Todd Rundgren: Dallas 2012 (VG+ Aud) FLAC

Review: Billed as a "greatest hits" tour, Todd Rundgren's show last night at the House of Blues was a textbook presentation of his professionalism. Even dogged by a nasty cold and throat issues, Rundgren and his band delivered over two hours of classic power-pop and neo-soul, including classics "Can We Still Be Friends," "I Saw the Light," "Couldn't I Just Tell You" and "Hello, It's Me."
In between the expected fare, Rundgren threw in some pleasant surprises, including a great rendition of Smokey Robinson's "Ooo Baby Baby." Besides the aforementioned pop hits, the night was mostly devoted to Rundgren's obsession with soul and blues. His take on Robert Johnson's "Kind Hearted Woman" packed a wallop.
Early on, Rundgren appeared weary. He apologized for his voice, saying, "Just pretend you're at a Meatloaf show." As the night progressed, Rundgren adapted to his lower register and turned songs like "Soul Brother" and "Determination" into funky excursions that mixed Barry White with new wave. The surprisingly packed Monday night crowd was appreciative of just about anything Rundgren had to offer.
Even at 63, he continues his chameleon-like ways. Rundgren can (and has) done almost everything, from a cappella to electronica, and refuses to capitulate to any single genre. There may not be anyone else like him. He is that singular a talent. Let's just hope he takes some Nyquil and gets some rest.

We were in the 1st row of the balcony, in front of the stage left nspeaker stacks. Sound and recording were very good from that location. Crowd around us was very well behaved.
Todd was a real "trooper" for this show as he battled thru his "ailments" to put on a very good show (IMHO). Enjoy the recording folks.

November 1974 (probably the 16th since they were in Ok. city on 11/14, the Univ. of Texas in Austin, Texas on 11/15 and Baton Rouge, La. on 11/17. they played in Monroe, La. on 11/19 so maybe they played Dallas on the 18th? but probably not.

recorded by J.C. (thank you for sharing the 1st gen. copy in the late 1970's) Do not sell this recording. Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly. This thing's lost enough already after 36+ years.

OU: the recording is quite heavy on the bass and lower midrange frequencies, typical of a large room and an old small tape recorder audience tape. probably recorded not very close to the stage, so it's a you're sorta kinda there production, but it's listenable. and the ikon goes on for 45 minutes. it's prime Todd, and the show isn't even listed in a commonly referred to todd rundgren giglisting found at: http://home.comcast.net/mrrandom/tourtoddr.html and could probably stand some EQ by someone who knows how to do it right.
this was not the same setlist as the early 1974 utopia shows, or even as late as October which had Freedom Fighters and some had Freak Parade, but not "the ikon". this version is the longest one I've ever heard of the ikon (even minus the minute or so, if that, of WGGYAW). the sound is not that great but the music is really nice. apparently the masters were also done on 60 minute tapes (not a good idea on this tour, but at least it's close to the full show) if burning to CD, best to start CD 2 with track 6 (the ikon) which will not fit on an 80 min. disc in sequential order on CD one. the track starts with Todd talking about it.

OU comments: this was apparently an early preview of "swing to the right" (from 1982) because it apparently doesn't include anything from 1980's "deface the music" and has a few from "adventures in utopia" this show was recorded and broadcasted in 1981. the 3 abrupt cuts are due to a quick return from a commercial break, each is only missing a couple of seconds. other than that, this is the full broadcast. the cassette recorder used for this was not a very good one. the cassette had only been played a couple of times before digitizing. Todd saw the light. now you can hear Todd seeing the light.

The is from the "Retrorock" Radio Broadcast which aired in the early '80's.
The Radio Show's tag was "putting the present into perspective" so it includes the songs included here plus host Meg Griffin informing us of a little of what TR was up to at the time. Not much actual information, but the songs are fantastic.
Made from the transcript LP on a great turntable > DAT > CD (with digital editing by Sandra Winters to rid the CD of clicks and pops).
This is sourced from a Bubnick CDR, one of the few where sticking a label on it didn't warp the disc enough to ruin it.
