Kickin' Kids offers a flag football season. Ethan and Zach both wanted to participate. We were able to get them on the same team and had a good time watching them play. They had an undefeated season and Ethan was probably the fastest kids on the field.
We had two of our neighbors (Micah and Bryce) playing too, but they were all on different teams. We decided that next season we need them to all play on the same team.
Wyatt, Mallory and Darcy loved being able to wander around the park with the Peterson girls (Kylie and Brooklyn). Wyatt did tell us that he wants to play next season.

First Day of School 2013
Well, another summer has come to a close. I am sad to see it end, we had a lot of fun together. Ethan and Zachary are at the middle school this year and Wyatt and Mallory are at the elementary school.
Everyone had a great day! Ethan and Zach are both happy with their schedules. Ethan has several friends in each class. Zach knew people in about half of his classes. Wyatt was thrilled to have Jason, Seth and Bryce in class with him again this year. Mallory did great! She is so excited to have the same teacher that Wyatt did in 1st grade. She knew a couple of kids from last year. So far, we are off to a good start!!

A first
Zach swallowed an Advil today. I know it doesn't sound too exciting but we have some pill swallowing-averse children. This is a big day! Too bad he has to have pneumonia.

Mallory's pictures
A couple of Mallory's drawings from school. One of them is a picture of a dead Mallory in a graveyard saying "me ded fram irlind" (me dead from Ireland). Not sure what they are teaching her about St. Patrick's day. The other one is happier. A leprechaun and a rainbow.

Rainbow cookies
We made rainbow cookies for Kindergarten Cooking Moms today. We made up the dough and colored it before school. We let the kids take a spoonful of 4 different colors and then had them shape them into spiral cookies. Then we took them down to the cafeteria and cooked them in their ovens. I decided that I want a convection oven someday. We were able to cook 4 cookie sheets of cookies in 5 minutes! That would be a huge time saver! I am going to have to try my mom's next time we go out to visit.
We had plenty of extra dough so we made them for Family Home Evening tonight. I gave a lesson about Noah, the flood and the rainbow. (Made me feel all creative)

PACE
5th grade is the year that students learn about civics and government . The students are put into five groups per class and are given a constitutional topic to research. They each have to write a speech and be prepared to answer questions as if they were taking part in a congressional hearing. Zach's topic question was 'How does a responsible citizen promote the common good? When he first started working on the speech I talked with him about needing to cite the Declaration of Independence and/or Constitution and find current events that related to his topic. He acted all annoyed at me for some of my suggestions and I finally gave up on trying to help. I was glad that when all was said and done he did take my advice (whether it was because of me or not I'm not sure but I will take credit for it). He did an excellent job giving examples and relating it to current events. His teacher told me one day in the hall that she was really impressed with Zach's work on the PACE project. It made me smile.
