Barack Speaks on the 40th Anniversary of the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Speaking in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this morning Barack commemorated the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, calling on Americans to continue King's lifelong pursuit of social and economic justice.

"Many, many years ago, I was a young White House Assistant, when President Johnson at first wanted Martin Luther King to call off the marching, demonstrations, and protests. The civil rights movement had met massive resistance in the South, and the South, because of the seniority system, controlled Congress, making it virtually impossible for Congress to enact laws giving full citizenship to black Americans, no matter how desperate their lives."

"...I finally realized that what had gone wrong in the Nixon White House was a meltdown in personal integrity. Without it, we failed to understand the constitutional limits on presidential power and comply with statutory law.
In early 2001, after President Bush was inaugurated, I sent the new White House staff a memo explaining the importance of never losing their personal integrity. In a section addressed specifically to the White House lawyers, I said that integrity required them to constantly ask, is it legal? And I recommended that they rely on well-established legal precedent and not some hazy, loose notion of what phrases like “national security” and “commander in chief” could be tortured into meaning. I wonder if they received my message."

Yesterday, the court switched sides and told two cities that they cannot take modest steps to bring public school students of different races together. Kokesh to Marines: "This Is Not Going Away"
(VIDEO) Truthout reports:"The Marine Corps is removing Adam Kokesh from the Individual Ready Reserve just days before his military commitment would have expired. He will be receiving a "general" discharge, which is less than he received last November when leaving active duty. Truthout's Geoffrey Millard and Scott Galindez followed Kokesh from a press conference in Washington, DC on June 1, to his hearing in Kansas City, Missouri on June 4. Stay tuned for interviews with Adam Kokesh and Liam Madden, who is facing similar action...."
