A Beautiful Mind.

I can whole-heartedly say that I have not had any regrets in my life thus far. I say this because I have been taught that everything that happens to me, good or bad, is a learning experience – a time to reflect and realize it is an opportunity for growth. I have strived to live a GOOD life so that when I lay my head on my pillow each night and it is just me with my thoughts, I can look back and know that the day was lived well. However, I am only human and I have fallen short many times.

Shortly before my dad left this life to go onto the next, I found ‘Know Me’ journals. It is a journal that contains 50 questions and they are to be passed along to special people in your life for them to record bits and pieces of their journey here. I wanted so badly to get the journal to have both my mom and dad fill out so that I could always carry their stories with me wherever I went. When I went back to get them, they were gone. I decided that I would just give the journals to them as Christmas presents. I did not know then my Christmas this year would not include one of the most influential and important people in my life. And so I bought the journals the other day….I couldn’t bear to buy just one so, still, I bought two for my parents, one for myself, and another for a beautiful soul in my life. It breaks my heart to know that the pages of my dad’s journal will not be written in…the pages will sit empty….there will be white space where there SHOULD be so many stories, life lessons, words of wisdom, bits of advice, jokes, adventures of a world traveled, recipes that no one else knows, songs I long to hear, but don’t know the titles to…a love story, two babies that were born and what they meant to him, a company that has stood for 20 years because of his hard work and dedication…oh these are the things that I do regret not knowing in their entirety.

So, today, yes, I do have one regret and that is that I did not dive deeper into a beautiful mind. How I wish I could sit with him a bit longer and see what he would have written. I would've loved, for one day, to see the world viewed through his eyes. He was a man who thrived on chaos, loved traveling, had an absolute and never-ending hunger for knowledge, whose mind was a sponge. He remembered every tiny and minute detail of every story he ever told…exact dates, locations, names of restaurants he had eaten at 30 years ago….he could tell you any title to any song, the artist, what album it was off of, and what year it was released…without fail. He LOVED learning new things. I’m not sure how one person could watch The History Channel and the Discovery Channel and remember every fact of every topic viewed. He had a passion for new technology both at work and at home. When the iPhone came out he suckered all of us into watching the Apple tutorial on the iPhone and watched the tutorial himself 17 times. He would sit in his office with his Bose headphones on and watch it over and over so that he knew every last aspect of the phone when his arrived….and he did. He was very much an atypical male…he truly truly enjoyed shopping with my mom and I. So many times I would come home and he would say, “Be ready to go at 9:00. I’m taking my two favorite girls shopping today.” He would come home with bags of cooking supplies from William Sonoma, clothes for my mom, new gadgets for his computer, old classic rock CD’s, soaps and kitchenware from Anthropologie. The man had exquisite taste I tell you. Still, material things were fluff for him. The thing that utterly brought him happiness was being surrounded by people. He was a people person…loved to entertain…loved talking to strangers, engaging in deep conversation, telling jokes and stories of a life lived to its fullest. Wherever we went, he was making friends. There was just...something about him… he was such a selfless person. There were times I called him complaining about someone who had been mean to me or treated me unfairly. He ALWAYS said, “Krysta, you don’t know the battles they’re fighting or how heavy the weight is that they carry” and that was it. He would not feed into my need for him to tell me that I should fight back….and so I never did….and I am a better person today because of it….because of him.

Last year at this exact same time of the year, my parents surprised me by coming to visit me unannounced. I came back from running errands at work and there they stood...in my office with huge smiles across their faces. I had NO clue they were coming and so I said to my dad, “I can’t believe you guys came to see me because I’ll be home for Thanksgiving in three weeks” to which he replied, “So. I missed you.”

So today, my rollercoaster is coasting. I am staring at his journal and hoping that maybe one day I will feel okay in writing what I remember of his life in it. I know I won’t be able to fit his huge presence in the small white pages, but I can sure try….

