably 2 months, so I was a little nervous about how it would go.
The race was at Washington Park, which by the way is one of the greatest parks in Denver to run at. I picked up my bib and timing chip and headed to the start. Panera was hosting a kids fun run, so I ran with both of my boys for a short out and back run. It was really cute and the boys had a blast. At one point Ronald McDonald himself ran next to us and cheered my boys on. :) Then, because I had the double jogger I positioned myself towards the back of the pack. I think the announcer said there were about 1500 people there...wow...so it was very congested during the first mile of the race. I was happy I had my BOB because I was able to go off-road and run instead of walking/running into the backs of legs with the stroller wheel (which I must confess I did a couple of times..sorry)!
After the first mile I got into my grove and felt pretty good. I was actually surprised about how easy it was to push the boys..that is until I came to the hilly parts. Those parts just about killed me! From my waist up I was practically horizontal trying to push the boys uphill, but I ran through it. Yeah! I finished the race in around 28min, which to me wasn't too bad considering I was pushing the jogger. It was nice to know that I didn't lose all of the fitness I built up for my half! Doing the race conjured up an urge to start training again and I think this week I'll start my "winter maintenance" tri plan...that is if we finish our projects!
