Christmas Day

Christmas this year was great, as you can see in the look on Gilbert's face! Gilbert wanted a mini RC helicopter which Santa happened to find. Only Santa did not seem to find a very sturdy one because it broke on its very first flight. Bummer!

This was Luke's very first Christmas! Although did not understand the concept, it was just another day to him, we are super excited for Christmas' to come!

This was a picture of Luke and me first thing Christmas morning, good thing Luke is a morning baby!

Christmas morning is always much more entertaining when there are little kids around. This year we were lucky enough to have my brother and his family visiting. It's been a long time since we have seen the excitement in a child's eyes on Christmas morning.

We were able to get a grandchild moment! My parents now have 5 grandchildren thanks to my sister and I contributing to the list this year. Before that my brother was taking care of giving my parents grandchildren single handedly.

We have a fabulous Christmas dinner put on by my mom, with all the traditional things which include turkey and cranberries. My personal favorite holiday dinner has always been ham and funeral potatoes.

Then in the evening on Christmas day we headed over to Gilbert's sisters' house to open presents with the Worle family. Gilbert's dad wanted to do a nativity. It was a given on who Luke, Gilbert and I would play. Gilbert was the only one who dressed up in his dad's robe to be Joseph. Mostly we all just sang Christmas songs and read the story. Gilbert was the only one who acted out their part as well.

Christmas Eve Festivities

We have a family tradition of going bowling on Christmas Eve. This year we started out by having lunch at Cafe Rio, a personal favorite! Then we followed by a serious competitive game of bowling.

My mom used to be on a bowling league when she attended BYU. My parents can be competitive when it comes to who has the highest score. Then Gilbert usually just throws the ball as hard as he can and beats them both. The first time he beat my mom, it was great. Now it is just funny to watch Gilbert beat everyone!

We played 2 games, and Gilbert won the first game. Apparently his magic of throwing the ball as hard as you can only works for the first game. On the second game I beat him by quite a considerable amount!

Whenever I bowl, it is always pure luck! That's why it was great that I beat Gilbert by so much on the second game we played!

This year was another fun year of bowling! Bowling alleys are great for babies because its so loud in there you can't hear a baby crying very much. Then you won't disturb others around you when your baby is crying. It's difficult to get out and do much with a new born, but this years bowling festivities were great!

This is a picture of Luke and cousin Bella! They are 7 weeks apart. Bella looks just like her daddy and Luke looks just like me. They don't know it yet, but they will be best of friends when they grow up!

Fight The Power

We often find Luke sleeping like this.

He holds his arm up and makes a fist while he is sleeping, and sometimes he does it while he is eating.

Luke has a thing with his hands. He does not like anyone touching them. He often holds his hands up by his face. He holds his binki sometimes too. He doesn't like you moving his fingers or his arms. He was born with one hand up by his face, so I can only assume he held his hands up by his face in the womb as well.

It's just funny to see what little babies do. Whenever Gilbert sees Luke doing this, or making a fist he says "FIGHT THE POWER, FIGHT THE POWER!"

What a funny personality he is already shaping out to have.

Welcome to Parenthood!

Our Thanksgiving week has been more than eventful. We started our week by leaving on Sunday for Phoenix, AZ for Brandi's grandpa's funeral. Starting on Monday evening Luke was not acting his normal self. He wouldn't eat and had a horrible achey cry. We attended the funeral on Tuesday and headed back for Idaho to spend the rest of our Holiday weekend with our families.

Luke traveled great in the car which ended up being about 25 hours total for the trip. When we arrived in Idaho, Luke still wasn't very interested in eating. He had been throwing up in the evenings and we knew something wasn't right. By Friday morning we decided to take Luke into the local Pediatrician in Shelley. Within 5 minutes they told us they were sending us to the hospital. Then over the next couple of minutes we went from, we're going to the hospital, to the hospital will send an ambulance for you, to you need to be life flighted down to Primary Children's Hospital. As parents, we were scared and didn't know how to process everything that was happening. To know that your child is in pain, and extremely sick, but there's not much you can do, is one of the worst feelings in the world.

We waited at the clinic in Shelley while the ambulance was sent for Brandi and Luke. The ambulance arrived and the flight crew came in and tried to hook him up to all their monitors. Trying to give a dehydrated 5 week old baby an IV is a difficult thing to do. It took them 4 tries to finally get an IV in. The nurse had to ask Gilbert to sit down because he was so pale, and they didn't need to take care of him too once he passed out.

The ambulance transported Brandi and Luke to the airport, where the very small airplane was waiting for them. Once they were in the air, it was a short flight down to SLC International airport, where another ambulance was waiting to transport them to Primary Children's Hospital.

