Friday night was Game 1 of the city softball league, Provo Marriott edition.
So weeks back 2 of my friends at work decided we needed a softball team. I said no, and then they promised me Provo Bakery forever if I jumped on board. From that point on, yes, I was on board. A few sign up sheets were passed around and next thing we knew there were like 20 people on our team. Then as Game 1 approached suddenly people ohhh, like, had that thing or whatever and yes people flaked left. and. right. Especially every last girl who had signed up.
Moving along.
Thursday night at the Cambridge party I gave my friend Alex the once-over and realized that she was a) not a flake and b) one of the few girls who might actually be able to kick my butt. I mean, that is a list of maybe 4 people: Mom, Cass, Michelle Obama (you don't have to like her politics to admit she has crazy arms), and Jillian Michaels. But I digress. Alex said YES she would be on the team.
We showed up for practice Friday an hour before the game and I felt pretty good because I am not athletic but Alex is so I was fairly convinced she would make me look good. And she did. Unfortunately, as the 9:15pm game time rolled around we suspected that we did not have enough people on our team. Because we did not. We had Kahili and Ryan, the captain and co-captain, Mr. Garfield our GM, and Ilene, the housekeeper who the day before had agreed to come because I begged her and then drove her home in the rain so she was sort of in my debt. I wasted little time calling in that debt (I rarely do) and GOOD THING because turns out Ilene, sweet Grandma Ilene, is freaking good at softball.
Jonathan showed up with Alex's husband, Jared, around 9:10 and we told them they were on the team. And that's how the Provo Marriott softball team did not forfeit its first ever game.
I had successfully avoided a softball game since 2001 when I played a few games with the PV stake to scam on their Young Men, but I must admit, the game itself was too much fun. I was catcher so all I had to do defensively was make sure that the ball made it back to our pitcher.
Nailed it.
Offensively, Jonathan and I had an RBI and a run, respectively. We creamed the opposing team for the first 40 minutes or so until they scored something like 8 runs in the last inning, and I don't really have more to say about the game after that.
Do we look cold? WE ARE. Bellman Ryan took this picture. He had just batted and his hands were shaking so badly from nerves or adrenaline or endorphins or something that he couldn't hold the phone still. True story.
Jonathan snapped this almost-action shot. This is an accurate representation of what I did most of the game. And of the high water yoga pants that I wore the entire time. When I wear them barefoot around the house they are the perfect length, I swear.