Heading back home. He turned and said, "Uh guys...I sink I'm getting a lil tired." :)

If I had to describe our weekend I do believe "sugar high" would sum it up completely. We did it all...the pumpkin patch...picking the perfect pumpkin, carving said pumpkin, making Halloween cupcakes, trick-or-treating...the whole works. By the time we finished we had a toddler with no weekend naps and coming off of a complete overdose of sugar...that was a treat in itself let me tell you. Of cooouurrse Michael had to go as a shark...duh. What else would he go as? His obsession with sharks is very much still in full effect. I must say, though, that he is quite possibly the cutest shark I have ever seen. Brady and I had smiles on our faces all afternoon as we watched him say "trick-or-treatin'" and seeing his face light up when he received his candy. These moments....these are the moments I always want to remember...

I love this picture. There are 5 girls in Jenny's family and they are all sassy. Brandon's sister was standing on the end watching all of the madness so I told her to give me attitude like, "Jenny...what have you gotten me into!"

Brandon and Jenny -
I don't think you could've asked for a day that was any more perfect. The weather, the location, the amazing people you surrounded yourself with on your wedding day and the beautiful two of you. I had to narrow down the list of pictures as to not share your whole wedding album on this post alone! Thank you so much for asking me to be there with you catching all of your special moments. I had such a wonderful time! A happy forever after for the two of you...

Guess who came to play today...

Photobucket
...Miss Madison!
Our friend Robert brought over his little girl Madison today and you can see precisely why we didn't want her to leave. Her little cheeks were red when she left as they were getting squished and kissed all afternoon! Robert, you may drop her off anytime, but I can't make any promises that you'll get her back. Thank you so much for bringing her over to play and thank you Miss Maddie for putting so many smiles on our faces today!

Two Months...

Photobucket

Boppa and his beloved Luka

Quite honestly, I don’t think there is a single, solitary thing that could ever prepare anyone for the overwhelming amount of emotions that come after losing someone. There are no books, no websites, no counselors, no doctors, no peers that could ever properly explain to you how devastating it will be…how it will inconceivably alter your entire outlook on life…how it will change you.
I think today is actually harder, if that’s even possible, than the day we lost him. The blur has lifted and reality has settled in. It is a fact of our life now, that he will not be coming home. It is something I have struggled to grasp…how we parted that day as if there would be so many more days to follow. I had so much to tell him…things I had actually written down to make sure I remembered…and yet they went unspoken.
My emotions on this journey are so unfamiliar to me. At times, I am uncomfortable being with my own self as I never know what the next moment will bring. The anger, the confusion, the guilt, the extreme lows you pray will pass through quickly. However, there are many many bits of happy entangled in there too and for that I am ever so grateful. We have had many of those happy bits lately and yet all I can think is that I wish, so much, he were here.
I struggle to put my thoughts into words today. My heart is hurting. It has been two months today…

Missing, missing, missing….

Running.

I have a confession. I am a music junkie. I get it from my father. He had thousands of songs on his iPod, a 300 disc changer packed full of CD's, CD's stacked in boxes, on bookshelves, in bags...It's quite ridiculous really, but we're both suckers for a good tune.
It's not often that a song makes my heart flutter, but I received a CD from Miss Erin in Chi-town entitled 'Bliss' (...and 100% bliss it was honey) that she burned for me and on it was Ms. Sonya Kitchell. I google hounded her because I loved her...she's got a bit of Joni Mitchell going for her. I fell madly and deeply in love with 'Running' (link to right)and well, it's pretty much my overall mood lately.
Poor Kelly. I drag her into my office 18 times a day. I make her listen to songs over and over again. If she speaks during any of the lyrics, I will re-start the song. She always asks me what color I think of when a song plays...usually it's purple velvet with twinkle lights, pink glitter, sky blue with a hint of yellow, or just full-on dull gray. So she asked the usual question and no color came to mind...just a girl sitting in her vintage New York apartment on her old, velvet olive green couch found at a thrift shop...lights are low...French doors to her bedroom are open, the bed unmade...she's got a glass of wine in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Trippy.
Sorry peeps, that's all I got today.
Happy weekend!