Once they arrived at the hospital, Luke was admitted and the doctors immediately thought he had a condintion called Pylaric Stenosis. This would require surgery. However, there were a few tests to run to make sure, and being the Holiday Weekend, we would have to wait until the morning. Since they thought he needed surgery, the next 12 hours were miserable because they would not let us feed our child. He was hooked up to IV fluids only. It is extremly painful as a parent to watch your child weaken because of want of food.

By morning the tests were run, and he did not have the condition they first thought. After more x-rays and other tests, they concluded he had a gastrointestinal virus coupled with severe Acid Reflux. By Sunday, his virus had mostly run its course, and some reflux medicine was given.

We will be going home tomorrow, Monday, and hopefully we will never have to visit Primary Children's Hosiptal again. We are grateful that the worst is behind us. We are also grateful that the reason for our stay here is not as chronic or serious as some of the other patients we have met during our stay.

We have now figured out the one of the worst things about Parenthood is the unknown. We have decided one of the hardest things to go through is watching your child be in pain. What a horrible feeling that is! We found out that it is very easy for such a little baby to go from bad to very serious as far as sickness goes.

We are very grateful to have our son, and we are grateful he is doing better.

Scenes from an AZ funeral

As Luke continues to get older he opens his eyes more often. This was one of those times.

My two babies

Here's my two babies taking a nap together. Brandi doesn't get much sleep lately, so when Luke sleeps, she needs to take what she can get.

He likes to eat about every hour and a half to two hours, and then likes to fuss for another 30 min after feeding, which means there isn't much time for mommy to get her nap.

She's up all throughout most of the night, and then goes most of the day as well. She's so devoted to him.

One of the reasons I married her was because I knew she would be a good mom. I wish I could do more. Sometimes I feel guilty because all I do is go to work and can't help out. Even when I am around, I can't feed him due to lack of "equipment". I have however changed like 4 diapers, so that's something... :) I love my family!

Happy Baby!

Luke gets this look on his face a lot.

He will pucker his lips, and it looks like he is thinking really hard!

I finally caught a smile with his eyes open!
(thanks for the tip Dana)

They grow up so fast!

I tried to get pictures of him smiling, but the flash always makes him close his eyes.

I now understand why everyone says "they grow up so fast." It's only been 3 weeks, but already he has changed so much.

I just want him to stay little and precious forever! Even though it means some serious sleep deprivation.

At first we thought he looked just like his daddy. When we looked at baby pictures of Gilbert, we determined this is not true.

It will be curious to see who he takes after more.

2 weeks Stats

We took him in today for his 2 week check up. I can't believe it's already been 2 weeks!

He is still just a little guy. He now weighs 7 lbs. 12 oz. and is 20.1 in. long. He is in the low 30s percentile for all his stats.

He already has such a personality. Some things we have learned about our little guy:

He LOVES to eat, and eat often!

He does not like being cold.

He hates getting his diaper changed.

He knows when you try to set him down, he's smart already.

He has already figured out how to suck his thumb.

He likes to sleep with his parents, he is afraid of the dark :)

He snores, and snorts at you when he gets mad.

He likes the back of his hand rubbed and he sticks out his pinky finger for you to rub that too.

He has to have his hands up by his face at all times, don't even try to wrap him up tight in a blanket with his arms down.

Best of all, he is the cutest little guy EVER!

We are so happy to have him! Even with all the lack of sleep, he is worth everything!

More Pics

He has his daddy's big toe, but these are some pretty long monkey toes and long fingers!

Third day: Still cute! He always has to have his hands up by his face. He was born with one hand up by his face and had to wave hello.

A Few More

Just a couple of more photos.

Luke looks better all cleaned up and "ungoopified"

I was still a little shaken from the whole "my life just changed forever, and the responsibility is kind of overwhelming" thing. Lucky for me I was wearing "my brown pants".

Better luck fishing

Me and my fishing buddy (Quinn, a co-worker of mine), biked in to Deer Creek reservoir about 3.5 miles along a trail next to the Heber Creeper tracks. We used to be much more into mountainbiking, but this last summer, we've been getting into fishing as well, so it was fun to incorporate the two, bike in, do some fishing, and bike back out. We packed up a backpack of our fishing equipment, and took off.

This is a shot of the lake. It was pretty chilly, so the boaters weren't out, and it made the lake really calm. It really was quite beautiful. We road up after work, and didn't leave until about 9:00. This late in the year, the sun goes down at about 7:30 or 8:00, so by the time we left that evening, it was pretty well pitch black. We had to bike out by the light of the moon. We should have brought flashlights...

The fishing was pretty good when we first arrived. Quinn and I both caught a "delicious bass" very soon after arriving. These weren't trophy fish by any means, but based on our previous outings, we were already having better luck.

Everything was good until it hit the sinuses.
