One Room Challenge - Eclectic Great Room Reveal

Whew, we've crossed the finish line!

Thanks so much for stopping by to check on the One Room Challenge reveal of my

client's great room! And, a huge thank you to Linda @ Calling It Home for creating this

event that brings our community together to share an abundance of inspiration!

I'm sharing my client's great room. Their request was a cozy, comfortable space

for their family of four, and Stella the fur baby, to lounge, watch tv, read and hang

out together. The chic mom didn't want to forgo style for comfort and asked me to

incorporate glam, gold, pops of color and zebra print.

They were up for using my favorite, Craigslist finds! :)

This leather chair was one of our first Craigslist scores. I knew it would make a great spot for

reading tucked back in this corner and loved the warmth against our crisp white background.

This photo shows the best representation of the lively color of our Zahra Caravan rug from

World Market.

We used two cushy sofas and several squishy down pillows, perfect for everyone

in the family to comfortably stretch out!

They owned this vintage marble top table and loved the size and sturdiness for propping

feet up. My client covered the golden tone wood with a coat of Rub 'n Buff in Gold Leaf.

We reupholstered a special chair that had been in the family for years in Ralph

Lauren zebra print, for a dramatic, yet timeless statement piece.

We knew we wanted an antique piece in this space and originally planned to use a secretary

they owned, but fell in love with the details of this one from Craigslist when we were there

to pick up a console. Pairing it with a modern lucite chair gave us the eclectic style we

were going for.

They owned this large round side table, it was an ideal size between the sofas, but it also

had a marble top. We turned the top over, painted it all a high gloss white, and trimmed

the edge in gold Rub 'n Buff for a pretty detail (more info to come).

The ornate gold mirror was another Craigslist find, and the perfect dose of glam we

were hoping for to pair with our streamlined sconces.

We layered a special piece of artwork created by a family member. A a simple

frame and large mat keeps it from competing with the mirror.

Yet another Craigslist score was this console we used behind the sofa, it faces the

kitchen. When I spied it on Craigslist I thought the diagonal pattern (which was originally

wood) would be pretty if made to look like metal. My client went to town with

Rub 'n Buff, and we love the interest it added.

The oversized distressed media cabinet balances the the 75" TV and including the

industrial style compliments the eclectic mix of furniture pieces.

It's been a joy to help create this space for such a sweet family, and so fulfilling to see

them using it exactly as they envisioned. This photo of Stella sums it up perfectly! :)

happy friday and best of the nest...

Ahhh, Happy Friday everyone!!

Best of the Nest came around so quickly this month and caught us all off guard,

not to worry, we've just decided to postpone it a week. So, July's BOTN will be

next Friday, August 1st! Got it? We can't wait to see what you've been working on!

Several of you asked where I found my planter head that I used in the kitchen reveal,

it was Homegoods, and I spied another one last week and couldn't resist. She has a

sweet feminine profile with her hair pulled back in a bun, unfortunately it's a bit hard to tell

since I got carried away with her planter head. Don't let her demure look fool you,

she's got a sassy personality, and knows how to start the weekend off right! :)

one room challenge...kitchen reveal

The day we've all been waiting for!

Thank you all so much for following along being such a great support during the

last six weeks, all of your kind comments truly keep me going!!

As always, a huge thank you to the mastermind behind the One Room Challenge,

Linda @ Calling it Home,

I like to think of her and the ORC as motivator extraordinaire!

If you remember back at Week One I set out to give our kitchen a facelift, transforming

the Tuscan look from eight years ago into a more modern space. All on a budget - meaning

I'd be working with what I had and getting my DIY mojo on!

Never underestimate the power of paint!!

I painted everything you can imagine - cabinets, hardware, tile, hood, chandeliers!

BEFORE

Calacatta Marble was my choice for our island countertop...it's Formica!

I know what you're thinking, but look at it, Formica has come a long way!

I love it and can't wait to share the details with you.

I was so tempted to ditch our huge 4' x 5' chalkboard in an effort to be more cutting edge,

but when a friend said, 'We love coming over and checking out what's on the chalkboard,

it's so you.' I knew keeping it was right. It's fun to make people feel special by a simple

message.You all know Linda, but Lori is my dear friend that gave moral support and

manual labor during the challenge. :)

I'll be sharing the scoop on this beautiful plug-in swing arm lamp from Lamps Plus

and how you can avoid using an electrician.

One of my favorite styles to mix is modern with traditional, the abstract artwork from

Minted paired with blue and white ginger jars in my lighted cabinet is a pretty statement.

Three framed needlepoint florals from Mr. Simple's grandma fit perfectly here.

DIYs for the hood and super easy valances to come.

It's been such an honor to be included with these talented ladies,

I knew from day one they would all rock this challenge, let's go see!

diy settee reupholster...

Do you remember this settee I snagged on Craigslist last month?

It finally made it to the top of my DIY list on the weekend!

BEFORE:

I love the mix of antique and modern and was thinking of a geometric print, but you

were right it would have competed with the ornate details. In the end this heathered

black and white stripe won out, suggested by this cute blogger and mom to six!

It's neutral, modern and has a unique detail.

I had trouble deciding on a pillow, surprised? :)

At first...I loved this unique panel I found at the fabric store and made a pillow,

yikes it wasn't my favorite. But I have a new plan for it.

Then I remembered these bolsters that came with my sofa, I hadn't used them in years.

I like the geometric, and think it works, but wouldn't it be fun to pull them out in the fall?

I fell for the popular watercolor floral that looks like a burst of spring! It's from TJ Maxx.

The detail I mentioned is a twisted black and white trim sewn between each stripe.

It was a super easy re-upholster, in my haste to get to this project going I forgot to take a

photo of the original fabric removed. After removing the nailheads I used the original fabric

as my pattern, being sure to center the stripes before cutting.

Using a staple gun, staple the fabric around the primeter, going from front to back and

side to side, making certain the stripes are staying straight and the fabric is taut.

I was in a pickle when I got to the back, a piece of wood runs the length of the settee

and my staple gun wouldn't fit between it. I ran to Ace Hardware

~~because it was close to lunch and they have those little bags of popcorn~~

to get some upholstery tacks as an alternative to the staples.

After finishing tacking down the fabric on the back I was ready for the gimp.

The original was in good shape when I removed it, so I just used it again.

Working around the perimeter, use the gimp to cover the staples and upholstery tacks, I

secured it with nailheads about every four inches. (The original bench had them about

every inch, I'll spare you the details but I ended up without mine that I'd purchased...ugh

I wasn't up for another hour round trip today.)

So mine may get more nailheads another day!

Pretty straightforward!
