Harvest and GTTC

Not a lot to harvest this week.
Waiting on the peas. I pulled some turnips and greens. They were not doing so well and I could tell they were not going to get much bigger. The squash continue to come in. Check Daphne's Dandelions for more harvests.

I made an excellent dish of caramelized onions (not from the garden) radishes and patty pan squash sauteed in balsamic vinegar that were great as a warm dish. The next day, I used it as a topping on a green salad. My first Garden to Table Challenge hosted by Greenish Thumb. Take a look at some other great garden dishes. YUM.

Last and Harvest

A few months back, which seems like yesterday, I posted about firsts. The first harvest is always so exciting. I have come to one of my last harvests. I pulled out most of the garden this past weekend and will, for the first time, plant garlic. This is always a little sad but a new crop and the frozen vegetables will keep us happy for part of the winter. I still have a few turnips, tomatoes and carrots left in the garden.

Harvest Monday

I am so excited to be back again this week. Thanks again to Daphne's Dandelions' Harvest Day. The holiday last week got in the way. What an exciting week. The growth in the garden is visible by the eye. I look at in the morning and everything is at least an inch taller in the evening.
Tomato fruit are on almost all plants, the bush beans are just about to bloom, the pole beans are leaping and I am sure that my structure will not be big enough. The cucumbers are beginning to climb and I can see some fruit.
I have never considered  weighing my harvest as many other's do but I am beginning to see why one would do so. This is the harvest for the week:

Swiss Chard: two bowls full

Two turnips out of my daughters plot. She loved pulling these out.

   

More radishes and lettuce, one onion to see what was happening. No, not the tomato.

Pinched basil, cilantro tops and chamomile flowers.

The zucchini are getting bigger but the crook neck can't seem to open male and female flowers at the same time so all of the fruit are dropping off. If anyone has thoughts about why this is happening, I would appreciate it.  I would be happy to hand pollinate if they were open at the same time.

Last but not least are my peppers. What's happening?????

Now the Wait

Now comes the hard part.
I sit and wait for more stuff to happen. Flowers are on the tomatoes. The crook neck squash have fruit on them and I am hoping for male flowers to open for pollination.

Swiss chard is beginning to leap and I should be able to harvest some leaves in less than two weeks. This picture was from yesterday and today, it feels twice as big.
My chamomile is like a weed and ready to harvest. As long as I leave a few flowers on the plant it will reseed and plants will come up in a few weeks. These are in my daughter's plot and they make for a wonderful ladybug and butterfly stop.

My daughter planted two turnips - (not sure why). I can see the beginning of the bulbs surfacing. It seems so early but I will be so happy to have a root vegetable. The leaves look beautiful. This is the first year for my purple iris and it is just as gorgeous as the yellow ones which you can reference here.

Lastly, the other cat must make an appearance. Perched on the edge and always ready to pounce on a butterfly. If she could only keep the moles away.