The last lesson.

Photobucket

...Brady's parents were coming the next day. I wanted everything to be perfect. The floors were spotless, not a speck of dust to be seen, all sheets were washed, mints adorned the pillows, Aquafina water accompanied the night stands, and white towels laid perfectly folded ready to be used. I would soon find out that all of our hard work would not matter. 12:26 A.M. the phone rang. I was on the computer getting information I needed for a shoot early the next day. Brady was watching TV waiting for me to come to bed. Mom's cell phone number scrolled across the screen. It took me time to register the number. She never called that late. I knew. Before she even said the words I knew. They staggered out of her mouth one by one each word a bit more jagged than the next. By the time she finished I was on my knees...
I have pleaded with God...begged and bargained...made promises that I would do so many things differently if He would just honor this one request and bring you back. I have yelled at Him..shouted and screamed...asked how He could possibly do this to me. To us. How He could change our entire lives in one teeny tiny blink of an eye. The truth is I know He did not do this to us. I know that you have always been His and just as He put you on this earth, He would decide when He wanted to call you home. That night Aunt Cheryl rushed over as helicopters hovered over the house ready to take you...and just as she walked into the house, they flew away. When she told me of how she watched them go it made me ill. ..to know we would not need them...that they wouldn't be taking you that night...that God had already made the decision to take you.
Mom e-mailed me today and asked me 'what if'? What if we had done things differently? What if she had screamed at you to come back...insisted you be here? She was busy calling the ambulance...would you have heard her? I believe with all of my being that you would not have come. Not because you didn't love us and didn't want to come back, but because where you are is far more beautiful than this earth we live in...because you always said you would be ready when you were called...because your faith was so strong...because apparently there is a lesson for each of us to learn.
I talked with my grief counselor, Linda, last week. She ended our session by telling me that this is the last lesson you will ever teach me and it will be the most important one. I hope I can make you proud Papa...size 13 shoes never did look good on me...you know I've always been a "heels" girl. :(
I am MISSING you more than you could ever possibly know...
Forever and ever and always,
Your Cowcie

Oh, I had so much fun with Miss Grace this morning. She was such a great start to my day as she had me continuously laughing. She is in the stage where she is saying the cutest things and has the cutest mannerisms. She fell in love with my Tiffany's blue suitcase (I can't blame her...she has exquisite taste) and I feared I wouldn't get it back. However at the end of the session we made a trade - suitcase for Dora stickers and fruit snacks. Quite even I'd say!

Grace, you are such a beautiful beautiful girl honey, and you've got such a beautiful Mommy and Daddy. Thank you so much for letting me come over to play with you today! You put a permanent smile on my face this morning sweet girl.

*Please excuse blogger. My pictures always look grainy to me on here and they aren't on my files at all. Urrgghhh... :( *

Tea for Two.

Photobucket

Well, I don't think it's any secret that I think she's a dream and now I'm afraid she's gone out and made me love her even more....thee ever lovely Ms. Sheye Rosemeyer. Lately, the days seem to blur together...one lapping over into the next without me even noticing. Not Tuesday. No, Tuesday I remember very distinctly. It is the day I became the owner of two beautiful pink tea cups with CROWNS! I opened the box with my jaw dropped and tears falling. They are quite possibly the most perfect things I have ever seen and I can't stop peeking at them.
Sheye - I have yet to figure out how you ended up on your side of the world and I ended up in mine. If it were up to me, there would have already been many days spent lolling at Anthropologie, sipping wine, and gabbing about photography for hours on end. ...and yet, still, I have come to adore you regardless of the thousands of miles between us. Darling girl, you know my door is always open and the day you knock on it I have a comfortable lounge and a pink tea cup with your name written all over it. Until then...
Thank you for being such a beautiful part of my days...
Yub,
Krysta
