When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

I've always really loved these verses and my attention has always been grabbed by the use of the word 'work', three times in three little verses.
The work of God is to believe in the one he has sent. I've repeated those words over and over in my head wondering...what does that really mean? What does that look like?
Work is something you do everyday. Something you have to put effort into...Everyday. Believing in the One He has sent - Jesus. And standing on the promises He has made!
To do the works God requires I must first believe in the one He has sent. It takes work to pray and pray persistently - but I must believe the one who I am praying to can (and will) answer!
It takes work to worship but I must believe and trust the one I am worshiping.
It takes work to go out and serve but I must believe that this work is not for 'food' that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.
It takes work to obey God, but I must believe that He is who He says He is, abide in Him, remember that believing in Him is the reason for all this work and in the midst of it that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. :)
